LSE REPORT: PAKISTAN'S ISI FUNDS, TRAINS AND HIDES TALIBAN

BBC:

A new report claims to provide the most concrete evidence yet of direct links between Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The report says the ISI is providing funding, training and sanctuary to the Taliban on a scale much larger than previously thought.

The document was prepared by the London School of Economics (LSE).

... The report's author spoke to nine Taliban field commanders in Afghanistan earlier this year.

He concludes that Pakistan's relationship with the insturgents runs far deeper than previously realised.

Some of those interviewed suggested that the ISI even attends meetings of the Taliban's supreme council. They claim that by backing the insurgents Pakistan's security service is trying to undermine Indian influence in Afghanistan.

The report concludes that without a significant change in approach by Pakistan, both the Afghan government and international community will find it impossible to end the insurgency in Afghanistan.

CHINESE REVEAL REMAINS OF BUDDHA

Chinese Buddhist monks and archaeologists revealed what they believed to be top part of the skull of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, Saturday morning in east China's Jiangsu Province.

... The parietal bone of Sakyamuni, allegedly recovered from the cremation ash of Sakyamuni, had been stored in a miniature pagoda named the Pagoda of King Asoka unearthed two years ago in an underground shrine built in 1011 under the former Changgan Temple of Nanjing.

The palace was found when archaeologists began excavating the ruins of the Grand Bao'en Temple of Nanjing built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD).

In July 2008, archaeologists found a stele in the palace, the inscription on it said the palace preserved a "Seven-Treasure Pagoda of King Asoka" containing gold and silver coffins with Sakyamuni's parietal bone and relics of other Buddhas inside.

One month later, an iron case containing a pagoda was unearthed from the palace. In November 2008, archaeologists removed the pagoda from the case and found two mini-coffins.

It is said that 2,500 years ago, Sakyamuni's disciples recovered one parietal bone, four teeth, two collar bones and 84,000 particles of relics from the cremation ash of Sakyamuni, according to Lu Jianfu, a senior official with the association.

Asoka, an Indian emperor (273 BC - 232 BC), allegedly collected all the parts of Sakyamuni's remains, stored them in pagoda-like shrines, and sent them to different parts of the world.

The pagoda in Nanjing is believed to be one of tens of thousands of "pagodas of King Asoka" that contain Sakyamuni's remains.

The four-layer, 1.21-m-high and 0.42-m-wide pagoda is allegedly the largest of its kind unearthed in China.

According to Tang Dynasty (618-907) Buddhist records, China had 19 pagodas of King Asoka holding Sakyamuni's relics. To date, it is believed seven of the pagodas have been found in different parts of the country.

From the Yeshiva World, we learn that four professors, 3 from Bar-Ilan U. and 1 from Georgetown U. have sent a letter to the prime minister's office asking them to do the right thing and recognize the Armenian Holocaust:

Signing the letter are Professors Yossi Katz, David Tzuriel, and Yaakov Katz, all from Bar Ilan and Dr. Ofir Yisraeli from Georgetown.

The academics feel that over the years, Israel has refrained from addressing the slaughter of Armenians during World War I and immediately thereafter, opting to place strategic ties with Turkey over doing the correct thing, but now, Israel can indeed adopt a morally commendable position towards compelling Turkey to accept responsibility for its actions.

I read in Yisrael HaYom's June 11, 2010 edition that for many years, the Israeli government actively sought to avoid "offending" Turkey, all for the sake of trade deals involving arms manufacturing and tourism. This includes not raising the subject as a school-based history lesson, and not only that, most bewildering enough, it seems that some even thought it would "belittle" the subject of the Jewish people's own tragedy during WW2! Excuse me? Where's the logic in that?

Kyrgyzstan erupting in violence - leader invites Russia to send troops to help retore calm

XINHUA:

The interim leader of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbayeva appealed to Russia on Saturday to send troops to help quell the violence in the southern part of the country.

The appeal was made in a letter sent to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Otunbayeva told reporters.

"Since yesterday evening the situation goes over the edge, we need the input of other military forces to appease the situation. In this concern, we appealed for help to Russia," said the interim leader.

"I have already signed such a letter for President Dmitry Medvedev," she added.

The death toll from clashes has risen to 49 and another 654 were wounded.

The unrest, erupted late Thursday, has prompted the interim government to declare a state of emergency in the city, which has also been put under a curfew from 8 p.m. (1400 GMT) to 6 a.m. (0000 GMT) until June 20.

Bloomberg reports:

Seven states will run out of money to pay public pensions by 2020. That hasn’t stopped them from hiring new employees.

The seven are Illinois, Connecticut, Indiana, New Jersey, Hawaii, Louisiana and Oklahoma, according to Joshua D. Rauh of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Combined, they added 9,700 workers to both state and local government payrolls between December 2007 and April of this year, says the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Friday he was "disappointed" that Turkey voted against imposing UN sanctions on Iran, but acknowledged allies sometimes disagree.

"I was disappointed by the Turkey vote on the Iranian sanctions," Gates told a news conference after a meeting of NATO defence ministers, including Turkey's representative.

"That said, Turkey is a decades long ally of the US and a member of NATO. Turkey continues to play a critical part in the alliance," he said.

Gates said Washington had "strong" defence ties with Ankara as well as military bases on Turkish territory.

"Allies don't always agree on things. But I think we move forward from here, and we'll just do that," he said.

Turkey, along with Brazil, voted against fresh sanctions against Iran, which the UN Security Council adopted on Wednesday.

Ankara argued that Tehran should be given a chance to carry out a nuclear fuel swap deal, brokered by Turkey and Brazil last month.

Gates on Wednesday blasted the European Union over its treatment of Turkey, saying the EU's reluctant stance towards possible Turkish membership was a factor behind Ankara's perceived foreign policy shift away from the West.

Senate Rejects Republican Effort to Thwart Carbon Limits

The Senate on Thursday defeated a Republican-led effort to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from curbing greenhouse gases as lawmakers road-tested arguments for a future fight over climate change legislation.

The Senate voted 53-47 to reject an attempt by Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, to block the E.P.A. from imposing new limits on carbon emissions based on its 2009 finding that such gases from industry, vehicles and other sources represent a threat to human health and the environment.

Ms. Murkowski and others, including six Democrats, contended that the E.P.A. was engaging in a bureaucratic power grab and usurping Congressional authority with regulations that would stifle the economy and kill jobs.

THIS AMOUNTS TO CARBON SEQUESTRATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.
