The downside of waterboarding Nancy Pelosi

Waterboarding -- as a field interrogation technique -- has been used by American troops since the Spanish-American War.

According to National Public Radio, U.S. troops in the Philippines employed it over a period of decades.

Contrary to President Obama's assertions, the British used it extensively.

The U.S. also used enhanced interrogation in Vietnam.


As part of their training, American special forces and naval aviators are waterboarded as a matter of course during SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) school.


As ABC reports, Nancy Pelosi and dozens of other members and staffers of Congress were briefed repeatedly on the use of waterboarding on three high-value suspects shortly after the 9/11 attacks.


At that time, of course, there were widespread fears of biological, chemical and/or nuclear attacks on American cities among various leaders in government.


Waterboarding revealed much, as was admitted by four current and former heads of national intelligence agencies.


Put simply, the Democrat members of Congress briefed on this topic, who claim now to object to the practice, are liars -- plain and simple. They have politicized, in every way possible, the defense of this country.

My wife says we should waterboard Pelosi to get to the bottom of this.

There's a good reason for not waterboarding Pelosi, however. Any one of a number of surgical 'enhancements' might rupture, which could causing severe emotional distress for the interrogators.

Some Carter critics called the latest reports typical of the ex-president.

POWER LINE: About those videos the CIA destroyed, Part Two

Jose Rodriguez, Jr. is the CIA official who is said to have ordered the destruction of the video tapes that memorialized the interrogation of two leading al Qaeda terrorists. At the time, Rodriguez was the CIA’s Director of Clandestine Operations.

That title reminds us that much of what the CIA does is supposed to be clandestine.

In essence, the CIA was conceived as an organization that would do secret things to obtain information, and then analyze that information.

It was always understood that some of the secret things would be unsavory.

It was never understood that the CIA would keep recordings of these actions just in case a court, a congressional committee, or a newspaper might want to take a look. The idea was to win the Cold War, not to create an album.

The image of the Cold War CIA is captured, albeit over-dramatically, in the old Mission Impossible show, when the clandestine operative is informed that, if he or any member of his team is caught or captured, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of their actions.

Five seconds later, the tape self-destructs.

Jose Rodriguez may be wondering where that manufacturer of self-destructing tape was when he needed him.

Times have changed, to be sure.

Nowadays the CIA’s main functions seem to be leaking to the press and producing guesses (called assessments), hoping against hope that a few of them will prove to be correct.

Rodriguez did the right thing: he protected the USA from the possibility that these tapes would fall into enemy hands - LIKE THE NYTIMES! - and be used for propaganda by the enemy - (as they did with the Abu Ghraib images).

But this episodes proves one thing more: we have a schizophrenic CIA:

'POLITICS': "This is politics disguised as intelligence," said John Bolton, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, in an article appearing in this week's Der Spiegel magazine.

The former ambassador to the U.N. says the the latest intelligence estimate is meant not to inform but to influence policy.

U.S. intelligence services attempted to influence political policy by releasing their assessment that concludes Iran halted its nuclear arms program in 2003, said John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Der Spiegel magazine quoted Bolton on Saturday as alleging that the aim of the National Intelligence Estimate, which contradicts his and President Bush's position, was not to provide the latest intelligence on Iran.

"This is politics disguised as intelligence," Bolton was quoted as saying in an article appearing in this week's edition.

Bolton described the report, released Monday, as a "quasi-putsch" by the intelligence agencies, Der Spiegel said.

First, the United States must be successful in the fight against worldwide Islamic extremism. We have seen this ruthless enemy firsthand, and its global ambitions are undeniable. This struggle, the Long War, will probably take decades to prosecute. Failure is not an option.

Second, whether or not we like it, Iraq is central to that fight. We cannot walk away from our strategic interests in the region. Iraq cannot become a staging ground for Islamic extremism or be dominated by other powers in the region, such as Iran and Syria. A premature or precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, without the requisite stability and security, is likely to cause the violence there -- which has decreased substantially but is still present -- to cascade into an even larger humanitarian crisis.

Third, the counterinsurgency campaign led by Gen. David Petraeus is the correct approach in Iraq. It is showing promise of success and, if continued, will provide the Iraqi government the opportunities it desperately needs to stabilize its country.

There are two stories here: 1) A formerly anti-war general flips on supporting the war, and now believes Petraeus has the right strategy; and 2) Batiste has left VoteVets.org, and the antiwar movement, and joined up with the pro-troop, pro-surge, pro-victory Vets for Freedom.

The antiwar movement has lost one of its most powerful voices today, and it will be interesting to see whether they turn on one of their own, or come around to the view, supported by a preponderance of evidence, that the surge is working.

Now it turns out that her husband is a State Department bureaucrat. As reported by the newspaper of record, the New York Post - (HAT TIP JIHAD WATCH):

FBI fraudster Nada Nadim Prouty not only used a sham marriage to get jobs with access to secret terrorist intelligence - her current husband is a State Department employee who has held sensitive posts in Middle Eastern embassies, The Post has learned.

Her third hubby, Gordon Prouty, 40, now works for the State Department in Washington, a spokesman confirmed Friday night. He had been stationed at American embassies in Egypt and Pakistan.

A Justice Department spokesman, Dean Boyd, refused to comment on Gordon Prouty's job, or say whether he was under investigation along with his criminal wife. [Emphasis added.]

There appears to be no publicly available picture of Gordon Prouty at this time. Perhaps someone will post his mug shot soon, but that is doubtful.

Where is Senator Joe McCarthy, now that we really need him -- again!

DEMS IN CONGRESS ATTACK ANOTHER AMERICAN ALLY: ETHIOPIA

The Democrats in Congress continue to seek new fronts in which to aid America's enemies. Having failed to defeat America in Iraq, and after their second-place Presidential aspirant threatened to bomb American ally Pakistan, the Dems are now turning against Ethiopia, a critical ally on the front lines of the jihad in the strategically critical Horn of Africa.

As described in an op-ed by two former chiefs-of-mission at the American Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the New Duranty Times:

Sadly, Congress is poised to fuel the march toward war by passing a bill that threatens to cut off technical assistance to Ethiopia, one of our closest allies, if it does not, among other things, release political prisoners, ensure that the judiciary operates independently and permit the news media to operate freely. Ethiopia has already freed opposition leaders, reformed parliamentary rules to give opposition parties greater legislative responsibility and approved a new media law that meets international standards. By singling out Ethiopia for public embarrassment, the bill puts Congress unwittingly on the side of Islamic jihadists and insurgents.

Well said, as far as it goes. But after we have seen the Democrats repeatedly attempt to torpedo the war against the jihadi terrorists in Iraq by attempting time and again to cut off funding to our frontline troops, and repeatedly attempt to defeat the counter-terrorism measures the Bush administration has employed in the United States, and repeatedly attempt to undermine the administration diplomatically by privately treating with our enemies in Syria and Iran, and repeatedly act to snub and humiliate American allies as they did with Colombia and Turkey, you have to wonder just why anyone would think they are "unwittingly on the side of Islamic jihadists and insurgents."

I think the Democrats know what they are doing. They are trying to defeat President Bush every which way but loose, and in the blind madness of their partisanship and Bush-hatred, they don't realize that they are working to defeat America. And they know very well that they are doing everything they can to establish a socialist nanny-state in America and carry out Gramsci's program of undermining the social and cultural foundations of our republican democracy.

You and I are on the front lines of this momentous cultural struggle. The lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world depend on our ability to defeat the left in America. If America falls to the left, there will be nothing to hold back the tide of tyranny. I mean this with the utmost seriousness. There is no rear echelon in the war against jihadi terror. NEW DURANTY TIMES LAUDS COMMIE ATOM SPY; Putin admits Russia couldn't have made the bomb on its own

In a remarkable, and remarkably disgusting front-page hagiogram, the New Duranty Times celebrated on November 12th, the day the Federal government observed as Veterans' Day, the life an career of a Jewish-American communist, George Koval, who was posthumously honored by Vladimir Putin as a Hero of the Russian Federation.

There are a number of interesting items in the Times story, but let's highlight the most important right away:

First of all, by awarding this signal honor to an atomic spy who "penetrated the Manhattan Project to build the atom bomb," Putin is acknowledging that the Soviet Union would not have been able to come up with the bomb on its own, but was only able to do so by piggy-backing on the work done by American & European-refugee scientists in the United States. This fact underscores the significance of the Soviet espionage operation in America, and the damage done by high-ranking traitors such as Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White.

Second, the tone of the article is completely adulatory, and the Times seems to admire and approve the criminal actions by which George Koval enabled the Soviet Empire to impose and maintain its hegemony over 300 million victims by nuclear blackmail against the West. Even at this late date, the Times continues the work of Walter Duranty in aiding and abetting Stalinism and its successors.

Koval was born in 1913 and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. His parents believed in the Soviet lie, and emigrated to the Siberian Jewish "homeland" of Birobidjan in 1932.

By 1934, Dr. Koval was in Moscow, excelling in difficult studies at the Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology. Upon graduating with honors, he was recruited and trained by the G.R.U. and was sent back to the United States for nearly a decade of scientific espionage, from roughly 1940 to 1948.

How he communicated with his controllers is unknown, as is what specifically he gave the Soviets in terms of atomic secrets. However, it is clear that Moscow mastered the atom very quickly compared with all subsequent nuclear powers.

In the United States under a false name, Dr. Koval initially gathered information about new toxins that might find use in chemical arms. Then his G.R.U. controllers took a gamble and had him work under his own name. Dr. Koval was drafted into the Army, and by chance found himself moving toward the bomb project, then in its infancy.

The Army judged him smart and by 1943 sent him for special wartime training at City College in Manhattan. Considered a Harvard for the poor, it was famous for brilliant students, Communists and, after the war, Julius Rosenberg, who was executed for conspiring to steal atomic secrets for the Soviets.

But Dr. Koval steered clear of all debate on socialism and Russia, Dr. Bloom said. “He discussed no politics that I can recall. Never. He never talked about the Soviet Union, never ever, not a word.”

CHURCHILL: ALL EUROPE WILL SUFFER FROM YALTA

In a review in the London Times Online of the memoirs of Sir Winston Churchill's bodyguard, Brian Moynahan reveals a chilling insight that Walter Thompson recorded:

He saw Churchill at his lowest points, a frustrated "kicker of wastepaper baskets" during his wilderness years in the 1930s, weeping over the concessions Roosevelt made to Stalin at Yalta in 1945. "Why, Thompson, did they allow the president, almost dying on his feet, to be there?" he asked. "All Europe will suffer from the decisions made at Yalta."

Had Churchill only known that the more relevant question should have been:

Why did the American State Department allow a Soviet spy to serve as President Roosevelt's foreign policy adviser at Yalta?

That's a question that still deserves an answer.

In my original post, I didn't spell out exactly why I thought that Walter Thompson's recollection of Churchill's despair after Yalta is so important. Here's why:

1)Churchill's reaction to the disaster of Yalta was immediate. He knew right at that time what a disaster it was.

2)Churchill knew that it didn't have to be that way. Despite what Soviet spy Alger Hiss later had to say about it, giving the Soviets hegemony over Eastern Europe was not a done deal before Yalta.

3) Churchill knew that it was up to the Americans to stand up to Stalin, and when FDR didn't do it, he knew that Western Europe wouldn't be in any position to stop the communist juggernaut.

4) Churchill mistakenly attributed FDR's surrender to Stalin to FDR's debilitated condition. Actually, as we know now from the Venona transcripts and information from KGB files, the State Department's top man in Yalta, Alger Hiss, was a committed communist and a conscious agent of the Comintern and Soviet intelligence. The State Department's interpretation of the situation undoubtedly played a major role in influencing FDR's decisions. And we now know that communicating the State Department's position to FDR was in the hands of a traitor.

Leftists call Ahmadinejad a "conservative" as if he was closer to Bush than Hillary, but this is false.

Leftists feel that because Bush is religious and Ahmadinejad is religious they are for all intents and purposes the same, but this is false - A BLATANT LOGICAL FALLACY.

Leftists feel this is so because they feel that conservatives are anti-libertarian because we are:

• pro-life;

• see a difference between secularism and atheism;

• and accept that during wartime we might have to reduce our liberty a little in order to defeat the enemy.

NONE OF THESE CORE CONSERVATIVE POSITIONS IS ANTI-LIBERTARIAN.

ON THESE CORE/DEFINING ISSUES, THE LEFT FEELS THAT:

• ... a mother should have the liberty to kill her yet-to-be born baby.
• ... government must be atheistic because God has no place in the public square.
• ... only wars which are unanimously agreed to at the UN are moral and legal.

On all this the Left is wrong wrong wrong. One of the core reasons the Left wrongly lumps conservative religious people with the jihadists is that the Left is basically RELIGIOPHOBIC.

If the Left wants to fear something they should look in the mirror; FACT:

• Socialism killed more people in the 20th Century than religion did in the preceding twenty centuries.

BOTTOM-LINE: The Left is soft on jihadism and favors appeasing it - except when it's outright allied to it. EITHER WAY, THE LEFT IS THE ENEMY'S FIFTH COLUMN.

Which is why I have argued for a long long time: To defeat the jihadist enemy abroad we must defeat the Leftist enemy at home.
