Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is catching hell from the Washington establishment for having the temerity to tell the truth about the fine print in the Obama-Dodd Wall Street reform bill. McConnell is raising alarms about the proposal’s provision to make Washington bailouts a permanent feature: “It’s almost as if the people who wrote this bill took the pulse of the American people and then put together a bill that endorses the very things they found most repugnant about the first bailout.”RTWT.
The Democrats have responded with a lot of jive. The bill’s chief sponsor, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., claims his proposal “will end bailouts.” The GOP leader is also being flailed by liberal journalists like Steven Pearlstein of the Washington Post, who during a recent WTOP interview accused McConnell of lying about the Dodd bill.
Apparently Dodd and Pearlstein haven’t talked to former Clinton administration Secretary of Labor Robert Reich who said of the Obama-Dodd measure that “yes, it preserves the possibility that the Fed could launch another bank bailout.” Or Tim Geithner, Obama’s own Treasury Secretary, who last October told the House Financial Services Committee that “a standing fund would create expectations that the government would step in to protect shareholders and creditors from losses.” Or Richmond Federal Reserve president Jeffrey Lacker who said Obama-Dodd bill “just perpetuates the dynamic that gave us ‘too big to fail’ to begin with.”
The key problem with Obama-Dodd is that it establishes a new $50 billion bailout fund that can be used by the Fed to regulate all non-bank financial institutions that, according to the bill, are “systematically important.” That phrase is exactly the kind of vague language that Washington politicians and bureaucrats believe authorizes them to do whatever they think necessary — typically with tax dollars — to prevent the failure of any company they define as “systematically important.” That’s a prescription for making bailouts permanent — and for limitless moral hazard.
One of the claimed dangers of a few degrees warming of the Earth is increasing drought. Drought is a very difficult thing to fight, because it is hard to manufacture water. So this is a frightening possibility.
... One of the things that AGW supporters have been saying would result from warming is that the desert belts would move poleward. These are the great belts that circle the earth at about 30° North and 30° South latitude. The North American belt encompasses the Southwestern US (Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) and Northern Mexico. If these belts were actually moving poleward as the globe warmed over the last century, we should see decreased precipitation in the Southwestern US.Instead, all of the southwestern states have increased rainfall. The man area with decreased rainfall encompasses the Rocky Mountain states in the central Northwestern US.
My conclusions? Precipitation is indeed spotty. A warmer US is indeed a wetter US. And there is no decrease in the Southwestern US data which would show that the great northern desert belt is moving polewards.

Monotonous voices are associated with strength, power and confidence, researchers said.HMMM: OBAMA HAD A MORE MONOTONOUS VOICE THAN MCCAIN...
The study at universities in California and Pennysylvania, US, found that men with a steady tone of voice had a significantly higher number of sexual partners than their more expressive counterparts.
Researchers measured the voices of male volunteers in various situations, including a simulated dating game, and analysed the results.
The amount their vocal pitch changed – known as fundamental frequency variation – was found to be directly linked to the number of sexual partners the men had in the past year.
Experts believe that the monotone has evolved as an indication of authority and independence. They cited George Clooney and Clint Eastwood as examples of men who have nonotone voice but are considered sexy.
The constant frequency of a monotonous voice shows a man is in control, while anxiety triggers a rise in vocal frequency and aggression causes it to deepen.
Professor David Puts, who led the research at Pennsylvania State University, said: “The power would be attractive, not the voice as such. “It appears that the women are preferring males who are higher in status. It would be the status they would be most interested in.”

Harvesters are scouring forest floors in the Philippines, where civet coffee has emerged as a new business.
In Indonesia, where the coffee has a long history, enterprising individuals are capturing civets and setting up minifarms, often in their backyards.

THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA!:"Terrorism must be defeated through the deliberate 'toxification' of the al-Qaeda brand; not by making it seem dangerous, but by exposing it as dumb," Jamie Bartlett, one of the report's authors, told AFP.
"Al-Qaeda has to be ridiculed as the equivalent of a middle-aged dad at a school disco: enthusiastic, incompetent and excruciatingly uncool."
Bartlett, together with Jonathan Birdwell and Michael King, published "The edge of violence, a radical approach of extremism" on the website of the London-based think tank Demos on Friday.
The report summarised two years of work in Britain, Canada, Denmark, France and the Netherlands, which included interviews with 58 people convicted of terror-related offences and with 20 radical, but non-violent Muslims.
Researchers also interviewed 70 Muslims in Canada and 75 local and national experts.
