Jordan’s tourism sector loses $1 billion in 2011

AMMAN: Jordan’s tourism sector lost around 700 million  dinars ($1 billion) in potential revenue last year as a result of a “negative” image propagated by foreign media, according to government ministers.

It's been 18 months since the Arab Spring swept through the Middle East and while some nations have emerged with a renewed spirit, others have plunged into daily violence. 

The wave of protests that galvanized many in the region resulted in a sharp drop in tourism to countries at the center of the turmoil. Vital to the economy of nations like Tunisia and Egypt, tourist numbers plummeted by up to one-third at a loss of billions of dollars. 

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals in the Middle East declined by 8.4 percent to 54.8 million in 2011 after growing nearly 15 percent the year before. The numbers would have fallen even further if "safe" destinations like the United Arab Emirates hadn't snatched up the diverted tourists. 

... Tourism, one of Egypt's largest industries, plummeted in 2011 by more than one-third over the previous year.

NUMBER TWO, I'D KILL OBAMA CARE. IT IS SCARING SMALL BUSINESS FROM HIRING. 

NUMBER THREE, I’D PUT AMERICA ON TRACK TO BALANCE OUR BUDGET SO THAT AGAIN PEOPLE KNOW THAT INVESTING IN AMERICA IS GOING TO YIELD A RETURN IN DOLLARS WORTH SOMETHING. WND reports that another UN employee is inciting against Israel with the use of more falsely linked pictures:

UNITED NATIONS – Israel is battling the United Nations over a U.N. employee who tweeted a false claim of child-killing against the Israel Defense Forces.

The Internet posting alleged that the IDF was responsible for the death of a girl in Gaza. It was accompanied by the image of a man carried a gravely injured and bloodied young girl.

Israeli officials say the falsely captioned photo has gone viral and is posing a serious security threat to civilians in the region because it could incite violence. Israeli sources have confirmed they believe the goal of the posting was to create a dangerous situation for their citizens.

The photograph was pulled from a 2006 archive that documented an accident unrelated to the IDF in which the girl was injured.

When the Tweet was sent several months ago, Ron Prosor, Israel’s United Nations ambassador, promptly filed a complaint and asked that action be taken against the U.N. staff member, Kulhood Badawi, an information and media coordinator in the humanitarian affairs office in the U.N.’s Jerusalem complex.

But nothing has been done, apparently.

Prosor said it’s been long enough.

He wrote in an email: “It is outrageous that three months have passed, and Kulhood Badawi is still on the U.N.’s payroll. OCHA (Office of Humanitarian Affairs) expects Israel to provide it with information at the drop of a hat, but finds every excuse to delay action and stall for time when its own employee who is in charge of information has been caught red-handed spreading misinformation.”

He continued, “If the U.N. wants Israel to take assertions of objectivity with any shred of seriousness, it should expedite the investigation and take action to terminate Ms. Badawi.”

Martin Nesirky, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, declined to comment other than to say the investigation still “is under way.”

Israeli diplomatic sources say if the U.N. continues to delay the review, a procedure Prosor publicly has labeled a “whitewash,” Israel could consider acting on its own. One of the options is to expel Badawi from Jerusalem.

The latest developments came after Israel became fed up with trying to obtain a resolution from the office of Valerie Amos, a former cabinet member for Tony Blair and the highest ranking British national in the world body in her position as under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs.

Well of course you can't rely on a Brit, certainly not one who worked for Blair when he was UK's prime minister. Badawi most definitely should be banished from Israel altogether for his obscene framing tactics, and Israel would do well enough to quit the UN.

AUSTRIA'S NORBERT DARABOS IS THEIR EQUIVALENT TO GUNTER GRASS

Benjamin Weinthal writes on the Jerusalem Post about the Austrian defense minister Norbert Darabos, who's just as bad as Germany's Gunter Grass:

My latest straight-news report on critics asserting that Austrian defense minister Norbert Darabos ignores Iran’s determination to build a nuclear weapons device coupled with his attacks on Israel unleashed a spiraling war of words.

The crossfire reminds me of an Austrian governmental version of the Günter Grass scandal. Exactly as Mr. Grass—a lifelong German social democratic activist—found himself just a few months ago, the social democratic party (SPÖ) minister Darabos now finds himself locked in a war of words with his Jewish and non-Jewish critics. And exactly as Iran celebrated Grass's artistic contributions to international affairs, the Islamic world's most dangerous clerical regime has emerged as Mr. Darabos' chief advocate.

Iran has proved to be no fair-weather friend to Mr. Darabos. My Jerusalem Post dispatch “Austrian Defense Minister Should Resign” sparked Iran’s regime-controlled German language outlet (Iran German Radio, IRIB World Service, Das Deutsche Program) to bitterly complain about the “anger of Zionist circles in Europe.” According to IRIB, Dr. Shimon Samuels, from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, “in an interview with the Jerusalem Post intervened in internal Austrian affairs with surprising demands…”

During that said interview, Dr. Samuels told me that Mr. Darabos ought to resign because he endangered Austrian’s foreign policy and engaged in an anti-Semitic reflex by insisting that Israel is the only Mideast country to be blamed for the region’s problems. (Incidentally, when I asked Mr. Darabos’ spokesman Stefan Hirsch to send me examples of other foreign politicians that Mr. Darabos targeted for robust criticism, he declined to answer my email query). Mr. Darabos flatly rejected the accusation that he is “anti-Semitic” and proudly declared: “I am an anti-fascist par excellence.”

So what prompted Tehran’s defense of Mr. Darabos in its state-financed media outlets?

Last weekend, Mr. Darabos told the Austrian daily Die Presse’s Christian Ultsch in an eye-popping interview that Israel’s “threats” were “unnecessary” because “Iran is not ready to build the bomb.” In the same interview, Mr. Darabos termed Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman “unbearable” and accused Israel of using the danger of an Iranian nuclear program – and the Palestinian issue – to deflect attention from Israeli domestic and social problems.

In that case, Darabos should be ashamed of himself for lying, but clearly, he's not. Read the rest of the entry for more, but for now, I think we've just found another clue to why Austria is not a place where any sane person wants to be right now.

The largest volcanoes on our planet may take as little as a few hundred years to form and erupt. These "supervolcanoes" were thought to exist for as much as 200,000 years before releasing their vast underground pools of molten rock. Researchers reporting in Plos One have sampled the rock at the supervolcano site of Long Valley in California. Their findings suggest that the magma pool beneath it erupted within as little as hundreds of years of forming. That eruption is estimated to have happened about 760,000 years ago, and would have covered half of North America in its ash. 

Such super-eruptions can release thousands of cubic kilometres of debris - hundreds of times larger than any eruption seen in the history of humanity. Eruptions on this scale could release enough ash to influence the global weather for years, and one theory holds that the Lake Toba eruption in Indonesia about 70,000 years ago had long-term effects that nearly wiped out humans altogether.

For generations, coal has been king in this Appalachian town. It provided heat, light and jobs for the hundreds of people who worked in the nearby coal mines and the smoke-coughing Big Sandy power plant that burned their black bounty.

But now, coal is in a corner. Across the United States, the industry is under siege, threatened by new regulations from Washington, environmentalists fortified by money from Michael R. Bloomberg, the billionaire mayor of New York City, and natural gas companies intent on capturing much of the nation’s energy market. 

So when the operator of the Big Sandy plant announced last year that it would be switching from coal to cleaner, cheaper natural gas, people here took it as the worst betrayal imaginable. 

“Have you lost your mind?” State Representative Rocky Adkins, a Democrat and one of Kentucky’s most powerful politicians, thundered at Michael G. Morris, the chairman of the plant’s operator, American Electric Power, during an encounter last summer. “You cannot wave the white flag and let the environmentalists and regulators declare victory here in the heart of coal country.” 

Coal and electric utilities, long allied, are beginning to split. More than 100 of the 500 or so coal-burning power plants in the United States are expected to be shut down in the next few years. While coal still provides about a third of the nation’s power, just four years ago it was providing nearly half. 

The decline is largely because new pollution rules have made coal plants more costly, while a surge in production of natural gas through the process of hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, has sent gas prices plummeting. Together, the economics of coal have been transformed after a century of dominance in Washington, state capitals and the board rooms of electric utilities.

In the bitter debate that is raging in Turkey and pitting the Kemalist elites that long governed the country against the new Anatolian middle class represented by the piously conservative government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, many actors, directors and critics believe the former, and the mood backstage is desperate. 

Artists fear that the lights will go down for good if the government goes through with a proposed overhaul of state theaters.
“The government is moving to shut down the theater,” Ustun Akmen, president of the Turkish Theater Critics’ Association, said in an interview in Istanbul last week. “They want to destroy the arts. After the theater, it will be the opera and ballet, and then they will move on to impede education in the arts at the universities. Frankly, I am afraid.”

The Culture Ministry, while declining to disclose details of the overhaul project it is drawing up together with the prime minister’s office, said this week that artists had nothing to fear from it. The changes, slated to be submitted to cabinet later this month, would reflect a modern approach to state patronage of the arts in line with practice in other countries, a ministry spokesman quoted Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay as saying. 

But the level of antagonism and distrust between the clashing factions of Turkey’s rapidly changing society is such that artists are not easily reassured, especially given how the overhaul initiative began.

But the leaders are signaling that the latest round of stimulus spending will fall far short of the four trillion renminbi, or $585 billion at the time, that the government poured into the economy in 2008 and 2009. That spurred a torrent of bank lending, part of it for dubious projects that many experts say will wind up bankrupt in coming years.

The government has made no formal announcement of a stimulus program, and an article in Wednesday’s People’s Daily, the Communist Party’s leading newspaper, quoted leading Chinese economists as suggesting that any efforts to bolster growth are likely to be measured. Markets fell on Wednesday after the article and other news from Beijing indicated that China’s planners remained cautious about engaging in a huge additional stimulus program.

India’s currency, the rupee, is falling; investment is down; inflation is rising; and deficits are eating away at government coffers. Laborers unloading wood from a truck in Kolkata this month. India may be unable to help lead the world out of recession. 

While short-term growth has slowed but not ground to a halt, India’s problems have dampened hopes that it, along with China and other non-Western economies, might help revive the global economy, as happened after the 2008 financial crisis. Instead, India is now facing a political reckoning, as the country’s elected leaders must address difficult, politically unpopular decisions — or risk even deeper problems.... the slowdown has punctured the once bubbly mood in the business and political classes and brought sharp criticism of the government. Indian business leaders, foreign investors and analysts say India’s strengths are being undermined by growing political dysfunction: the populist tendencies of Indian politicians, a lack of action by top leaders and allegations of corruption that have undermined the authority of policy makers.

India is desperate for investment in mining, roads, ports, urban housing and other areas, but Indian businesses and foreign investors are starting to shy away. Indian corporations, unable to obtain governmental licenses or permissions for projects, are investing overseas instead. Foreigners are also pulling back; their investment in Indian stocks and bonds totaled only $16 billion in the last fiscal year, compared with $30 billion the year before. The trend accelerated in recent months after the Finance Ministry, trying to stem a rising budget deficit, proposed a raft of new taxes on foreign institutions doing business in India.

Kaushik Basu, the government’s chief economic adviser, acknowledged that the government had made mistakes and had missed opportunities to better position India as the global economic landscape shifts. Yet he said that the rising pessimism was unwarranted and that India was still growing, still had high investment and savings rates, and should take advantage of the depreciation of the rupee to push exports. He said India’s problems were no worse than those in other emerging economies. “It is a difficult stage,” Mr. Basu said in an interview. “But I do remain very, very optimistic. Six months and we will pull up.”

IF KOFI ANNAN REALLY ABHORS ASSAD'S MASSACRES, WHY IS HE TRAVELING TO MEET WITH HIM?

One of Syria's latest mowdowns of people around the country has cost 108 lives. Assad's demonic slaughters has even led to condemnation from Russia. But just how far does that condemnation go? Specifically, why is former UN chief Kofi Annan going to Syria to meet with Assad to have an argument about the horrors the Syrian despot's been stooping to?

United Nations special envoy Kofi Annan arrived on Monday in Damascus to meet with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on the heels of a weekend massacre that left more than 100 people--including what appeared to be "rows of bloody children"--dead.

The U.N. said at least 108 people were killed on Friday in the town of Houla--49 of them children. The Syrian government blamed rebel gunmen for the attacks, dismissing the suspicions of international watchdog groups and others that pro-regime forces were involved.

On Sunday, the U.N. Security Council condemned the killings "in the strongest possible terms" and called for an independent investigation.

"I have come to Syria at a critical moment in this crisis," Annan said in a statement upon his arrival. "I am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houla two days ago, which took so many innocent lives, children, women and men. This was an appalling crime, and the [U.N.] Security Council has rightly condemned it."

Annan said those "must be held accountable."

"I understand that the government is also investigating," he said.

Does he really buy that? Assad's gang is responsible, and he's conducting and allowing these massacres, so how pathetic of Annan to take what they say at face value.

Assad has come under intense scrutiny from world leaders in the wake of amateur video, released over the weekend, that showed "a room crammed with the mangled and bloody bodies of children--some with their skulls torn open," CNN said. According to the Associated Press, another video later video "showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave."

"I intend to have serious and frank discussions with President Bashar Al-Assad," Annan said. "Our goal is to stop this suffering."

More than 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in early 2011, according to U.N. estimates.

He added: "It must end and it must end now. I urge the government to take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully, and for everyone involved to help create the right context for a credible political process. And this message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

According to the Associated Press, Syrian troops killed 24 people early Monday in a shelling in Hama.

What Assad's forces did was abominable. But Annan is tragically and predictably naive to think that merely talking to Assad will convince the tyrant to cease the jihad he's conducting. His talk of a "process" is just classic defeatism at its worst. The only way to stop the slaughter is to depose of Assad once and for all, and until Islamofascism is shed in Syria, it'll need an outside type of government to oversee the country's rebuilding. But Annan and the UN are not the ones to work on it, due to their naive approach and incompetence.

Today is the 70th anniversary of the Farhud, a "violent dispossession" or pogrom against Iraq's Jews which took place on June 1, 1941.

Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and one of the initial members of the Muslim Brotherhood, became a Nazi agent after meeting Adolf Eichmann, an architect of the Holocaust, in 1937. 

With Nazi funds al-Husseini organized the Arab Revolt of 1936-39, which led to the British stopping Jewish immigration to modern day Israel. This facilitated the "Final Solution" by closing off the avenue of refuge. In 1941, the mufti orchestrated a short-lived, Nazi-backed generals' coup in Iraq. The coup was followed by the Farhud, a pogrom against Baghdad's Jews.

The Mufti obtained Hitler's assurance in November 1941 that after dealing with the Jews of Europe, Hitler would treat the Jews of the Middle East similarly.

SALAFIST POLICEMAN IN GERMANY SUSPENDED FOR CONNECTIONS TO RADICALS

The German authorities have done the right thing and put an inciter's career on hold:

BERLIN – Authorities in the west German city of Duisburg suspended an officer who is a member of a growing radical movement of Islamists in the Federal Republic because he misused his access to confidential domestic intelligence information in connection with the observation of the Salafi group.

“It is a very, very serious case,” said a spokesman for the Interior Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia, according to a report last week in the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ).

The suspended officer is named Ali K. German media frequently do not release the last names of suspects. The WAZ reported that Ali K’s police functions could have been compromised because he was supposed to monitor Salafists. Ali K. had contacts to radical Islamic preachers who advocate hate, the newspaper said.

The radical group of German Salafists is considered as rejecting the democratic structure of the Federal Republic and propagating violence against non-Muslims, specifically women, gays, and Jews.

The authorities first discovered the 31-year-old Ali K.’s pro-Salafist activity last month when he registered for a permit allowing an information booth to give out Salafist literature in a public place. According to the WAZ, Essen police president Stephania Fischer-Weinsziehr believes he will be “dismissed from the civil service.”

They'd be strongly advised to move ahead with his dismissal at once. This is certainly taking a lot more responsibility than the authorities in Britain are.

WORTH CONSIDERATION

Via Breitbart, here's news of a pre-teen who's raising money for a special monument in Normandy for WW2 veterans.

Besides being a very inspiring story, I'd say it's worth considering that Americans who really do care about Europe's fate - what with the Islamization of the continent - might want to something special in another way for Europe as well: back in WW2, they fought the nazi machine in combat. In today's environment, why not help Europeans by campaigning for drafting laws that can help defend their continent against Islamofascism, by forming special delegations that can travel to Europe and give speeches and courses and most importantly of all, speak before parliaments?

I'd say it's an idea that needs to be very strongly considered since this is something that affects America's future as well. After all, to defend against evil ideologies needs more than to be fought in combat, it needs to be fought on the legal front as well. It's something that even families of Islamic terror victims could help work on.

So I do hope this is an idea that'll be taken up as soon as possible.

The Anti-Defamation League on Friday welcomed a decision by the Cannes Film Market to drop from the screening lineup a film from controversial French comic Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala, whom the group called anti-semitic.

The film, entitled The Anti-Semite or Yahod Setiz, was produced by the Iranian Documentary and Experimental Film Center. The ADL said it "reportedly pokes fun at the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, where an estimated 1.5 million Jews perished during the Holocaust, and features Dieudonne as a violent and alcoholic character dressed as a Nazi officer for a fancy dress party...."

"Our general conditions ban the presence of all films threatening public order or religious convictions, as well as pornographic films or those inciting violence," Jerome Paillard, the market's executive director, told the AFP.

And that leads us to the bad news: the man telling this clearly has no distinction between criticism of religion and attacks on race. If criticism of religion is not allowed, then by that logic, neither is criticism of ideologies like what M'Bala adheres to. How does Paillard explain that?

Only a quarter of the 300 to 400 sex shops that once existed in Athens have survived the crisis,

Greece's once-thriving sex industry has become the latest victim of the country's debt crisis as Greeks spend less on erotic toys, pornography and titillating underwear.....The austerity measures Greece adopted as part of the country's international bailout deal have led to record unemployment, while wage cuts and tax hikes have throttled consumer spending. 

The sex industry is feeling the hit. ... In the 1980s, sex films were usually shot on remote, sandy beaches on some of the country's many islands and dubbed into English for export. 

But much of that scene has disappeared after local producers were undercut by free internet pornography and movies from Eastern European countries. "Five out of the seven porn stars in Greece are Hungarian," Chrysospathis said....  a return to the drachma currency - feared by many - would deal the industry a further setback. Almost all sex toys sold in Greece are imported from countries such as Germany or Poland, and a devalued drachma would make them unaffordable. 

"A vibrator that now costs 20 euros would then cost 50,"
