The character he plays in the movie, George Bailey, is facing the worst crisis of his life, and actually tries to commit suicide, but is saved by his Guardian Angel - Clarence Oddbody. While explaining how awful his life has become to the Angel, he blurts out, "Perhaps everyone would've been better off if I'd never been born!" Clarence grants him his wish, and George gets to see what the world would've been like had he never been born. It's not a pretty picture: All the people he loved are suffering; all the values they lived for demeaned, devalued, degraded...The angel tells him, "You see George, each man's life touches so many others, so when isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?"
Finally convinced, George accepts his own fate; he doesn't care what happens to him, just take him back home; he wants to live again.
His second wish is granted. He returns to life, to his crisis and he finds that all the people whose lives he touched are there for him, too.

America is like George Bailey. Without us, there'd be a terrible hole in the world.
We've paid a high price for our liberty - and for the prosperity which that liberty creates.
We've paid a high price to help our fellow humans gain their liberty, too.
And we've paid a high price to maintain the security and protect that liberty.
Sometimes it seems that the price is too high.
But not a single part of the world which is wonderful would be wonderful without these sacrifices.
And that, and not the erratic ebb and flow of popularity, is the true value of what we stand for and what we've sacrificed, and what we are sacrificing today all over the world.
Whether they're ever there for us - or not.
