SPRING SNOW STORMS CAUSES HAVOC IN EUROPE

THE NETHERLANDS: Snow causes traffic chaos in Netherlands
Departing flights at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam were delayed due to continuing snow in the Netherlands, it was reported.

The number of departing flights was reduced from 60 to 45 per hour.

Train traffic was also affected by the snow. All train traffic to and from Rotterdam was suspended on Tuesday.

The second day of snowfall this winter season caused problems on the train tracks, a spokesman for the Dutch railways NS said.

Trains in the east of the country, between Zutphen and Winterswijk, were also suspended until the problems are solved. NS said the tracks were currently too slippery to be used.

In the night between Monday to Tuesday, 37 road accidents took place due to slippery roads, a spokesman for the Dutch police said.

A warning by the Dutch ministry of road infrastructure, traffic and waterways to stay home as much as possible did not prevent problems on the roads.

By 7 am several Dutch highways had already been closed down entirely or partially following accidents caused by the snow. By 8 am the total length of traffic jams amounted to 760 kilometres -almost seven times the daily average.
AUSTRIA:
One person was killed and about 30 injured when a snowstorm provoked a huge pile-up involving up to 100 vehicles on a motorway in Austria.

The accident, which happened in the middle of this morning on the Seelwachen-St Georgen stretch of the Vienna-Salzburg A1 autobahn, left numerous motorists trapped inside their cars, the Austrian motoring club said. Up to 14 people were seriously injured in the pile-up, according to the Red Cross in the region.

Local hospitals were put on stand-by to deal with the casualties.

Around 40 Red Cross rescue vehicles have been sent to the scene, where they are working alongside the emergency services.

Police said low visibility due to the snowstorm was to blame for the crash, and the Austrian motoring association OeAMTC said that up to 100 cars and lorries were involved.

One of the association's helicopters was at the scene this afternoon, but other helicopters had to abort their attempts to join the rescue mission because of continuing heavy snowfall.
