Suspicious man with al Qaeda literature arrested near Pentagon

From ABC News (via Michelle Malkin):

Police detained a man near the Sept. 11 memorial at the Pentagon this morning after he was reportedly found carrying a suspicious device and pro-al Qaeda literature, officials said.

The man appears to be a U.S. citizen of Ethiopian ethnicity. He would not make any admissions to the police.

The man’s backpack contained what officials believe is ammonium nitrate and spent 9mm shells as well as written material that contained statements including: “al qaeda taliban rules,” sources told ABC News.

One source told ABC News that they need final confirmation on whether it is ammonium nitrate and it’s not clear whether this was a workable device.

The suspect's been identified, and what do you know:

The man in custody for carrying a backpack with “suspicious items and products” inside Arlington National Cemetery overnight is a U.S. Marine Corps reservist, military and law enforcement sources tell Fox News.

Yonathan Melaku, a Lance Corporal Marine corps reservist who lives in Virginia and who is Muslim, has been identified as the suspect in custody, Fox News has learned.

There's just one quibble: if his name tells something, is he an Ethiopian with Jewish ancestry who converted to darkness? It's very scary to think about.

This will also have a knock-on unemployment multiplier effect on the people who pave roads to new subdivisions. It will require fewer realtors and settlement attorneys to handle the decreased sales volume. Home values will adjust downward in reaction to the penalty tax that a homeowner has to pay to escape a current residence. This will lead to a downward pressure on tax assessments for residential property which will further complicate the efforts of state and local governments to run organizations such as schools.

According to GOP.gov:

This new ObamaCare tax is the first time the government will apply a 3.8 percent tax on unearned income. This new tax on home sales and unearned income and other Medicare taxes raise taxes more than $210 billion to pay for ObamaCare. The National Association of Realtors called this new Medicare tax on unearned income “destructive” and “ill-advised” and warned it would hurt job creation.

Under the Obama administration, middle-class America is well on the way to serfdom!

SCARY GRAFFITI FOUND IN PLANE, YET TSA FAILS TO RESPOND PROPERLY

The New York Post (via The Blaze) reports on jihadist graffiti found in a plane flying from Newark, NJ:

Chilling graffiti found in the bathroom of a jet due to take off from Newark Airport was inexplicably erased by a cleaner after the Transportation Safety Administration waited 47 critical minutes to contact cops, Port Authority sources told The Post yesterday.

"By the beard of Mohamed and mighty sword of Allah," read the message found on a Continental Airlines jet Saturday night. It was scrawled in black ink, just above the mirror.

The message was discovered by a flight attendant who took a cellphone picture and notified the captain. He called his operations center, which notified the TSA.

Port Authority cops said they didn't hear from the TSA for 47 minutes. The TSA said it notified the PA "within a few short minutes."

The cleaner deserves a severe reprimand for tampering with evidence, just as the TSA does for their own incompetence. Atlas Shrugs is correct, the TSA has got to go.

POLL FINDS THERE'S MORE SUPPORT FOR JEWS LIVING IN JUDEA/SAMARIA

According to the poll, there's also less support for negotiations:

According to the results of a public opinion survey presented on Thursday at the 21st conference of Judea and Samaria Studies at the Ariel University Center of Samaria, about half of Israel’s citizens who are not residents of Judea and Samaria (47%) would not accept evacuations of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

The survey also found that 20% of Israel’s citizens are prepared to evacuate a few illegal communities, while only 12% of Israeli citizens are willing to evacuate a small number of communities in exchange for ending the conflict with the Arabs.

The number of those citizens who are prepared to evacuate a large number or all the communities in Judea and Samaria has gone down from 27% in 2010 to 14% today. Only 5% of Israelis are ready to evacuate all the communities and return to the 1949 armistice lines, found the survey.

The survey also found that most Israelis no longer believe in the political process. A large majority of those polled (64%) believes that Israel’s accepting the solution of “two states for two peoples” would do nothing to solve the Israeli-Arab conflict, or would only briefly prevent it from escalating.

There you have it. Many Israelis have woken up and recognized the taqqiya behind the PLO's motives, and even how concessions only make things more dangerous for Israelis and easier for jihadists. That's a show of understanding realism.

Britain Creating Parallel Islamic Financial System.

 "A British firm has launched a Sharia-compliant pension fund that will enable Muslims to save for retirement in compliance with Islamic principles.
The British government will begin offering Muslim workers Sharia-compliant pensions as of 2012. The launching of the funds, which are said to be structured around a strict code of ethics and based on the Muslim Koran and Islamic Sharia law (a religious code for living), reflects the gradual establishment of parallel Islamic financial and legal systems in British public life.
Pointon York, an independent financial services company based in Leicestershire in central England, announced on June 6 that it will begin offering four Sharia-compliant Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPP) products that do not bear interest nor invest in companies that trade in alcohol, gambling, pornography, tobacco or weapons, in conformity with Islamic law.

The growth of Islamic finance comes as other aspects of Sharia law are becoming enshrined in the British legal system. At least 85 Islamic Sharia courts are now operating in the country, almost 20 times as many as previously believed. A recent study by the London-based Civitas think tank titled "Sharia Law or 'One Law for All'?" found that scores of unofficial tribunals and councils regularly apply Islamic law to resolve domestic, marital and business disputes, many operating in mosques. It warns of a "creeping" acceptance of Sharia principles in British law.The study follows outcry over remarks by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who has argued that adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion in Britain. He also said: Sharia law in Britain is "unavoidable."

THIS INDIE BOOK SOUNDS TASTELESS

There's a new indie comic book coming out - a horror thriller, apparently - called "Graveyard of Empires" and it sounds like morally equivalent idiocy set in Afghanistan:

On sale now from Image Comics is Graveyard of Empires #1, the 32-page first chapter of a new limited series set against the war in Afghanistan. Created by Mark Sable (Unthinkable) and Paul Azaceta (Amazing Spider-Man, B.P.R.D.: 1946), the story is a prodigiously researched and unflinchingly violent depiction of what life is really like for American troops in this 10th year of war in Afghanistan, but with one critical difference: zombies, an undead threat that forces the Marines and the Taliban to work together to stop a common enemy.

What?!? I'm sorry, but I think there's a fine line to be drawn in the sand, and I wouldn't be surprised if the US army in real life would frown upon this premise. Especially the Navy Seals who conducted the successful raid on Osama bin Laden's hideout in Pakistan. Why, even the timing isn't good, coming several weeks after the Taliban tyrant was finished off and sent to hell.

The writer, Sable, said that:

Part of the reason Paul and I awe so passionate about this comic is that there is a real dearth of war comics, particularly those covering modern conflicts. That's surprising for a number reasons. One, comics has an amazing tradition of dealing with war, from Captain America to Blazing Combat and beyond. Because of how quickly and cheaply comics are produced, they can deal with war in real time, and bring an immediacy that no other fictional medium can.

The lack of modern war comics even more disturbing because we're in two (or more) wars right now. I suppose that reflects a broader cultural problem - so few are asked to sacrifice that moat of us don't feel the pain that war brings.

What's been nice about the reaction to the book so far is that there does seem to be a hunger for this type of book. Even the criticism so far has been from those who were expecting a straight war comic, rather than a military/horror conflict. Out of 32 pages in the first issue, only a couple deal with zombies.

His statement obscures a more challenging question - whether critics were turned off by the notion that the US military and the Taliban would work together against even a science-fiction enemy.

The following paragraph says:

The zombie element of Graveyard of Empires sneaks up on the reader in a startling fashion not unlike the way vampires suddenly appear in the middle of the film From Dusk 'Till Dawn. Prior to their arrival, Sable and Azaceta spend a great deal of time developing the grim setting and violent characters that populate both sides of the war. Among them, a new commanding officer whose hopes of endearing himself to his entrenched troops are slim-to-none; an opium-abusing Explosive Ordinance Disposal specialist, driven to drugs by the stress of dismantling bombs; a treacherous Afghan cop; a mutinous American sniper; a Female Engagement Officer whose job is to work with the grotesquely oppressed women of Afghanistan; and an Afghan surgeon forced by the Taliban to implant bombs inside of people. It's after we get these people that Sable lowers the zombie boom on them.

So let's see if I have this right: they acknowledge/allude to Afghanistan's Islamic shariah oppression of women (or do they?), but damage all that with ridiculous ideas like a drug-addicted bomb-disarmer, and a US sniper who's mutinous, which could mean he's willing to desert. And then Sable's own press comment continues with:

While there will be more horror in the next few issues, we don't plan on losing sight of the very real people on both sides of the conflict. As a plot device, zombies serve to do something that would otherwise be inconceivable - force US Marines and Taliban to cooperate against a common threat. Metaphorically, the zombies represent a force not unlike the Taliban. A foe with inscrutable motives that doesn't seem to need to eat or sleep, and no matter how many you kill...they just keep coming.

We hope the horror aspect will tempt readers who might not otherwise try a war book, while fans of military fiction will finally find the comic they've been waiting for.

Whether fans of horror thrillers would try a war book, I don't think fans of army fiction are going to appreciate the idea of the US army and the Taliban working together, no matter how bad those zombies are in comparison with the Taliban. Mainly because, as seen in that panel on the side, the zombie there appears to be spawned out of a dead US soldier. And even if there's some zombies turning up spawned from the stiffs of Taliban terrorists, it doesn't counteract the bad taste left by the idea of the good guys teaming up with the terrorists. Certainly not after the amazing victory achieved in the past month.

CAN YOU GUESS WHO THIS FUTURE PRESIDENT IS?

Nader, Paul, Huntsman and Palin ... they could tip it for Obama.

Just as a third party candidate did in NY26.

Too make it worse, perhaps Obama dunps Biden - from the itsybitsyteenyweeny state od Delaware and picks Huntsman, Bill Nelson or Warner as veep - to appeal to the cemter and maybe grab/hold a big electoral vote state.

And then - to counter - Romney picks a RINO like Christie or Rudy even Daniels.

So... Paul runs. And MAYBE even Palin jumps in - or Bachmann.

Then I think Obama wins.

REP. PETER KING'S HEARINGS ON MUSLIM RADICALIZATION IN PRISONS

The Daily Caller writes about the committee hearing Rep. Peter King gave on Muslim recruitment in prisons, and the rebuttal he had to give to Rep. Laura Richardson who tried to term it as "racist", making her yet one more person who cannot distinguish between religion and race:

During King’s Wednesday hearing on “The Threat of Muslim-American Radicalization in U.S. Prisons,” Democratic committee member Rep. Laura Richardson alleged that the inquiry could “be deemed as racist and as discriminatory.”

King did not take kindly to the charge, telling the committee that political correctness has gotten in the way of safety.

“I disagree 100 percent with the gentlelady. She is entirely wrong,” King said. “The fact is this committee was set up to combat terrorism. It was set up after September 11. As the Gentleman Mr. [Lamar] Smith [R-TX] has testified, there are already procedures in place which follow gangs when they leave prison. We have protocols in place for that. Unfortunately because of too many instances of political correctness, we do not have protocols in place to follow those who were trained in jihad in the prisons. That is why this is unique.” [...]

“I would say to the gentlelady, your party had control of this committee for four years. Not one hearing at all on anything involving Skinheads, on Nazis, on the Ayran Nation, on white supremacists at all. Certainly this issue emerges when we start talking about Muslim radicalization. That is the purpose of this committee. We have a Judiciary Committee to deal with other issues in the prisons.”

Sad as it is, there may actually be some neo-nazis on the loose in the mid-south, like during the time of the murder of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian by a black gang in Tennessee, and some neo-nazis, clearly intent on undermining the effort to combat black-on-white violence, exploited the situation for hatemongering. I have no doubt they were actually trying to help the villains. Were villains like those neo-nazis ever the focus of the committee when the Democrats controlled it? If not, then we have to wonder if they really are concerned about even those monsters.

But aside from this, is Peter King going to be more respectable and responsible when it comes to inviting witnesses and experts, and not shun people like Steve Emerson and Ayaan Hirsi Ali who could have some vital info to offer? If he continues what he did last time he was running this committee, then he'll only be performing what he accuses the rivals of stooping to.

Labour: London borough becomes 'Islamic republic'

As one Bengali woman voter went past them, we heard one of the Rahman army scolding her for her “immodest dress.”

Scientists Concerned We May Enter an Ice Age

Scientists predict rare 'hibernation' of sunspots

WASHINGTON (AFP) – For years, scientists have been predicting the Sun would by around 2012 move into solar maximum, a period of intense flares and sunspot activity, but lately a curious calm has suggested quite the opposite.

According to three studies released in the United States on Tuesday, experts believe the familiar sunspot cycle may be shutting down and heading toward a pattern of inactivity unseen since the 17th century.

The signs include a missing jet stream, fading spots, and slower activity near the poles, said experts from the National Solar Observatory and Air Force Research Laboratory.

"This is highly unusual and unexpected," said Frank Hill, associate director of the NSO's Solar Synoptic Network, as the findings of the three studies were presented at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Physics Division in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

"But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation."

Solar activity tends to rise and fall every 11 years or so. The solar maximum and solar minimum each mark about half the interval of the magnetic pole reversal on the Sun, which happens every 22 years.

Hill said the current cycle, number 24, "may be the last normal one for some time and the next one, cycle 25, may not happen for some time.

"This is important because the solar cycle causes space weather which affects modern technology and may contribute to climate change," he told reporters.

Experts are now probing whether this period of inactivity could be a second Maunder Minimum, which was a 70-year period when hardly any sunspots were observed between 1645-1715, a period known as the "Little Ice Age."

"If we are right, this could be the last solar maximum we'll see for a few decades. That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth's climate," said Hill.

 Three things to note here:

1) This article implicitly admits that the Earth's "climate" is heavily influenced by solar activity. This is implicit in the assumptions of the article, because it is scientifically true.

2) The article suggests we could be entering a "little Ice Age". We here at the Astute Bloggers have been predicting this for several years.

3) In admitting that "climate change" is influenced by the sun, and admitting that scientists don't seem to have much of a handle on what the sun will do from one decade to the next, the article explicitly admits that scientists do not know what the climate is going to do from one decade to the next.

A Kuwaiti woman who is called an “activist” and former candidate to the Kuwaiti parliament, spoke to the Kuwait Times about the establishment of a new law permitting men to buy and sell non-Muslim girls, captured in jihad, as sexual slaves in order to protect Muslim men against seductive sexual immorality. The Arabic Al Arabiya had more details on what that woman, Salwa al-Mutairi, is advocating:

Ms. Mutairi who was nice enough to put the minimum age of 15 for slave girls, Christian Jews or other, to be sold. She demanded the immediate establishment of slave agencies just like agencies for maids, where the slave girls will earn a whopping 50 Kuwaiti Dinar monthly and in return will cook, clean, take care of the kids and be the slave of the wife during the day.
