IDF REENTERS GAZA

Is this the start of a more positive development?

(IsraelNN.com) IDF troops entered Gaza Wednesday afternoon to pursue terrorists who had been planting a bomb near the security fence.

The soldiers opened fire, killing one of the terrorists and injuring another. A third man was apprehended. All were members of the Islamic Jihad terror group. The terrorists detonated two bombs during the exchange, but failed to injure any Israeli security personnel.

If the IDF is now being allowed to make a convincing pursuit of terrorists and make a full-scale operation, that'll be a good thing.

In a related development, there was a solidarity march today in Sderot, with at least 1,500 people taking part.

Red meat seems to increase breast cancer risk -- but does it?

PETA would love this as it seems to be a comparison of meat-eaters with vegetarians. That vegetarians suffer fewer adverse outcomes could be due to many factors -- reduced total calorie intake, greater care about lifestyle etc. Making meat consumption the cause rather than a marker goes beyond the evidence

EATING even small amounts of red meat can greatly increase a woman's risk of breast cancer, according to a study published today. Post-menopausal women who ate large amounts (more than 103 grams) of processed meat a day could be 64 per cent more likely to suffer the disease, while the researchers found as little as 57g of beef, pork or lamb a day showed an effect. Even younger women faced a slightly raised risk if they ate red meat every day, according to the study which appears in the British Journal of Cancer.

The study, led by Professor Janet Cade of the University of Leeds, involved studying the diets of 35,000 women aged between 35 and 69 for eight years. The research states: "Women, both pre and post-menopausal, who consumed the most meat had the highest risk of breast cancer. "Women generally consuming most total meat, red and processed meat were at the highest increased risk compared with non-meat consumers."....

But the study was dismissed as "rubbish" by Sandy Crombie, chairman of the Scottish region of The Guild of Q Butchers, who pointed out that 56g of meat was roughly half a quarter-pound burger. He told the newspaper: "Two ounces (57g) is absolutely tiny. I have never heard such rubbish, it's a tiny amount. "This is ridiculous, it's silly, it's barely worth talking about."

Hostage drill at NJ school features mock 'Christian terrorists'

We read:

"The head of a national, Texas-based pro-family group says a recent hostage drill at a New Jersey high school, which portrayed conservative Christians as terrorists, is reflective of a dangerous philosophy that has become prevalent in many parts of America, where it is having negative effects on education.

A local paper reports that a drill at Burlington Township High School in New Jersey involved police portraying mock gunmen, described as "members of a right-wing fundamentalist group called the 'New Crusaders' who don't believe in the separation of church and state." The fake gunmen were said to have been "seeking justice because the daughter of one [member] had been expelled for praying before class."

Nancy Pelosi's lack of judgment continues as is demonstrated by her trip to Syria. White House spokeswoman, Dana Perino had this to say about the trip:

This is a country that is a state sponsor of terror, one that is trying to disrupt the Saniora government in Lebanon and one that is allowing foreign fighters to flow into Iraq from its borders.

This is what the President himself had to say:

Photo opportunities and/or meetings with President Assad lead the Assad government to believe they're part of the mainstream of the international community, when in fact they're a state sponsor of terror, when in fact they're helping expedite -- or at least wont stop -- the movement of foreign fighters from Syria into Iraq, when in fact they have done little to nothing to rein in militant Hamas and Hezbollah, and when in fact they destabilize the Lebanese democracy. The position of this administration is that the best way to meet with a leader like Assad or people from Syria, is in the larger context of trying to get the global community to help change his behavior.

This is what Rush had to say:

So the president is basically saying, "Well, look, the guy's a state sponsor of terrorists, terrorism, and they're not part of the mainstream of civilized nations. Going over there and treating them like that sends a mixed message, and what it also does is undermine the US government's approach here."

Make no mistake: that's Pelosi's intent. Pelosi's intent -- and she has three Republicans with her over there, folks. It wasn't hard to find three Republicans that want to try to score points at home in some districts that might have a majority of anti-war people. You never know. But she's over there trying to undermine the United States. Now, in her mind, she's trying to undermine George W. Bush. In her mind also, she's trying to establish an identity and a career for herself. You can't take that out of it. She's the queen bee. Not mentioned here is the reaction that somebody like Hillary Clinton will have to this. It's not sitting well in a lot of places but you'll never hear that stated publicly.

Nevertheless, Pelosi still thinks its a good idea despite the kind of message it sends. You really have to wonder what the logic is here.

The students then got on the ground and laid down in front of his car. Students report security officials then picked them up and carried them away so Rove could leave. Nobody was arrested.

...it's called Free Speech.

But when Republicans bang on a few doors after getting thrown out of a Florida presidential election recount...

ABU GHOSH MAYOR SETS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE

Salim Jaber, the mayor of Abu Ghosh, spoke recently at a Habad rally. He faced criticism for it, but stood strong. This is a good thing. During the War of Independence in the late 1940s, the Abu Ghosh village was allied with the Jewish side in the battle, and while there may be some rotten apples there today, the town they now are is still a standout example in good Jewish-Arab relations.

Are homosexuals gay or queer?

Once upon a time, in the slightly more rational past, the word "queer" was objected to by homosexuals as being highly derogatory. For a while homosexuals were "camp" instead but the word "gay" eventually became almost universally embraced as the "correct" term. Lots of Australians and Brits continued to call them "poofters" or "poofs" but that was wicked.

Now, however, we seem to have reversed gears. "Queer" seems to be OK now (as in the TV show "Queer eye for the straight guy"). But "gay" is so bad that even children will be pursued by the British police for using it:

"A father launched a furious attack against the police yesterday for investigating claims that his 10-year-old son had called a schoolfriend "gay" in an email. Company director Alan Rawlinson said he was astounded after two police officers arrived at his home in Bold Heath, Cheshire, to speak to his son George. The officers were called after a complaint from the parent of another boy at his son's school in Widnes.

Confusing, isn't it? What it DOES go to show is that the old Leftist obsession with changing the language is pointless. If something is disliked, ANY word used to describe it will become derogatory.

There was an interesting older instance of that in Australia. Just after the war, Australia got a lot of immigrants from war-torn Europe and Anglo-Australians were not at that time very impressed by them -- largely because the poor English of the immigrants created unaccustomed communication difficulties. Words like "dago", "wop", "wog" and "reffo" were commonly used to refer to the immigrants.

But the government decided that Australia needed the immigrants concerned and insisted that they be referred to as "New Australians". Very rapidly, however, the term "New Australians" came to be used disdainfully too.

And what I always think is the most amusing example of mealy-mouthed language is the way economically backward countries were once described. They started out "savage", then "backward", then "poor", then "underdeveloped" and then "developing".

At that point, people realized that "developing" was precisely what most of the countries concerned were NOT doing so we seem now to have settled on the term: "less developed". "Savage" would be a more informative description of many of them.

The Leftist cry of "peace"

Now that the U.S. Congress seems intent on "peace at any price" in Iraq, it may be instructive to take a look at Leftist cries for "peace" generally -- cries that have in fact always been cries for America's defeat.

History can be both suprising and puzzling. There are probably few people alive today who remember that Leftists were once the most nationalistic side of politics (for the evidence that they were, see here). How could the people who now regard patriotism and nationalism as puerile once have been red-hot for conquest and national glory? Similarly, how can the sort of people who, from Robespierre to Pol Pot, have murdered people in droves, also be the ones who go out on the streets and demonstrate for "peace"?

Both those phenonena are part of the larger truth that Leftism is consistent only at the psychological level. It will always be driven by hate, anger and envy but the way in which such feelings are given a hopefully plausible outlet will vary with the times. Leftists may often resort to talk of high principles but they will abandon those principles in a moment if that seems convenient. The way the far-Left of American politics were pro-Hitler during the Hitler/Stalin alliance and then immediately proceeded to march in the opposite direction when Hitler invaded Russia is a notorious example of such "flexibility" but there are many such examples in modern times.

Perhaps the most amusing example of that in the 21st century so far is the way in which Leftist intellectuals dug up the principles of the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 to justify their opposition to the American overthrow of Saddam Hussein (e.g. here). Something as antique and "establishment" as the Peace of Westphalia would once have been responded to by Leftists with at best a raised eyebrow.

The Vietnam era (the 1960s and 1970s) marked one of the big changes in Leftist thinking. America's involvement in Vietnam was initiated by an old-fashioned patriot, J.F. Kennedy, perhaps best known today for his quote from Pericles: "Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for your country". And patriotism remains strong among the American people generally to this day -- which is why mainstream Democrat politicians always have to huff and puff about people "questioning their patriotism" -- questions which are normally well justified.

Among Leftist thinkers, however, Kennedy was a holdover from the pre-1945 world in which Leftists were the great asserters of American supremacy, authority, glory etc. One only has to remember the founder of the "Progressive" party, Theodore Roosevelt, to know what American Leftists were like from the late 19th century onwards. TR was a great critic of business and arguably the most successful Greenie of all times (America's national parks are mostly his doing) but he also put his trust in battleships and managed to get America to undertake two successful wars of conquest in Cuba and the Philippines. He even took part in the first of those personally and was a great propagandist for war as an ennobling enterprise that cleansed the national spirit -- a theme later taken up enthusiastically by a certain German leader.

The antics of that German leader did however greatly discredit aggressive nationalism in the eyes of the world so Leftists could not continue with it. They would have looked like dinosaurs if they had -- and very dangerous dinosaurs at that. So a reversal was needed. But such a far-reaching reversal could not be achived overnight and the American Left remained at least patriotic for some time -- with Kennedy being just about the last significant holdover.

In general, however, the memory of past beliefs and attitudes had faded by the 1960s -- particularly among the young -- and the new anti-nationalist stance that seemed more in tune with the postwar era could reach full flower. So we had the "peace" movement of that era, which was much more a rejection of American assertiveness and wisdom than it was about peace.

The idea that Leftists favour peace is of course absurd. The hate, anger and envy that drive Leftists make them inherently aggressive and bloodthirsty -- as we see whenever they gain absolute power -- from the French revolutionaries onward through Trotsky, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot -- not to mention more minor revolutionaries. And the great violence that often characterized "peace" demonstrations of the Vietnam era (see e.g. here) gave the lie to any claim that these Leftists were any different from their predecessors.

When Leftists of the post-1945 period have advocated peace, it has had one purpose only -- to curb the strength, options and influence of their own country. It is an anti-nationalist and anti-patriotic stratagem. It is intended to show them as the wise and benevolent ones who know better than the national leadership.

And the long buildup to the invasion of Iraq by Anglo-Saxon forces in 2003 saw a great upsurge in Leftists taking to the streets to demonstrate for "peace". In this respect the new Left is very similar to the old Left of the cold-war era. Throughout the Cold War era, a great cry of Leftist demonstators and their supporters was "Peace" -- which essentially meant: "Do not attack our friends, the Communists -- or even prepare to defend yourself against them".

But in typically hypocritical fashion, few Leftists were straightfoward in admitting their motivations. The peaceniks of the Vietnam era usually justified their opposition to that war by promoting the fantasy that they were the only ones who could see the evils of war and accused anyone who supported any military action of being a "warmonger".

But in fact one of the most revealing evidences of the dishonesty and hidden agendas of the Left is the way that "antiwar" demonstrations to this day commonly erupt into violence. Below is an excerpt about one of the fairly routine events of the Iraq war era:

Two reports of the March 20 2007 "peace" protests in Milwaukee near the University of Wisconsin campus

Police reported arresting at least four people and questioning about 20 more after protesters damaged an Army recruiting office on Milwaukee's east side Monday night. Milwaukee police Sgt. Eric Pfeiffer said officers were called to the area when Iraq War protesters wearing black clothing and ski masks were reported to be carrying torches, setting off smoke bombs and throwing paint while approaching the recruitment center. Pfeiffer told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel someone threw an object through a window at the recruitment center and spread what appeared to be feces inside before running away.

Peace Action Wisconsin does not condone violence, said the group's project organizer Julie Enslow, but some anti-war protesters might feel the need to be violent to get their point across. "We do not use those tactics ourselves, but the movement is very broad, and as this war continues, the anti-war movement is going to take many forms - not all of which everyone feels comfortable with," Enslow said.

An anti-war rally at O'Donnell Park on Saturday drew a large crowd that listened to several speakers, including U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee), before marching to the Reuss Federal Plaza, Enslow said. The peaceful gathering contrasted sharply with the arrests Monday night at the Army recruiting center near the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, where protesters broke a window and threw smoke bombs, paint and human excrement, police said. There were no injuries reported.

This is bad, bad news. This decision, Massachusetts v. EPA, will no doubt become the Global Warming version of Roe v. Wade.

British schools drop Holocaust lessons to avoid "offence"

A sad day when the truth has become offensive:

"Teachers are dropping controversial subjects such as the Holocaust and the Crusades from history lessons because they do not want to cause offence to children from certain races or religions, a report claims. A lack of factual knowledge among some teachers, particularly in primary schools, is also leading to "shallow" lessons on emotive and difficult subjects, according to the study by the Historical Association.

The report, produced with funding from the Department for Education, said that where teachers and staff avoided emotive and controversial history, their motives were generally well intentioned. "Staff may wish to avoid causing offence or appearing insensitive to individuals or groups in their classes. In particular settings, teachers of history are unwilling to challenge highly contentious or charged versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship," it concluded. However, it was concerned that this could lead to divisions within school, and that it might also put pupils off history.

Passover Seder

My best wishes to my Jewish readers at this holy time. I hope they have had or will be having (timezones are pesky) a good and fortifying Seder that helps them to deal wisely with the many follies and false gods of this world.

I like the idea of the four cups of wine at the seder. In my Presbyterian days, all we got at Communion was a tiny glass of unfermented grape juice! Quite pathetic.

There is a fascinating article here by Charles Murray which looks at the reasons behind the exceptionally high average IQ among Jews. Unlike Cochran et al., he argues that high IQ is not recent among Jews. He goes far back into history in his explanations and certainly ends on an amusing note for the serious scientist that he is.

The symbolic encroachment of Islam at the pinnacles of British power is already clear. At Oxford University, town residents recently but unsuccessfully fought the building of a Center for Islamic Studies, and in the House of Lords the number of Muslim members has gone from none to seven during the decade of the Labor government.

WHILE THE UK'S LEFT-WING PM COWERS AT THE FEET OF THE MULLAH'S IF IRAN, THE TOWNS AND CITIES WITHIN HER OWN SHORES ARE RAPIDLY BECOMING ISLAMIFIED. 70 YEARS. AND THEN SHARIA.

UNLESS EUROPE TAKES HARSH ACTION NOW, EURABIA IS INEVITABLE, AND WITH IT THE END OF A CIVILIZATION.

THIS IS A REAL THREAT - UNLIKE "MAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING".

AND UNLIKE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE, WE CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS THREAT. BUT THE TIME IS NOW. OR NEVER.

AND MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT: UNLESS THEY FIGHT BACK, THE INSIDIOUS ABSORPTION OF THE EU INTO THE "MUSLIM-BORG" WILL HAPPEN.)

PS: I USED THE TERM "RAPIDLY" IN THE TITLE OF THIS POST, ADVISEDLY. THIS WILL HAPPEN WITHIN THE NEXT FEW-TO-SEVERAL DECADES. COMPARED TO THE LIFE-SPAN OF THE UK'S CULTURE, THIS IS VERY FAST. IF THEY RESIST BETTER THAN THEY HAVE TO DATE, THEN MAYBE IT WILL BE SLOWED - BUT I DOUBT THAT IT WILL BE STOPPED. I PRAY IT WILL. BUT I FEAR IT WILL NOT.

OUR DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Over a month ago I did a post entitled, Making an Impact on Your Culture. I'm finally getting around to doing my post on how our day at Jefferson City actually went.

First of all, in addition to my kids learning a lot, I learned a lot. Each of the kids had to write their own bill and then present them in front of everyone. During this process you learned how bills were introduced on the floor, how a Representative or Senator would speak out on what they thought of the bill and the process it went through to actually get the bill passed. They had the kids use the "Parli Pro" language such as, "Would the gentleman/lady yield to a question?" and "I call for a division of the house!" It was very interesting.

The Certificates that they received at the end of the day talked about how they had learned:

--How the Government is set up
--How to write and debate bills
--How to speak in public
--The importance of praying for my Legislators and others who represent me

I felt they had learned all that and more. What I found amusing was that in debating the bills it could get very tedious and boring. I sat there imagining what it would be like to be in D.C. and have to listen to Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd ramble on about the most inane things. It would take a lot of patience to have to sit through listening to other politicians who think too much of themselves go on and on.

The day also highlighted the differences in my children's temperaments. My son raised his hand every time he got a chance whether he had anything to say or not. Although, amazingly several times I was very impressed with what he had to say and I felt good that the training of my kids hasn't been in vain. I was surprised at how some of the other kids' bills were small forms of socialism and Calvin said more than once that the Government should not be telling us what to do. Bravo!! He did a great job of getting up in front of everyone and talking. If any of my kids ever go into politics, I have a feeling it will be him.

My oldest daughter is the exact opposite and doesn't like being in front of others and my other daughter is probably somewhere in between.

We also went on a tour of the Capitol building and learned a lot of really neat things. I especially enjoyed learning the history behind the room that was filled with a huge mural entitled, A Social History of Missouri by Thomas Hart Benton. The details were fascinating. Benton originally painted it in 1937 and they have been able to preserve it all this time.

It was a great day and worth the time and effort that went into making it possible.

Caroline Glick talks about the trip made to Homesh in Israel this past week.

The return of thousands of Israelis to the ruins of Homesh village in northern Samaria this week was a bolt from the blue. A rare combination of wisdom, morality and great timing, the demonstration forced the local media to acknowledge the strategic folly and moral bankruptcy of the expulsion and withdrawal policy that transformed some ten thousand Israeli Jews into internal refugees a year and a half ago.

Homesh was one of the 21 communities razed by Ariel Sharon's government in August 2005. Monday thousands marched to its ruins and pledged to rebuild it. Although by Tuesday radio and television newscasters were predictably agitating for the IDF to violently remove the demonstrators, their anti-settler prattle came off flat. The thrill was gone.

After the war in Lebanon last summer, and Gaza's post-withdrawal transformation into a mini-Taliban state, it is no longer possible to sound intelligent while advocating Israeli withdrawals and expulsions. Since few people are willing to sound like fools, most of the broadcasters acknowledged the withdrawal's strategic failure.

Perhaps they'd even think to resign their media posts to show that they realize the game is over?

TO REDUCE MAN-MADE CO2 EMISSIONS, I THINK ALL THE ECO-NUTSIES SHOULD STOP BREATHING. HERE'S WHY:

A HUMAN CONTRIBUTES 1KG/DAY OF CO2 - JUST BY BREATHING. (PEOPLE WHO EXERCISE CONTRIBUTE EVEN MORE.)

IN AN AVERAGE LIFETIME, A PERSON MIGHT CONTRIBUTE 30,000 KG OF CO2 INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.

ABOUT HALF THE USA POPULATION FEELS THAT HUMANS ARE CONTRIBUTING TO MUCH CO2 TO THE ATMOSPHERE - AND THAT THIS CONTRIBUTION "THREATENS CIVILIZATION AND LIFE ON EARTH AS WE KNOW IT."

WELL, THEY COULD REDUCE THE CONTRIBUTION BY 45,000,000,000,000KG (THAT'S TRILLION) OVER THE NEXT CENTURY BY MERELY CEASING TO RESPIRE. AND THEY CAN START RIGHT NOW.

THERE IS NO LEGISLATION NECESSARY. NO TREATY, EITHER. JUST PLAIN OLD DIRECT ACTION. IT'D ACTUALLY CHEAPER THAN BUYING A PRIUS - OR CARBON CREDITS. IT COSTS NOTHING.

AND THERE WOULD ACTUALLY BE FURTHER REDUCTIONS SINCE THESE DEAD PEOPLE WOULDN'T BE BURNING ANY FOSSIL FUELS. IT WOULD SAVE MORE THAN TRILLIONS! MAYBE QUADRILLIONS!

EUTHANASIA OF THE ECO-NUTSIES BY THE ECO-NUTSIES - FOR THE COMMON GOOD, OF COURSE.

OK to Offend Christians -- again

Homosexuals, blacks and Muslims must not even be made "uncomfortable" by anything that someone else does or says but no such rules apply to Christians, apparently. The Roger Smith Hotel in NYC planned a display during Holy Week which featured a sculpture of a naked Jesus with genitals displayed. It was intended to provoke and it did. A prominent Catholic organization called for a boycott of the hotel as a result. So the hotel backed off.

Did Leftists applaud the banning of such an "insensitive" display and rejoice that Catholics can now feel "comfortable" to enter the hotel? No way! They frothed at the mouth about it and called the boycott letter "hate speech"!
