A HOUSING landlord fears hundreds of its tenants could be hit with burst pipes and heating failures on Christmas Day.

The switchboards at Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership were bombarded with more than 1,000 concerned callers on Monday mainly related to the Arctic weather which is gripping the region.

IT has been the coldest start to a winter since records began more than 130 years ago.

The freeze in the first three weeks of the month means that, despite the thaw due from St Stephen's Day, this December will officially be the coldest on record, Met Eireann said.

New lows have been set across the country this month. Last Monday night in Co Mayo -17.2C was measured -- the coldest temperature ever recorded in Ireland during December.

But globally, things have rarely been so warm.

According to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, 2010 is set to be the third warmest year ever, while 2009 came in second place.

This has led many Irish people to ask an obvious question -- if global warming is really happening, why is there half a metre of snow on the ground?

One of the country's leading climatologists, John Sweeney, says the apparent contradiction results from confusing climate with weather.

Treasure Coast residents could be waking to a record-setting cold Tuesday — and to the second coldest December on record so far, according to National Weather Service records.

Only the first part of December 1957 was colder.

This December is averaging 68.3 degrees in the daytime and 43.7 at night: about 10 degrees cooler than average. And Tuesday’s predicted early morning low of 27 degrees could drop that even farther.

And it’s not even winter until Dec. 21.

Tuesday’s high is to rise to 53 degrees before plunging back down 30 degrees overnight.

“I’m apprehensive,” said Stan Carter, 71, who planned to be outside periodically throughout Monday night, checking on MacArthur Farms’ 450 acres of citrus in St. Lucie County.

The company flooded the groves with water to help keep temperatures up in the groves. Early Tuesday he will be out, with a filet knife, to see the outcome.

A crunching sound as he cuts into fruit means the fruit’s interior froze, greatly lessening its market value. The National Weather Service says bird baths could be frozen early Tuesday, but not ponds and lakes.

But tropical vegetation in yards is expected to be hard hit, according to Indian River County Agricultural Extension Director Christine Kelly. That includes poinsettias.

Also there could be more damage to vegetable crops along the Treasure Coast, officials said.

Only the barrier islands from Vero Beach south may be spared freezing because of the nearby warmer waters, according to the National Weather Service. However the wind chill through the Treasure Coast could make nighttime lows feel like they are in the teens or mid 20s.

ROCKET ATTACKS BY HAMAS RESUME

The Hamas has fired more rockets, leading the military to have to respond (via Jihad Watch):

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel carried out a series of air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Palestinian officials and witnesses said, after militants from the Hamas-ruled territory fired rockets into southern Israel.

No one was reported killed in any of the strikes that targeted a Hamas training camp, where two gunmen were wounded, as well as smuggling tunnels along Gaza's border with Egypt and other, unpopulated areas, Hamas officials and witnesses said.

An Israeli military spokesman said at least 14 rockets had been launched at Israel from the Gaza Strip in the past two days.

A rocket that later struck an Israeli farming community on the Mediterranean coast lightly wounded one person who was taken to hospital, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Media reports said the rocket landed near a kindergarten.

A spokesman for the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades militant group, an offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the latest rocket attack and said it was fired in retaliation for Israel's air strikes.

Hamas leaders have tried to curb rocket fire at Israel from Gaza, but smaller groups continue to carry out such attacks.

Israel's military said more than 200 cross-border missiles, rockets and mortars have been fired from Gaza this year.

Unsurprisingly, Reuters pretends the Hamas is really trying to prevent these attacks. But it's just a case of their lying in wait for when they consider the perfect moment to attack. Reuters also goes the PC route by using "militant" in place of "terrorist".

ASKING OBAMA TO RELEASE POLLARD WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT STRINGS ATTACHED

Prime minister Netanyahu has announced that he'll seek convicted spy Jonathan Pollard's release:

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will issue a public, formal, and official call in upcoming days for US President Barack Obama to release Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard, the Prime Minister's Office announced in a press release issued Tuesday.

Netanyahu will issue the call at the behest of Pollard, whose wife Esther delivered him a request from her husband at the Knesset on Monday.

"I intend to continue to act with determination to free Pollard, both because of the ethical obligation Israel has toward him and because Jonathan should have the right to live with his family and rehabilitate his health after so many years in jail,” Netanyahu said in the press release.

Sources close to Netanyahu said he had consulted with American officials and his advisers about whether issuing the formal call could be helpful or whether it would do more harm than good.

Here's the problem: Obama likely wouldn't do it, if at all, without huge concessions on Israel's part. And that's the really severe difficulty in getting Pollard released.

From the New York Times: U.S. Proposes Rules on Raising Insurance Premiums

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration said on Tuesday that it would require health insurance companies to disclose and justify any increases of 10 percent or more in the premiums they charge next year.

State or federal officials will review the increases to determine if they are unreasonable, the administration said in proposing regulations to enforce the requirement.

Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of Health and Human Services, said the review of premiums would “help rein in the kind of excessive and unreasonable rate increases that have made insurance unaffordable for so many families.”

The new health care law, signed in March by President Obama, calls for the annual review of “unreasonable increases in premiums for health insurance coverage.” The law did not define unreasonable.

Under the proposed rules, insurers seeking rate increases of 10 percent or more in the individual or small group market next year must publicly disclose the proposed increases and the justification for them.

“Such increases are not presumed unreasonable, but will be analyzed to determine whether they are unreasonable,” the administration said.

Starting in 2012, the federal government will set a separate threshold for each state, reflecting its cost trends, and insurers will have to disclose rate increases above that level.

Under the proposed regulation, the federal government will evaluate each state’s procedures for analyzing insurance rates.

ROME (AP) — An explosive device was found Tuesday in a subway car in Rome, Italian news agencies reported.

The ANSA and Apcom news agency said the device was found Tuesday inside a train during a stop in Rebibbia, on the outskirts of Rome.

ANSA cited a press release by the Atac company that runs the subway. Nobody was immediately available at Atac.

Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno said it was "worrying."

"Bomb disposal experts are looking into what it is — whether it's a dangerous device that was capable of exploding or an inactive object," Alemanno was quoted as saying by Apcom.

The area was cleared of people, according to the reports.

Apcom said the device had been left in a grocery bag underneath a seat, and was spotted by the conductor in the morning.

AMERICAN HIKER MURDERED NEAR BEIT SHEMESH

There's been a murder - very likely terrorist related - of an American born woman who was tour-hiking near Beit Shemesh. A British born friend of hers survived:

Police early Sunday morning found the body of Christine Logan, who held an American passport, 16 hours after two Arabs stabbed her and wounded a friend. Police have clamped a gag order on the murder, which authorities now believe was a terrorist attack. Earlier, they were equally suspicious that the attack was criminal, although they still have not ruled the possibility.

Logan and British immigrant Kaye Susan Wilson, a tour guide, hiked in a dry river bed near Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem, after Wilson had completed a tour with a group. Although Wilson's and Logan's names do not sound Jewish, their religion is not known. Wilson rents a home at the religious-secular Givat Ze'ev community, located west of Jerusalem on Highway 443. Logan's residence is not known at this time.

Wilson may have saved her own life by pretending she was dead until the attackers left the scene after stabbing her in her back and stomach. She told police that two Arabs had bound her hands and that after they left, she reached a nearby parking lot, where passersby called for an ambulance and police.

Wilson was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem, where she was treated for serious wounds and is in the ICU, but.her life is not in danger.

We have to hope the hunting party that's been formed to search for the murderers will find the monsters. The victim's friend is very lucky to be alive.

Recently, Brazil and Argentina granted such recognition, and Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath told reporters Saturday that he expects three more countries, including Uruguay, to follow suit.

He said he also expects three more European countries to upgrade Palestinian representation in coming weeks, after Norway took that step earlier this week. Spain, Portugal and France have already done so.

While they're at it, why don't they recognize the independent state of Chechnya, Catalonia, Basque, Turkish Kurdistan? [And so on...]

There is no such culture as Jordanian and no language called Jordanian and no history that can be call led "Jordanian" that predates this arbitrary act by Britain.

The Observer: Stockholm bomber’s mosque website carries links to banned preacher

The lies and taqqiya keep coming:

Preachers at the Luton Islamic Centre told last week how they had tackled Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, 28, the suicide bomber who blew himself up in Stockholm last weekend, over his extremist views. However, the centre’s website carries a link to a lecture by Dr Bilal Philips, a Muslim preacher who was barred from entering Britain by the home secretary in July because of his extremist views. Philips’s speech includes a passage during which he says that a person who kills him or herself is motivated by different instincts to those of a suicide bomber. “When you look at the mind of the suicide bomber, it’s a different intention altogether,” he says. Suicide is generally considered to be against Islamic law.
