The Israeli commando raid Monday on an aid flotilla, which left at least nine people dead, has dragged relations between Israel and Turkey to a new low, political experts here say, threatening to derail diplomatic relations between two close American allies.

Turkey, a NATO member, has long been Israel’s closest friend in the Muslim world, with $3 billion in trade and strong ties between the countries’ militaries and governments. But relations began to deteriorate during Israel’s war in Gaza, when Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, publicly sparred with Israel’s president, Shimon Peres, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Monday’s raid prompted street protests in Turkey and a strong official reaction, with Ankara recalling its ambassador from Israel, summoning Israel’s ambassador and canceling planned joint military exercises. That was enough to raise alarms among analysts here, who said it could seriously jeopardize already battered diplomatic relations between the countries.

“This will be perceived as a kind of declaration of war on Turkey,” said Cengiz Candar, a columnist for Radikal, a Turkish daily. “Political dialogue will cease. It’s not possible to contain the deterioration in relations anymore.”

Israel has long had a blockade against Gaza - to hurt Hamas.

When the islamists and their leftist cohorts announced this flotilla, Israel announced that they would be willing to deliver all the aid via land - and would let it in via Egypt, too.

This would allow inspections.

In a press conference hours after the incident, Barak said that Israel was prepared to accept the consequences of its actions and would continue to protect its autonomy.

"We couldn't allow the opening of a corridor of smuggling arms and terrorists," said Ayalon.

The deputy foreign minister told reporters that Israel does not want to fight with any country, but that the incident on the Gaza flotilla is not yet over.

“Defining deviancy down” is a commonly known phrase coined by the late New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. 2nd Danish Drug Firm Splits Greece

BBC:

Another Danish pharmaceutical company is withdrawing products from Greece in protest at the government's decision to cut the prices of medicines by 25%.

The Leo Pharma company says it is suspending sales of two popular drugs because the price reductions will cause job losses across Europe.

The Greek government is struggling with a debt crisis.

It has condemned as unfair the action of Leo Pharma, and another Danish company, Novo Nordisk.

The decision by Leo Pharma to suspend distribution of an anti blood-clotting agent and a remedy for psoriasis takes Greece one step closer towards an all-out boycott by medical suppliers.

Kristian Hart Hansen, a senior director of the company, said the 25% price reduction would encourage similar moves in other countries with large debt problems such as Ireland and Italy.

He warned that unless the company took action, there would job losses across Europe, including Denmark where the company is based.

Earlier this week another Danish company, Novo Nordisk, withdrew sales of its state-of-the-art insulin product from Greece for the same reason.

A MOST DEGRADING FLOTILLA

Some Islamists and their sympathisers from overseas want to conduct a flotilla trek to Gaza as a show of solidarity for jihadists and as an expression of anti-Israelism. The IDF has been trying to prevent this, and with good reason, because what if they were smuggling arms?

Anyway, in current news about this, the participants have been mouthing off with hate chants:

Witnesses reported Sunday morning that they had heard hate chants from those on board a flotilla of ships heading from Cyprus to Gaza. The ships bear hundreds of foreign activists who plan to challenge Israel's control of the sea off Gaza's coast.

The chants, which were recorded, included, “Khaybar Khaybar ya yahud, jaish Mohammed saya'ud.” The cry means, “Jews, remember Khaybar, the army of Mohammed is returning.” The reference is to the seventh century, when Mohammed, revered by Muslims as a prophet, led an army that slaughtered Jews in the town of Khaybar in what is now Saudi Arabia.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon condemned the chants. “The fact that participants on the flotilla would chant such things shows the true nature of some of the participants and its true motivation,” he said.

"This amply demonstrates that many are not against a particular policy of the Israeli government, but have very real and dangerous hatred for Jews and the Jewish state,” he added.

I would add that any parents who don't want their children to grow up be like these characters would do well to teach them not to involve themselves in politics. And to make sure that the schools they send them to don't encourage them either.

Novo Nordisk, a Danish company, objects to a government decree ordering a 25% price cut in all medicines.

More than 50,000 Greeks with diabetes use Novo Nordisk's product, which is injected via an easy-to-use fountain pen-like device.

A spokesman for the Danish pharmaceutical company said it was withdrawing the product from the Greek market because the price cut would force its business in Greece to run at a loss.

The company was also concerned that the compulsory 25% reduction would have a knock-on effect because other countries use Greece as a key reference point for setting drug prices.

Greece wants to slash its enormous medical bill as part of its effort to reduce the country's crippling debt.

Thousands of people from around the country descended on the Phoenix area Saturday as supporters and opponents of Arizona's tough new crackdown on illegal immigration held separate rallies.

Marchers carrying signs, banners and flags from the United States and Mexico filled a 5 mile stretch of central Phoenix, demanding that the federal government refuse to cooperate with Arizona authorities trying to enforce the law.

Police declined to estimate the size of the crowd, but it appeared at least 10,000 to 20,000 protesters braved 94-degree heat. Organizers had said they expected the demonstration to bring as many as 50,000 people.

Existing technology can produce biodiesel fuel from municipal sewage sludge that is within a few cents a gallon of being competitive with conventional diesel refined from petroleum, according to an article in ACS' Energy & Fuels, a bi-monthly journal.

Sludge is the solid material left behind from the treatment of sewage at wastewater treatment plants.

David M. Kargbo points out in the article that demand for biodiesel has led to the search for cost-effective biodiesel feedstocks, or raw materials. Soybeans, sunflower seeds and other food crops have been used as raw materials but are expensive.

Sewage sludge is an attractive alternative feedstock - the United States alone produces about seven million tons of it each year.

Sludge is a good source of raw materials for biodiesel. To boost biodiesel production, sewage treatment plants could use microorganisms that produce higher amounts of oil, Kargbo says. That step alone could increase biodiesel production to the 10 billion gallon mark, which is more than triple the nation's current biodiesel production capacity, the report indicates.

Nearly 200 nations, signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), have agreed to work towards a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East.

US President Barack Obama backed the deal but said he was "strongly opposed" to Israel being singled out.

The US says the reference could jeopardise efforts to persuade the Israelis to attend the 2012 talks.

An Israel official later denounced the document as "hypocrisy".

"Only Israel is mentioned, while the text is silent about other countries like India, Pakistan and North Korea, which have nuclear arms, or even more seriously, Iran, which is seeking to obtain them," a senior government official told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity.

BUSTED!!! - Sestak Was Not Eligible for Job Clinton Supposedly Offered

In a little-noticed passage Friday, the New York Times reported that Rep. Joe Sestak was not eligible for a place on the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, the job he was reportedly offered by former President Bill Clinton. And indeed a look at the Board’s website reveals this restriction:

The Board consists of not more than 16 members appointed by the President from among individuals who are not employed by the Federal Government. Members are distinguished citizens selected from the national security, political, academic, and private sectors.

As a sitting member of Congress, Sestak was not eligible for the job. And since the White House intended for Sestak to remain in his House seat, he would not have been eligible for the board after this November’s elections, provided he was re-elected to the House.

The statement from White House counsel Robert Bauer did not specifically mention the intelligence board, but speaking to reporters Friday, Sestak said of his conversation with Clinton, “At the time, I heard the words ‘presidential board,’ and that’s all I heard…I heard ‘presidential board,’ and I think it was intel.” In addition, the Times reported that “people briefed on the matter said one option was an appointment” to the intelligence board. But the White House could not legally have placed Sestak on the board.

Did the White House not know that? The apparent contradiction is sure to create more questions from Republicans who want an independent investigation of the affair. Why would the White House — normally pretty careful in such matters — offer Sestak a job he couldn’t take.

Obama is up the proverbial creek.

“I found the statement from the White House just unbelievably lawyerly, and I must say, deceptive.”

CAMERON TO END LABOUR'S OPEN DOOR/MULTI-CULTURALIST/ANTI-WEST IMMIGRATION POLICIES

The Left in Britain and elsewhere in the West has long been on an organized campaign to demolish the West. One tool they used was immigration: encouraging non-western immigrants to flood into the West. The left put them on welfare and then expected them to support the Party Line.

The huge increases in migrants over the last decade were partly due to a politically motivated attempt by ministers to radically change the country and "rub the Right's nose in diversity", according to Andrew Neather, a former adviser to Tony Blair, Jack Straw and David Blunkett.

He said Labour's relaxation of controls was a deliberate plan to "open up the UK to mass migration" but that ministers were nervous and reluctant to discuss such a move publicly for fear it would alienate its "core working class vote".

As a result, the public argument for immigration concentrated instead on the economic benefits and need for more migrants.

Critics said the revelations showed a "conspiracy" within Government to impose mass immigration for "cynical" political reasons.

Mr Neather was a speech writer who worked in Downing Street for Tony Blair and in the Home Office for Jack Straw and David Blunkett, in the early 2000s.

Writing in the Evening Standard, he revealed the "major shift" in immigration policy came after the publication of a policy paper from the Performance and Innovation Unit, a Downing Street think tank based in the Cabinet Office, in 2001.

He wrote a major speech for Barbara Roche, the then immigration minister, in 2000, which was largely based on drafts of the report.

He said the final published version of the report promoted the labour market case for immigration but unpublished versions contained additional reasons, he said.

He wrote: "Earlier drafts I saw also included a driving political purpose: that mass immigration was the way that the Government was going to make the UK truly multicultural.

"I remember coming away from some discussions with the clear sense that the policy was intended – even if this wasn't its main purpose – to rub the Right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date."

The "deliberate policy", from late 2000 until "at least February last year", when the new points based system was introduced, was to open up the UK to mass migration, he said.

Some 2.3 million migrants have been added to the population since then, according to Whitehall estimates quietly slipped out last month.

PM Cameron is going to stop this in Britain:

A RECORD 417,000 immigrants were given the right to live in Britain permanently last year, figures showed yesterday.

Of those, 203,000 were handed a British passport and full citizenship in 2009 – around one person every three minutes.

The number rocketed from 129,375 – a 58 per cent rise – in just a year.

On the rise … migrant numbers soared under Labour

Another 214,000 were given the right to settle in the UK – the first step to full citizenship.

This figure soared by 40 per cent over the 12 months.

The Home Office figures showed 29 per cent of those given a passport last year were from India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. Another 27 per cent came from Africa and 17 per cent from Asia, including China and the Philippines.

Last year’s total was the highest since the figures were first published in 1962.

...Damian Green … ‘migration system was out of control for so long under Labour’

Immigration minister Damian Green said the dramatic increases exposed the timebomb left by former Labour PM Gordon Brown and his party’s failed policies.

Mr Green said: “What is significant is that grants of settlement, the right to remain in this country, and grants of British citizenship have gone up hugely to record levels.

“So it shows the long-term effect of the fact that the immigration system was out of control for so long under the previous government.

“I believe immigration has been far too high in recent years, which is why we will reduce net migration back down to the levels of the 1990s – to tens of thousands rather than hundreds of thousands.”

...David Cameron has vowed to cut this figure to “tens of thousands” by imposing a cap on immigrants from outside the EU.

And Mr Green promised new limits on work permits and a crackdown on marriage and foreign students. Campaign group Migrationwatch said the citizenship and rights of settlement increases were worrying.

I hope it's not too late for Britain. To be effective, hey'll probably need to deport many immigrants, too.

Immigration is good - when managed properly: immigrants should be expected to assimilate. Or they shouldn't be allowed to stasy.
