One in five babies born to foreign mother in UK

One in five babies born in Britain last year was born to a woman from overseas, according to the first official analysis of the impact of migration on fertility.


Immigrant mothers are having far more children than their British counterparts - fuelling the biggest rise in population since the 1960s baby boom.

The highest birth rates were among Pakistani, Indian or Bangladeshi-born mothers, who gave birth to five per cent of all UK babies last year.

A further four per cent were born to mothers from EU countries outside Britain and Ireland, with a growing number from eastern Europe.

The Pakistani rate of 4.7 children per mother is almost three times higher than the British rate of 1.7.

5 Myths About Sick Old Europe... Not so long ago, American pundits and economic analysts were snidely touting U.S. economic superiority to the "sick old man" of Europe. What a difference a few months can make... But what about Europe? You may be surprised to learn how our estranged transatlantic partner has been faring during these roller-coaster times - and how successfully it has been knocking down the Europessimist myths about it... Beware of stereotypes based on ideological assumptions. As Europe's economy has surged, it has maintained fairness and equality. Unlike in the United States, with its rampant inequality and lack of universal access to affordable health care and higher education, Europeans have harnessed their economic engine to create wealth that is broadly distributed.

Super. Except that the US could do a lot more about those inequalities if they put a little less blood and treasure into European defense. It's really easy to harness your economic engine when you don't have to have a military because the US is treaty-bound to come to your defense in case of an attack.

Even if that wasn't true, this would still be a text-book example of what we teach our undergrads to call a "straw argument" and what we prefer to call "breathtaking, probably intentional obtuseness." The conservative critique of the European welfare state is only partly - and not mainly - based on its economic consequences. Even if they were economically sustainable, cradle-to-grave, make-more-on-unemployment-than-you-do-working welfare policies would still be a bad idea. They estrange different segments of society from each other, hinder public mingling and assimilation, and foster a seething culture of entitlement. This is a more pointed critique of Europe's socioeconomic policies than any economic concerns.

The WaPo published an article purporting to debunk conservative criticisms of the European welfare state without mentioning either immigration or demographics. Sophistication.

"YOUTHS" RIOTING, BURNING POLICE CARS AGAIN IN PARIS

No word on their religion. We're thinking they might be Quakers:

Dozens of hooded youths battered two police vehicles with metal bars, set fire to more than a dozen parked cars and torched a community center in northeast France, officials said Friday. The rampage in a tough neighborhood in Saint-Dizier, about 120 miles east of Paris, revived memories of a wave of car burnings, vandalism and clashes with police in 2005 fanned by feelings of alienation among French youths of Arab and African origin. Authorities were not sure what sparked the violence by 30-40 youths late Thursday. The trouble began when firefighters escorted by police entered the Vert-Bois neighborhood in response to a fire alarm. Two injuries were reported. A police officer was treated for cuts from broken glass, and a firefighter was struck in the arm with a metal bar... The youths fled the scene and no arrests were made, officials said.

No arrests? That'll show em. French officials, by the by, speculate that the mysterious (perhaps atheist?) "youths" have been driven to violent rioting by unemployment. Obviously.

CLITHEROE, England — On a chilly night this winter, this pristine town in some of Britain’s most untouched countryside voted to allow a former Christian church to become a mosque. Britain may continue to regard itself as a Christian nation. But practicing Muslims are likely to outnumber church-attending Christians in several decades, according to a recent survey by Christian Research, a group that specializes in documenting the status of Christianity in Britain. ... With a population of 14,500, a Norman castle and an Anglican church established in 1122, Clitheroe is tucked away in Lancashire County in the north. People here liked to think they represented a last barrier to the mosques that had become features in surrounding industrial towns. ...

But the fight is hardly over. Beneath the official vote lies a river of resentment among those who fear that the broader patterns in Britain will emerge here. In one sign of the tensions, some of the church’s windows have been smashed. ...

Today, Britain has fewer than 500,000 practicing Methodists, and of its Christians, only about 6 percent are regulars at church, according to Peter Brierley, executive director of Christian Research. Though numbers for comparison are not known precisely, most agree that Britain’s Muslims are far more regular mosque attendants. The symbolic encroachment of Islam at the pinnacles of British power is already clear. At Oxford University, town residents recently but unsuccessfully fought the building of a Center for Islamic Studies, and in the House of Lords the number of Muslim members has gone from none to seven during the decade of the Labor government.

WHILE THE UK'S LEFT-WING PM COWERS AT THE FEET OF THE MULLAH'S IF IRAN, THE TOWNS AND CITIES WITHIN HER OWN SHORES ARE RAPIDLY BECOMING ISLAMIFIED. 70 YEARS. AND THEN SHARIA.

PS: I USED THE TERM "RAPIDLY" IN THE TITLE OF THIS POST, ADVISEDLY. THIS WILL HAPPEN WITHIN THE NEXT FEW-TO-SEVERAL DECADES. COMPARED TO THE LIFE-SPAN OF THE UK'S CULTURE, THIS IS VERY FAST. IF THEY RESIST BETTER THAN THEY HAVE TO DATE, THEN MAYBE IT WILL BE SLOWED - BUT I DOUBT THAT IT WILL BE STOPPED. I PRAY IT WILL. BUT I FEAR IT WILL NOT.
