So now we know. In 2006, as Israel was bombing the Lebanese highways, power supplies, airport and oil reservoirs, the Lebanese prime minister was hoping that Israel would finish “the job” quickly and successfully.

Now we know. As over a quarter of the population was displaced from their homes under a threat of missiles, tank fire and artillery, the then commander of the army and now president of Lebanon was letting the Israeli government know that the Lebanese army would stand-down. As 10,000 homes were destroyed and over 1,300 Lebanese citizens were killed, the Lebanese government’s main concern was that this very real and very brutal Israeli reinvasion might lead to a “reoccupation” of Lebanon by Syria.

The recent publication of a new spate of WikiLeaks cables in the Lebanese daily newspaper Al-Akhbaris is bound to electrify the already on-edge political standoff in Lebanon.

As Najib Mikati continues to try to form a government, the March 14 coalition continues to escalate their demands that Hezbollah disarms and the publication of the indictments in the special tribunal of Lebanon continue to loom on the horizon. These leaked diplomatic cables will either push the country over the edge or more likely add another layer to the cynicism, apathy and exhaustion that form like a scar tissue on the surface of the Lebanese public.

The day after the attacks on Lebanon began, Prime Minister Sinioura described the Israeli bombardment of the airport, highways and civilian areas as “disproportionate” and “unhelpful.” Reading the cables, it becomes clear that what Sinioura meant was that Israeli military actions were unhelpful to what was a common goal of the Israeli and Lebanese governments: the disarmament of Hezbollah, the neutralisation of its power in Lebanon, and the end of the armed resistance in Lebanon to continued Israeli occupation.

In 2009, Simcox authored a report for the CSC spotlighting the role of repressive regimes in funding British universities. He found that regimes like those in Iran, China, and Saudi Arabia “were essentially buying control over British academia.”

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal appointed university management committee members in Edinburgh and Cambridge. Durham University accepted cash from Iran and admitted that “pro-regime speakers” had been permitted to monopolize a school event. And Beijing was permitted to establish educational centers it termed part of its “foreign propaganda strategy.”

Though no similar study has been done, American universities have similarly courted endowments from some of the same players.

Then it's time to start investigating them too. You'll note that the Saudi prince mentioned is also very chummy with Rupert Murdoch, something still not widely discussed, which is very troubling. Is it not time to raise this as a serious issue?

HAMAS ROCKET ATTACK ONE MILLION

JERUSALEM – Palestinian militants in Gaza fired more than 50 rockets into Israel on Saturday, the heaviest barrage in two years, Israeli officials said, while Hamas police beat up and confiscated equipment from reporters.

A Hamas official was killed and four civilians were wounded when Israel hit back with tank fire and air strikes, said Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Adham Abu Salmia.

Notice if you will the blatant, disgusting downplay of the terrorism part by using the word "militant" to describe the terrorists, to say nothing of the needless highlight of casualty claims from the Hamas side.

Israeli police spokesman Tamir Avtabi said Gaza militants fired 54 mortar shells at Israeli border communities within 15 minutes. He said two Israeli civilians were lightly wounded by shrapnel and residents were advised to stay at home or in bomb shelters.

Hayim Yellin, head of the Eshkol region where the mortars exploded, said they were the same type as those intercepted on a cargo ship last week loaded with weapons Israel said were sent by Iran to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he will file a complaint at the U.N. after Saturday's unusually large barrage of rockets. In a statement, Lieberman said the Palestinians "primary goal is destroying Israel."

Indeed it is. Now we can see why it's good that the ship last week was stopped, because more of this would've reached Hamas then.

How to turn normal human beings into murderous and hateful psychopaths who blindly obey their totalitarian systems and its authorities suppressing and killing innocent people? In short: How to create a terrorist?

Violent and murderous political, ethnic and religious regimes have used the same effective methods throughout history all over the world. The procedure consists of two simple steps that are repeated again and again:

1) You force a person to repeat the system’s doctrine again and again for months and years until he or she knows every word by heart and it pervades his or her whole way of thinking and it is the only truth they believe in.

2) You beat and scare the person (best if this is done randomly and severely), thus forcing him or her to become insensitive and unempathic in order to be able to bare the physical and psychological suffering and in order to increase feelings of anger, frustration and fear – feelings that are then directed against the system’s enemies.

In this way you will create a person whose whole being is pervaded by the system’s doctrine and who has lost the ability to feel both his own and others’ pain. You will have an emotionally cold person that blindly follows his authorities and their political or religious doctrine. If you use this method on a child who is in the process of developing its personality, the learned doctrine will simply become a part of the child’s personality. The psychological impact of the physical abuse will also be deeper. As children and youth are dependent on acceptance from adults, they are easier to influence.

Being a child psychologist I was shocked to realise that this is exactly what is done to millions of Muslim children in both the Muslim world and the West.

As spring continues to unfold on Saturn, April showers on the planet’s largest moon, Titan, have brought methane rain to its equatorial deserts, as revealed in images captured by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft.

This is the first time scientists have obtained current evidence of rain soaking Titan’s surface at low latitudes. The observations are released today in the journal Science.

“Titan continues to surprise and amaze us,” said Alfred McEwen, a planetary scientist at the UA’s Lunar and Planetary Lab and a co-author on the paper. “After years of dry weather in the tropics, an area the size of Arizona and New Mexico combined was darkened by methane rain over a period of just a few weeks.”

Extensive rain from large cloud systems, spotted by Cassini’s cameras in late 2010, has apparently darkened the surface of the moon. The best explanation is these areas remained wet after methane rainstorms.

The new findings, combined with earlier results reported in Geophysical Research Letters last month, show the weather systems of Titan’s thick atmosphere and the changes wrought on the moon’s surface are affected by the changing seasons.

“It’s amazing to be watching such familiar activity as rainstorms and seasonal changes in weather patterns on a distant, icy satellite,” said Elizabeth Turtle, a Cassini imaging team associate at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Md., and lead author of today’s publication. “These observations are helping us to understand how Titan works as a system, as well as similar processes on our own planet.”

BRITISH LAW MAY BE CHANGED TO PREVENT LIBEL TOURISM

Amiel Ungar reports that Britain looks like it's changing its laws to get rid of libel tourism:

Britain is about to change its libel laws. This development rates as world news for a few reasons: Britain will no longer be the favored site for "libel tourism," which will have an impact on publications covering topical issues such as terrorism and those who fund it. Secondly, it demonstrates that when the United States changes its laws to right an injustice, other countries, even those with venerable legal traditions like Britain, have to follow suit.

Under the current law, one could bring suit against someone who published a book in the United States or an English Internet site, however obscure, for libel. The plaintiff did not have to demonstrate that he had sustained any actual loss. He just had to say that he was likely to do so. British libel laws placed the burden of proof on the defendant rather than on the plaintiff.

The British decision can be viewed as a victory for Doctor Rachel Ehrenfeld, an Israeli-American counterterrorism expert. She published a book entitled Funding Evil: How Terrorism Is Financed and How to Stop It, in which she accused Khalid bin Mahfouz, a banker to the Saudi royal family and one of the world's plutocrats. of setting up a banking system to assist Osama bin Laden and using his charitable foundations as a front for terrorist organizations.

[...] A person submitting a libel suit will have to prove, according to Kenneth Clark, the Secretary of Justice, that England and Wales are "clearly the most appropriate place in which to bring an action."

According to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, "We are addressing libel tourism by tightening the rules, so that it is much harder to bring overseas claims to our courts when there is little connection to the UK. If such a link can't be demonstrated our judges will simply turn the case away."

English may eventually be supplanted by Mandarin Chinese, but as of now it is the world's lingua franca and therefore this is far more than a legal nicety. It is a victory for free speech worldwide.

It remains to be seen if other countries around Europe will follow suit to boot, including France, which needs to abolish their own laws favoring the plaintiff in a lawsuit. If Britain does abolish their screwed up law, it'll be welcome alright, but it's just a start, since many other countries have to follow the example too, and eliminate any and all unjust rulings. One way to do this is by forming movements that campaign at their local parliaments for alterations.

John Sexton at Big Journalism writes about how CNN used quotation marks as a form of terrorism denial. You've probably heard of the concept of bigotry denial, now you have the tactic of quotation marks to serve for desecration of the memory of terror victims.

Israel is quite right to demand an apology from CNN for doing this. Their defense of their tactic is pathetic, and they do not deserve to be watched.

Update: if anyone wants an earlier example of quotation tactics, here's a post from Comics Beat 3 years ago about the terrorist attacks that were planned against Kurt Westergaard, but thankfully foiled. The headline reads as 'Cartoonist target of "terror plot"'. And though they say at the end that a potentially even more horrible story was averted, they still showed some signs of disrespect by beginning their post that way.

March 17, 2011 Big Government Mandates Defective Washing Machines

There is no part of your life statist liberals will not intrude upon and diminish — not even your washing machine:

In 1996, top-loaders were pretty much the only type of washer around, and they were uniformly high quality. When Consumer Reports tested 18 models, 13 were "excellent" and five were "very good." By 2007, though, not one was excellent and seven out of 21 were "fair" or "poor." This month came the death knell:Consumer Reports simply dismissed all conventional top-loaders as "often mediocre or worse."

What happened to them? Federal energy efficiency mandates prevent them from working properly, by limiting water use and eliminating agitator function. Apparently bureauweenies think they should do all the agitating.

Efficiency standards for washing machines aren't as well-known as those for light bulbs, which will effectively prohibit 100-watt incandescent bulbs next year. Nor are they the butt of jokes as low-flow toilets are. But in their quiet destruction of a highly affordable, perfectly satisfactory appliance, washer standards demonstrate the harmfulness of the ever-growing body of efficiency mandates.

Our rulers want us to use less effective front-loaders instead:

Front-loaders meet federal standards more easily than top-loaders. Because they don't fully immerse their laundry loads, they use less hot water and therefore less energy. But, as Americans are increasingly learning, front-loaders are expensive, often have mold problems, and don't let you toss in a wayward sock after they've started.

When the Department of Energy began raising the standard, it promised that "consumers will have the same range of clothes washers as they have today," and cleaning ability wouldn't be changed. That's not how it turned out.

In 2007, after the more stringent rules had kicked in, Consumer Reports noted that some top-loaders were leaving its test swatches "nearly as dirty as they were before washing." "For the first time in years," CR said, "we can't call any washer a Best Buy." Contrast that with the magazine's 1996 report that, "given warm enough water and a good detergent, any washing machine will get clothes clean." …

[E]ven though these newer types of washers cost about twice as much as conventional top-loaders, overall they didn't clean as well as the 1996 models.

That's liberal "progress" in a nutshell: everything gets worse and costs more due to government decree.
