"Neither the president nor anyone in the White House denied any requests for assistance in Benghazi," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told Yahoo News by email. 

Fox News Channel reported Friday that American officials in the compound repeatedly asked for military help during the assault but were rebuffed by CIA higher-ups. At a press briefing one day earlier, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, asked why there had not been a quicker, more forceful response to the assault, complained of "Monday-morning quarterbacking." Panetta said he and top military commanders had judged it too dangerous to send troops to the eastern Libyan city without a clearer picture of events on the ground. 

The "basic principle is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on; without having some real-time information about what's taking place," he said during a joint question-and-answer session with Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff General Martin Dempsey. 

"As a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, General Ham, General Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation," Panetta said. 

General Carter Ham commands the U.S. Africa Command. 

And the CIA has denied that anyone in its chain of command rejected requests for help from the besieged Americans. 

But Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol, in a post published Friday, doubted Panetta's explanation and said the fault must lie with Obama himself. 

"Would the secretary of defense make such a decision on his own? No," Kristol wrote. "It would have been a presidential decision." 

"He's wrong," said Vietor.

Study: Federal Government Spent $61,194 On Welfare Programs For Each Household In Poverty

From Weekly Standard:

New data compiled by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee shows that, last year, the United States spent over $60,000 to support welfare programs per each household that is in poverty. The calculations are based on data from the Census, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Congressional Research Services. 

“According to the Census’s American Community Survey, the number of households with incomes below the poverty line in 2011 was 16,807,795,” the Senate Budget Committee notes. “If you divide total federal and state spending by the number of households with incomes below the poverty line, the average spending per household in poverty was $61,194 in 2011.” 

This dollar figure is almost three times the amount the average household on poverty lives on per year. 

“If the spending on these programs were converted into cash, and distributed exclusively to the nation’s households below the poverty line, this cash amount would be over 2.5 times the federal poverty threshold for a family of four, which in 2011 was $22,350 (see table in this link),” the Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee note.

An ideal merging of forces is now taking place between two parties in the Knesset:

In a surprise move that caught even Knesset members from their own parties unawares, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman agreed that their respective Knesset factions, Likud and Yisrael Beytenu, will form a new right-wing super-faction to contest January’s general elections.

Netanyahu and Liberman formally announced the partnership to the media at Jerusalem’s Dan Panorama Hotel at 8:00 p.m.

“The merger initiative brings us much closer to victory in the elections,” Netanyahu was quoted by Channel 10 News as saying. “It will [also] greatly increase the Israeli prime minister’s ability to govern. In effect, the changing of [Israel’s] system of government begins today.” [...]

Liberman served as the director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office during Netanyahu’s first term as prime minister in the late 1990s, but then set out on his own to form Yisrael Beytenu, a party with particular appeal to voters from the former Soviet Union. Himself an immigrant from Moldova in the late 1970s, Lieberman lives in the West Bank settlement of Nokdim and has charted a political course a little to the right of Netanyahu’s Likud in recent years.

“This move will sharpen the differences between right and left, and it will boost our capacity to govern, and to grapple with the challenges facing Israel,” the Likud’s Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar said Thursday evening, welcoming the news and pledging to support the partnership. Sa’ar clarified that the parties were not merging but, rather, would run together on a joint list for the January 22 elections. “Rather than forming a coalition partnership after the elections,” he said, the parties were “forming an alliance before the elections.”

Such unity, he said, was “good for the State of Israel.”

I'd say they're right, and it symbolizes the importance of unity.

UN PROMOTES BOYCOTTS OF US PRODUCTS BECAUSE THEY SUPPORT ISRAEL

Richard Falk, the pro-PLO official in the UN who's also a 9-11 Truther, is now calling for a boycott of USA businesses that support Israel:

Richard Falk, The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied Since 1967, called on the UN General Assembly and civil society to take reprisal action in the form of boycotts against U.S. and other international businesses that are profiting from Israeli settlements. He made this recommendation in delivering a summary of his report on October 25th to the General Assembly’s Third Committee.

Falk called on civil society organizations “to vigorously pursue initiatives to boycott, divest and sanction the businesses highlighted in this report.”

The companies Falk targeted for a concerted boycott include two U.S. companies – Caterpillar Incorporated and Motorola.

“All Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have been established in clear violation of international law,” Falk charged.

Falk argued that any businesses complicit in breaches of international humanitarian law – which he routinely accuses Israel of violating – “may be subject to criminal or civil liability. And this liability can be extended to individual employees of such businesses.”

Falk’s anti-Israeli bias drips from virtually every word he utters. His latest report contained page after page of denunciations of Israel without mentioning even once continuing Palestinian acts of terrorism or blatant Palestinian violations of international human rights law, such as using civilian human shields and placing lethal weapons in mosques, hospitals and other locations frequented by civilians in Gaza.

I think it's the UN that needs to be boycotted - none of these businesses should be selling their products to the UN management if this is how Falk and other like him in that grotto of political filth are going to act. No sensible person's tax figures should foot the bill for the UN anymore.

Update: Canada's joined Israel in calling for Falk's removal from his post. And he most definitely should be.

EHUD OLMERT SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO RUN FOR KNESSET AGAIN

It's not clear whether this corrupt former PM is going to run again for real, but MK Tzipi Hotovely is seeking to bar his return to the Knesset:

Likud Party lawmaker Tzipi Hotovely reportedly petitioned Israel's Central Elections Committee to prevent former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert from running for office.

Israel’s Army Radio reported that Hotovely asked committee chair Elyakim Rubinstein, a Supreme Court justice and former attorney general, to disqualify Olmert, the former leader of the centrist Kadima Party, from contending in the upcoming elections because of his conviction in July for breach of trust during a stint as minister of trade and industry. [...]

“It is inconceivable that Olmert be allowed to run for office in this situation, as elections are meant to increase the public’s trust in the political system, not diminish it,” Army Radio quoted Hotovely as saying in explaining her request.

The state attorney's office has already said they'll be appealing the lenient verdict the court gave Olmert. Based on this, that's one more reason why he shouldn't be allowed to run, since there's a legitimate case being made against him, and he shouldn't have immunity from it.

HOW IS IT "IMMODEST" FOR A WOMAN TO BE IN POLITICS?

Rabbi Shlomo Aviner may not be Haredi per se, but he's made some pretty dumb arguments of his own on how women should manage their business, such as this new little annoyance he's caused, claiming it's not fit for women to take part in elections:

Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, a leading figure in the national-religious community, said in conversation with his students this week that women should not stand for election to the Knesset.

“It is forbidden for a woman to serve as member of Knesset, it’s not modest,” the rabbi said. “Public exposure contradicts the Jewish principle that ‘all the glory of the daughter of a king is internal,’” Aviner added in comments first published on the Kipa website.

The rabbi subsequently stated in a letter to Likud MK Tzipi Hotovely that his comments were taken out of context.

“For sure, the Torah ideal is that women should not be involved in politics, but clearly, if there will be women in the Knesset anyway, then certainly one should vote for those women that will bring the most blessing to the nation,” wrote Aviner.

Since Hotovely’s Likud party has places on its electoral list reserved for women, her political activities are to be praised, he concluded.

So he's trying to backpedal now, is that it? Whatever point he was trying to make is a very poor, outmoded one, going along the lines that it's wrong to listen to a woman speak, even on subjects that aren't related to religious prayer services, and he's taken some flak even from other rabbis:

Opposition to the rabbi’s comments came from several quarters, including Rabbi Yuval Cherlow, another prominent national-religious leader.

“I don’t understand where this perspective came from, that a woman serving in a public office is not modest,” Cherlow said on Galei Yisrael radio station on Wednesday, adding as an aside that it is also incumbent on men to behave in a modest way in positions of public service.

“How is it possible to say that by definition a woman working in a public position is doing something immodest?” he added, saying that from his perspective women should be encouraged to participate in the political life of the country in order that their voices are heard.

The Hiddush religious freedom lobbying group also weighed in, describing Aviner’s stance as anachronistic and part of a “worrying phenomenon.”

One renowned female Jewish leader is Deborah the Prophet, a leader in the biblical era of the Judges.

Aviner said that the political involvement during biblical times of Deborah the prophet came about because there was no one else at the time who could take the leadership role.

Oh, that's hilarious! She lived at a time when there were plenty of other judges of both sexes around, so it's not like she was the only one in those remote times. All Aviner's done is add himself to the list of rabbis making awkward and downright embarrassing statements that aren't doing many favors for the reputation of theology, just like rabbi Ovadia Yosef did a few months ago.

What this tells is that the rabbinical movement in this country has some serious improvements to make in how to coincide better with the modern world.
