It is growing increasingly clear that the Marxist Nutroot left is becoming more and more the dominant force in the Democrat party. The increasing heat from the MoveOn.org Left to actually try and impeach Bush and Cheney is obviously a sign that the party's leadership is losing control of this runaway train. Is the self-destructiveness of the Democrats a positive development politically for Republicans? Sure it is.

Yet I have to go on record here as not agreeing with Michelle Malkin's apparent inference in the above linked post that we should hope for impeachment proceedings to gain momentum, whether it would help Republicans or not.

To distract a President with trumped up hysterical charges, as he conducts a War and tries to protect our citizens from further horrific attacks--a move which would have no chance whatsoever of succeeding in the Senate--would be perilous both for the country's security and for the electorate's trust in our system of Government...

But, of course, for the Marxists on the Democrat Left, this is exactly why they want it to happen...).

I nevertheless do acknowledge her point that if the Dems were to make such a patently partisan and hysterical move as to attempt to impeach this President, it would definitely help Republicans in next year's elections; after all this President:

1. Is merely following a long-standing tradition in asserting Executive Privalege for his personal aides;
   
2. Is following many other Presidents' precedent of conducting surveillance of the enemy when the nation he was sworn to protect was at War and/or in danger of attack;
   
3. Is a President whose wartime actions do not hold a candle to the extra-constitutional wartime actions of Democrat hero FDR during WWII and Lincoln during the Civil War; and
   
4. Would easily have enough support to prevent the 2/3 majority needed to impeach.
   

Sure it might help Republicans if the Democrat leadership is imbecilic enough to push this forward; but would Impeachment now be good for the country? I say no: the means of getting that favorable political outcome are too fraught with risk. The Long War we are in is the most important conflict in our lifetimes; the heightened global tensions we face in places like Iran, Syria, Korea, are nearing critical mass; the precarious nature of the economy right now--all these are far too critical to the future of the country (and indeed, the World) to distract our Commander in Chief for such an outrageous display of blind partisanship.

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows how I feel when Democrats have regularly put their party's fortunes ahead of our country's. The Financial Surveillance leaks, the Plame put-up job, Senators like Jay Rockefeller trying to sell their country's security for purely partisan political gain--these are reprehensible, even treasonous actions.

Yes, I understand the Republican political maneuver last week, when they changed their votes to keep the Kucinich resolution alive, simply to embarrass the foolish Democrats who proposed it in the first place. I understand their intent was not to actually move towards impeachment. But with the nutroots pulling the strings to the extent that they are, even that maneuver was risky.

It is difficult for me to imagine a scenario where it would be appropriate to try and impeach an American President in the middle of a War--unpopular or not. And it should not be cavalierly voted upon, by either party. Yes, if the Democrats are dumb enough to push this forward, it could well improve Republicans' chances next year.

But I have never argued here that putting the country at risk for purely partisan political gain is appropriate, and I am not going to start now.

Personally I think the nutroots have already begun to dig a deep enough hole for themselves that they might not come out of it unscathed. And impeachment proceedings at this moment in history is a really atrocious idea--not only for any sensible Democrats left out there in the ether who want to win next year, but also for the country as a whole. It should not be encouraged by any responsible citizen.

U.S. TECHNICIANS TO BEGIN DISABLING N. KOREAN NUKE REACTOR BEGINNING MONDAY

George Bush has accomplished what Bill Clinton could not (and neither the BBC, nor CNN give him credit for it):

Sung Kim is leading the team of experts in Pyongyang. A team of US technicians is due to begin disabling North Korea's nuclear complex on Monday with Pyongyang's permission, a top US envoy has said.

The technicians have left Pyongyang and are due to arrive at the main nuclear site, Yongbyon, on Sunday, according to Christopher Hill.

Pyongyang agreed to disabling in return for aid and security guarantees.

It shut down its reactor at Yongbyon in July and is to give details of its programme by the end of the year.

Speaking in Tokyo, Mr Hill said the US experts would start disabling the reactor, North Korea's only functioning one, and two other facilities on Monday.

"It's a very big day because it's the first time it [North Korea] is actually going to start dismantling its nuclear programme," he added.

In his own remarks, the Dalai Lama praised Bush for his "firm stand on religious freedom and democracy."

Hey, anti-war crowd, I got a question for you: WAS IRAQ ALL ABOUT OIL - OR ISRAEL?

I think the war in Iraq is all about living in a post-9/11 world, and confronting this era's new dangers.

The "anti-war" crowd doesn't see it that way.

They say we went to war for the oil.

And they say we went to war for Israel.

And they say we should not go to war for either.

It seems to me that it there's a lot wrong with these anti-war arguments.

First, both arguments cannot be true: we cannot have gone to war for Israel AND for oil.

This is ridiculous on its face - though people who believe this don't seem to see the contradiction. They seem comfortable saying that Bush is simultaneously in Israel's back-pocket, Saudi Arabia's back-pocket, and "Big Oil's" back-pocket - even though these three groups have highly differentiated and even conflicting interests.

Another thing that's nutty about this: Even Mearsheimer and Walt admit in their book that Israel lobbied Bush NOT to go to war against Saddam.

But the real kicker is this: No US troops have ever been directly deployed to defend Israel, while US troops have been deployed to defend Muslims MANY times: in Kosovo, in the No Fly Zones, in the Gulf War, and so on. The TRUTH is that US troops have been DIRECTLY used to save Muslims and Muslim lands while US troops have never EVER been used to defend Israel. The idea that US foreign policy is "dictated" by Israel or "the Israel Lobby" is simply not supported by history.

The "blood for oil" argument is also ridiculous: If we wanted Iraq's oil all we had to do was end sanctions. Very US Big Oil company could have WALTZED into Iraq and made any deal they wanted. Bush could have easily done this. If ALL Bush wanted was access to Iraqi oil, then he could have blamed the failed sanctions on Clinton and decided tom "engage" Saddam with trade - called "IRAQI DETENTE."

Certainly the Persian Gulf is strategically important because of its oil - THAT'S WHY WE HAD TO EXPEL SADDAM FROM KUWAIT IN THE GULF WAR - a just war, which MOST Democrat US Senators VOTED AGAINST! (This is one reason so many voted FOR the 2002 Saddam War Resolution: the didn't want to make the same mistake they made in 1991!) Persian Gulf oil has been considered a VITAL US interest and a vital interest to the Free World since 1980 - when President Jimmy Carter said - in his final SOTU that the USA would defend the Gulf and use military force of necessary.

So, oil was a factor. We can not ever let the region fall under the hegemony of al Qaeda or Iran.
And Israel was a factor. Saddam was supporting jihado-terror against Israel.

Probably both contributed to the decision, but neither was decisive.

What was decisive was the fact that the UNSCR's were the de facto armistice of the Gulf War and it was proven beyond ANY REASONABLE DOUBT - and accepted by David Kay and Blix - that Iraq was in violation of several of the UNSCR's. Saddam filed a FALSE declaration, and hampered the inspectors, and was in violation of several UNSCR's. UNSCR #1441 was an ultimatum; we told Saddam: "This is your last chance to obey - or else!"Saddam flunked and paid the consequences. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

If the antiwar crowd would accept that - and stop bellyaching about the war, then not onl;y would we sending a less ambiguous message to al Qaeda and Iran vis a vis their meddling in Iraq, we would ALSO be sending a much less AMBIGUOUS signal to Iran regarding their nuclear programs. As it stands now - because of the anti-war belly-aching - Iran thinks they can get away with violation the IAEA and the UNSC.

And that just makes war MORE likely.

When "or else" means nothing, diplomacy will always fail.

The stronger and more united we are, the LESS likely our foes will do things we must counter with force.

Unity and Resolve are important parts of Deterrence.

The anti-war crowd's irrational attacks on our motives, and their awfulization of the campaign only aids the enemy and makes another war more likely.

It's time for the anti-war crowd to STFU.

Are they not ready because of years of oppression or centuries of Islam?

Both; they are not ready and you can't force people to be democratic.

Then why should the west accept any Muslims from historically Muslim nations which have been historically oppressed and whose citizens can't seem to accept self-rule? Won't accepting hundreds of thousands of people whose religion and experiences are antithetical to democracy weaken our democracy?

Er um...

And why were we successful in Japan and South Korea - since these nations had no democracy before American occupation either? And why were we right to force the south to extend civil rights to blacks?

Er... um...

And don't we have a moral responsibility to help out all our brothers and sisters achieve their innate human rights and live free from oppression of all types, everywhere - isn't this what FDR said in the Four Freedoms speech and JFK in his inaugural speech? And don't we have a greater responsibility for Iraq and Iraqis - having invaded and occupied Iraq?

Yes... sure... but... er... um... we went to war for Israel and oil! All this democracy talk is an after thought!

Er um, no - Bush talked of its importance in his UN speech to the General Assembly in September 2002 - before the Congress voted to give him authority to go to was against Saddam. And, Israel warned us and said stopping Iran was the key to stopping worldwide jihadoterror. And we could have bought all the oil we wanted from Saddam; there was no need to occupy Iraq to get the oil. We could have simply removed the sanctions and allowed US BIG OIL COMPANIES to get all the contracts they could.

Never mind.

If Iran and Syria are influencing events inside of Iraq, and aiding the Iraqi elements which Iraq want Iraq to be less democratic and more extremist, then why shouldn't we influence Iraq and support the Iraqi elements which want to liberalize and have a democracy?

Because we don't belong in the region; Iran and Syria are in the region.

But we can't become isolationist, can we?

No, but we should only get involved internationally if the UN has approved it.

(Forget for a moment the sovereignty issue), and consider this fact: the UN has long approved our occupation and just recently increased its presence there - for the first time since their HQ in Baghdad was attacked. Now that we have their explicit approval, are you saying we should ignore it and the wishes of the democratically elected government of Iraq?

Never mind. Iraqis didn't attack us on 9/11; Saudis did, and their al Qaeda bosses are still in Afghanistan. Which is where we should be concentrating our forces.

Zarqawi and other al Qaeda leaders fled from Afghanistan and went to Iraq after we deposed the Taliban. And we and NATO ARE fighting the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, and we are killing hundreds of them every week - with the help of the Pakistanis. If al Qaeda wants to fight us in Iraq - and that's where our most of our troops are (along with an indigenous population increasingly alienated if not hateful of al Qaeda), then why should we go somewhere/anywhere else?

Er um... I dunno. 'Cause Bush stole the 2000 election in Florida, and the 2004 election in Ohio, and he and his rich-and-getting richer (as the poor are getting poorer) tax-cutting deficit-exploding closeted-gay fascist cronies are destroying the planet with their CO2!

And Kansas has not asked for any reinforcements or extra equipment from neighboring states.... Funny thing about these folks... they think they KNOW MORE than me. They only read the NYTIMES, and only watch CNN (or MSNBC), and they never watch, listen to, or read a speech by their president. AND YET... they think they know more than me. ME, who reads the NYTIMES AND the NYSUN, (and NRO etc.), and who watches CNN and FOX and the BBC, and who reads the president's speeches.

These leftists are the same folks who BELIEVE in AGW and evolution EVEN THOUGH THEY CAN EXPLAIN NEITHER!
