POLITICAL LEGERDEMAIN: OBAMA - ACCEPTING THE NOMINATION AND EVADING THE ISSUES

Obie offered several times in his acceptance speech to debate McCain. But tellingly, he spent much more time evading the issues and staking out non-debatable positions.

Like this:
We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country.
This is political misdirection. He is hiding the substantive differences between him and McCain, in order to stifle debate, and make the election a media sideshow and personality contest, rather than a contest of ideas.

Honestly, whether we agree or disagree on reducing unwanted pregnancies in the country is completely irrelevant to the issue of abortion. And the differences there are stark: Senator McCain told Pastor Rick Warren that human rights begin at the moment of conception, while Senator Obama hemmed and hawed his way through an obfuscatory non-answer.

Obama had a whole paragraph of this political trickery in his speech last night. Example after example. Here's the next one:
The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.
Another substitution of a falsehood for the real differences between Obama and McCain. First of all, the realities of gun ownership are no different for anyone, no matter where you live. And gun laws that deprive law-abiding citizens of their God-given, Constitutionally-recognized and protected rights do nothing to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. And criminals don't use AK-47s, either. So the areas of agreement that Obama seeks are meaningless, and conceal his intent to disarm law-abiding Americans.

Next:
I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination.
Another misdirection. Whether or not gays and lesbians can visit whomever they want in the hospital, and whether they face discrimination, has nothing whatsoever to do with the sanctity of marriage, and the common-sense, common-law definition of marriage being between one man and one woman that has prevailed in my Country from its inception, and in the West in general for two millenia.

Obama said, " I know there are those who dismiss such beliefs as happy talk." Well take it from me, these rhetorical tricks are not happy talk. They are an a calculated deception intended to hide Obama's radical leftist ideology and prevent any real debate and discussion of ideas and issues in this election.

Don't fall for it. And vote accordingly.
