WHAT CHIRAC MUST DO TO SAVE FRANCE

RESIGN. SERIOUSLY. IMMEDIATELY.

Here's what solidified this in my mind: a great post by PUBLIUS PUNDIT. PP feels that French government INACTION might lead to a far-right backlash which would engulf France in a crude xenophobic crackdown - AND that this might prevent them from making REAL REFORM. Publus Pundit wrote:

"Even more possible than that, this crisis will force the moderate center-right, which has shown itself now to be entirely too weak, to move farther to the right, therefore culminating in a greater consensus on simply cracking down on the immigrant population instead of addressing the the fundamental problem of the lack of opportunity created by the French social model."

This is a straw man. WHY!? Because Sarkozy GETS IT. He can capture the votes of the dismayed and fed up French and prevent Le Pen's NF from gaining election. And Sarkozy WOULD adddress the fundamentals. Sarkozy has called for France using the Anglo-American economic/tax model.

The "primary" between Sarkozy and Villepin will decide the next presidential race. The Left is completely discredited and unimportant - in disarray and IRRELEVANT. If the Right nominates Villepin, then Le Pen's NF might win the presidency and the PM. That might take France down too extreme a path - as Publius Pundit warns. BUT, if the Right nominates Sarkozy, then he will win HANDILY - with a huge mandate. And he will be able to transform France.

The REAL PROBLEM IS: what happens between now and 2007, REPEAT 2007! THAT'S when the race is SCHEDULED to happen. That's TOO FAR IN THE FUTURE. FRANCE NEEDS CHANGE NOW.

What France DESPERATELY NEEDS... IS... FOR CHIRAC TO RESIGN!

Chirac has been an abysmal failure. De Gaulle resigned. For the Republique. Chirac should do the same. AT ONCE. And call immediate elections. Then Sarkozy can be elected and make a COUP DE TORCHON - a clean slate.

C'mon Jacques baby: take one for the team!
