"WASH POST: CIA idles drone flights from base in Pakistan"

The CIA three months ago suspended its long-standing use of an air base in Pakistan as a launch site for armed drones targeting members of al-Qaeda and other militant groups, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials.

U.S. personnel and Predator drones remain at the facility, in the southwestern province of Baluchistan, with security provided by the Pakistani military, officials from both countries said. In recent days, Pakistan has publicly declared that it “ended” all U.S. flights from the base in the wake of the secret U.S. commando raid that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May.

But U.S. and Pakistani officials said the aircraft launches were halted in April, weeks before the bin Laden raid, after a dispute over a CIA contractor who fatally shot two Pakistani citizens in Lahore in January. An American official said the CIA’s decision to suspend the launches was part of a U.S. effort to “pay attention to the sensitivities” of the Pakistanis, who had objected to a claim of diplomatic immunity for the contractor.

Although Pakistan has continued to voice sharp public criticism over the shootings and the bin Laden raid, officials from both countries said the rupture in their intelligence cooperation has slowly begun to heal. Pakistan has reversed its freeze on visas for U.S. intelligence officials, they said, and allowed dozens of CIA personnel to reenter the country.

OBAMA IS EITHER DOING HIS BEST TO MAKE SURE WE LOSE, OR HE IS SIMPLY NOT UP TO THE TASK AT HAND - WITH NEITHER THE COURAGE OR RESOLVE TO DO WHAT MUST BE DONE.

ZOA asks Delta to end its relations with Saudi Arabia

The ZOA has confronted Delta Airlines over kowtowing to Saudi discrimination:

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) on Wednesday asked Delta Air Lines to end its new 'Sky Team' alliance with Saudi Arabian Airlines, saying it would lead to discriminatory practices against Jewish travelers.

The request was made in writing to Delta CEO Richard H Anderson after his company effectively washed its hands of any responsibility for discrimination its Sky Team partners may engage in.

"We write on behalf of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), the oldest and one of the largest pro-Israel organizations in the US, regarding Delta Air Lines’ decision to add Saudi Arabian Airlines to its SkyTeam in 2012," The letter began.

The ZOA letter then outlined Delta's and Saudi Arabian Airlines' respective policies, noting the official website of the Saudi Supreme Commission of Toursim "reflected that it was the policy of the Saudi Arabian government to deny visas to, among others, (1) anyone holding an Israeli passport or holding a passport with an Israeli arrival or departure stamp; and (2) 'Jewish People.'"

A US State Department report on Saudi Arabia was also referenced in the letter.

"According to the State Department, women visitors must be met by an authorized sponsor upon arriving in Saudi Arabia. A married woman must have her husband’s permission to leave Saudi Arabia – even if she is a US citizen and even if her husband does not have Saudi nationality. In addition, homosexuals are not welcome in Saudi Arabia. They have been imprisoned and even executed in Saudi Arabia," the ZOA wrote.

The ZOA, citing these facts, then asked Anderson to terminate Delta's agreement with Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Delta issued an official statement on Wednesday saying that it does not support discriminatory policies based on race, religion, gender, nationality, or age.

Sorry, but as long as they ally themselves with the Saudis and tolerate their discrimination, no sale.

The airline also explained the terms of its agreement with the Saudi carrier are limited to booking services and "simply allow passengers to book tickets on multiple carriers."

While acknowledging Delta's explanation of the terms, the Zionist Organization of America, in its letter, "urge(s) Delta to retract its decision to add Saudi Arabian Airlines to its SkyTeam because, quite simply, it is the moral, ethical and right thing to do."

Saudi Arabian carriers regularly enact their country's discriminatory policies against Jews, other non-Muslims, and women.

Unless Delta can prove they're able to drop this sick alliance, their business is one worth boycotting and saving money on.

The sighting of a gray whale off the coast of Israel ... on May 8, 2010, spotted off the coast of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea, according to San Diego’s CBS affiliate.

“We actually think it belongs to what’s known as the California population of gray whales and that it’s actually a stray,” said Dr. David Weller of the NOAA Southwest Fisheries.

Scientists believe the Mediterranean sighting may signal a change in migration for the species. Grey whales have not been spotted in the Atlantic since the 18th Century when they became extinct there for unknown reasons.

“We may see a reoccupation of the Atlantic by species that haven’t been there in quite some time,” Dr. Weller said.

OBAMA AND HOLDER DROP CHARGES IN 99 INTERROGATION CASES BUT CONTINUE WITH FULL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS IN 2 CASES IN WHICH DETAINEES DIED

A federal prosecutor has expanded his inquiry into harsh CIA interrogation practices during the Bush administration and is conducting a full criminal investigation into the deaths of two detainees, U.S. officials said Thursday.

At the same time, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Durham has concluded that no charges will be filed in the interrogations of 99 other detainees who were in U.S. custody after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said. At Holder’s request, Durham has been examining the actions of CIA interrogators and contractors at “black site” prisons for nearly two years.

Although officials would not identify the two detainees, sources said a Durham-led federal grand jury in Alexandria has been looking into the death of Manadel al-Jamadi, a suspected bomb-maker who died in November 2003 in Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison while in CIA custody . He had been beaten by Navy SEALS. One SEAL was charged in connection with his death but was acquitted.

Sources have said Durham is also closely examining the death of Gul Rahman, a young Afghan man who was beaten and chained to a concrete floor without blankets at a secret CIA facility north of Kabul. He died in November 2002 at a place known as the Salt Pit. A team of career federal prosecutors earlier declined to file charges in both cases, but Durham is looking at them anew.

JIHADIST SITE WAS OBLITERATED

A jihadist website was wiped out:

WASHINGTON (AP) - A popular jihadist Internet forum has been knocked off the Internet, and counterterrorism experts say it appears it was hacked.

Cybersecurity analysts say the al-Shamukh forum appears to have been taken down by a fairly sophisticated cyberattack that hit not only the website, but the server - which is the main computer that enables people to access the site over the Internet.

Evan Kohlmann, a counterterrorism expert who tracks jihadist websites as a senior partner with Flashpoint Partners consultancy in New York, described the site as a key al-Qaida propaganda forum.

He said it bounces around between Internet hosts every few months, but has seemingly been allowed to exist as an open secret, possibly allowing a Western government to use it as an intelligence resource.

"These sites can be like spy satellites, they're great ways of gathering information about your adversaries," he said in an interview late Wednesday. "Bringing them down is like shooting at your own spy satellites. But there are others who don't agree with that."

He said there's been a "struggle behind the scenes" in the U.S. government about whether to allow the site to stay up.

Other cyber experts agreed that the site is a popular jihadist forum.

"The al-Shamukh website had become the most trusted and exclusive haunt for e-jihadists," said Jarret Brachman, a terrorism expert who has spent a decade monitoring al-Qaida's media operations and advises the U.S. government. "If it doesn't come back up soon, the forum's registered members will start migrating to the half a dozen other main forums, all of whom are probably chomping at the bit to replace Shamukh as the pre-eminent al-Qaida forum."

The Defense Department said late Wednesday that it was aware of reports that al-Qaida's Internet operations had been disrupted, but could not comment on the specific incident.

Kohlmann raised the possibility that a government could be behind the website's problems.

If true, this would not be the first time that government officials have sabotaged an al-Qaida website.

U.S. and British officials have acknowledged that British intelligence authorities launched a cyberattack against al-Qaida's English-language Internet magazine, Inspire, taking down directions for bomb-making and replacing them with cupcake recipes.

U.S. authorities had considered knocking the magazine off the Internet but realized it would just go down for a few days, then reappear, according to one U.S. official. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said the U.S. believed it was more productive to keep an eye on the site and glean intelligence from it.

Kohlmann said chatter from another message board known to be frequented by al-Qaida members confirmed that there was a technical problem with the al-Shamukh forum website and that the outage wasn't intentional, such as performing site maintenance.

The fact that the forum wasn't knocked out sooner is revealing. Forcing a website offline can be a relatively easy matter. A so-called denial-of-service attack, which floods a website's servers with enormous amounts of webpage requests is a popular hacking activity. But it apparently wasn't used in this instance. Instead, cyber experts said it was a more complex attack.

Keynote Systems Inc., a San Mateo, Calif.-based company that specializes in measuring Internet and cellphone network response times, confirmed that the site was completely down from 14 cities around the world.

Based on the kind of error the site was giving people who tried to view the site, it is likely that someone stole the domain name and caused traffic to go to the wrong server, or that someone got access to the system and directed it to not return content, said Dan Berkowitz, spokesman for Keynote.

Kohlmann said it appears that the people who control the website were diligent about backing up the content, so it could be back online soon.

NBC News first reported the site was hacked Wednesday.

If the al Qaeda terrorists who were running the site are ready to load it again, that's why all concerned must be ready to stop them again.
