AP/ NYTIMES: 7 Dead, 16 Injured in 2 Venezuela Prison Brawls

Venezuelan authorities say seven inmates have died and at least 16 more have been injured during fights inside two prisons in the western part of the country.

Officials tell the Globovision news channel that a clash Tuesday at a prison in San Felipe has left six dead.

Media reports say that jail about 310 miles (500 kilometers) west of Caracas has been tense since Sunday, when one group of inmates vying for control of the prison killed a leader of a rival group.
Authorities say another prisoner is dead and 16 are being treated for burns after violence broke out in a prison in the western town of Cabimas.
