GETTING RID OF "POST-ZIONISTS" IN SCHOOLS

The government has just dismissed a propagandist, part of a movement that was encouraging "post-Zionism" for nearly 2 decades:

A relatively unknown - to the public, that is - "culture basket" has been encouraging post-Zionism in the Israeli school system for 20 years -- until an expose led to the director’s dismissal last week.

The "culture basket'' is the list of speakers and enrichment workshops or performances in the fields of art, music, dance, drama, literature and sculpture that are subsidized or paid for entirely by the Education Ministry if invited to appear before students. The subsidy of performances from the 'basket''s approved list leads principals, who are financially limited, to choose enrichment from it. The concept of a "culture basket" is mostly unknown to the general public, but those in the educational system are well aware of it.

The Legal Forum for the Land of Israel said it discovered several months ago that Bruria Beker, director of the “national cultural basket" for the past 22 years had been using government funds for education programs that included appearances in schools by a group billing itself as "The Bereaved Families Association." In fact, the group’s official title is “The Israeli -Palestinian Bereaved Families for Peace."

The parents gave lectures to 11th and 12th students who heard post-Zionist messages encouraging youth not to serve in the IDF. The organization, outside of school, cooperated with Arab anti Zionist civilians during the counterterrorist Operation Cast Lead campaign and met with wanted Arabs in order to 'promote tolerance and conciliation'.

Other groups have accused Beker of being the “commissar” of culture who prohibited certain performances in schools without setting out clear guidelines.

Education Minister Gideon Saar dismissed Beker after investigating the claims, and said a special inquiry would determine which groups are allowed to speak in schools.

Here's a suggestion: those groups should not include anyone promoting Islamism. We don't want children influenced into becoming jihadists and misogynists.

Among the pleasures of living in Southern California, none may be as wonderful as the climate, and the ability of residents to use it as a meteorological bat against the collective heads of their fellow Americans.
When there are snowstorms elsewhere, people here go tide pooling; when humidity soaks the East, Angelenos repose at 75 degrees.
Never had this chasm been more acute than during this unusually cool summer in Southern California, where people wrapped themselves in light sweaters as the rest of the nation tried to fry things on the sidewalks.

But then, it rained. That was not funny. Angelenos may like to be cruel with their cool, but it should not interrupt a barbecue.
Now, as the summer lurches toward August with barely a warm weekend to its name — to say nothing of the almost-unheard-of precipitation — people here are actually grumpy about their climes.
“I actually wish I were on the East Coast,” said Caitlin Pence, 24, who lives in Manhattan Beach, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. “It is so miserable here, I don’t really want to do anything. It’s like seriously, actually, genuinely depressing. I am a teacher, and so I have my whole summer off — and I’ve seen the sun probably two times the whole summer.”
The average temperature at Los Angeles International Airport in July so far has been 66.4 degrees, or 2.4 degrees below normal; on July 12, the airport hit a record with its lowest recorded maximum temperature of 68 degrees. (The previous low for the day was 70 degrees, in 1949.)
This followed an unusually cool June — generally the dreariest month in Los Angeles. Further, there have been traces of rain four days this month, which for Los Angeles is something akin to a frost in Miami in September.
“Two degrees below normal over a month may not sound like much,” said Claudia Cox, head of operations for the National Weather Service’s Western region. “But when you average up all 30 days, it is pretty unusually cold.”

Even as the new coalition government said it would make enormous cuts in the public sector, it initially promised to leave health care alone. But in one of its most surprising moves so far, it has done the opposite, proposing what would be the most radical reorganization of the National Health Service, as the system is called, since its inception in 1948.
Practical details of the plan are still sketchy. But its aim is clear: to shift control of England’s $160 billion annual health budget from a centralized bureaucracy to doctors at the local level. Under the plan, $100 billion to $125 billion a year would be meted out to general practitioners, who would use the money to buy services from hospitals and other health care providers.
The plan would also shrink the bureaucratic apparatus, in keeping with the government’s goal to effect $30 billion in “efficiency savings” in the health budget by 2014 and to reduce administrative costs by 45 percent. Tens of thousands of jobs would be lost because layers of bureaucracy would be abolished.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND 14,000 YEAR OLD PET DOG BONES

Archaeologists found in a Swiss cave, a jaw fragment belonging to an ancient dog. After radiocarbon-dating it they concluded that it is over 14,000 years old and that it might be the earliest dog ever known.

Establishing when the first fully-domesticated wolf became a dog is a rather sensitive subject among researchers, and some already say that fossils much older than the Swiss have already been discovered.

Scientists have different theories about how and when dogs originated, as one analysis of modern dogs and wolves concluded that the first domesticated wolf (the first dog) lived in Asia, another in Eastern Europe and a third in the Middle East.

Well, archeology graduate student Hannes Napierala and archaeologist-zoologist Hans-Peter Uerpmann, study coauthors at the University of Tübingen in Germany say that the upper-jaw discovered in 1873 in Kesslerloch Cave, near Switzerland’s northern border with Germany, proves that domestic dogs lived there between 14,100 and 14,600 years ago.

Napierala states: “The Kesslerloch find clearly supports the idea that the dog was an established domestic animal at that time in central Europe.”

BBC: Peru declares emergency over cold weather

The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in more than half the country due to cold weather.

Most of the areas affected are in the south, where temperatures regularly drop below zero centigrade at this time of year.

However, this time temperatures have dropped to as low as -24C.

The state of emergency means regional authorities can dip into emergency funds to provide medicine, blankets and shelter to those most affected.

The state of emergency was declared in 16 of Peru's 24 regions.

This week Peru's capital, Lima, recorded its lowest temperatures in 46 years at 8C, and the emergency measures apply to several of its outlying districts.

... In Peru's hot and humid Amazon region, temperatures dropped as low as 9C. The jungle region has recorded five cold spells this year. Hundreds of people - nearly half of them very young children - have died of cold-related diseases, such as pneumonia, in Peru's mountainous south where temperatures can plummet at night to -20C.

BBC: Turkey orders arrest of 102 over 'coup plot'

A Turkish court has ordered 102 people charged with plotting to overthrow the government to be arrested and held in jail until their trial, the state news agency says.

The suspects were among 196 people indicted this week. Some were detained in February and then released.

They include three retired military commanders. They are to be jailed pending their 16 December trial.

The remaining 94 will remain free until their trial.

All are accused of involvement in an alleged conspiracy to create chaos and pave the way for a military takeover.

Among the 102 people are retired Gen Dogan Cetin, former commander of Turkey's first army, former navy chief Adm Ozden Ornek and former air force commander Gen Halil Ibrahim Flirtina.

The indictment says the alleged conspiracy was drawn up in 2003 at the Istanbul base of the Turkish First Army shortly after the governing AKP party came to power.
