France agrees warship sale to Russia

France has agreed to sell a Mistral class warship to Russia, a French official said on Monday, despite concerns expressed by Georgia and other countries.

Russia wanted to buy the 21,300-tonne helicopter carrier from France to modernise hardware that was exposed as outdated in its five-day war against Georgia in 2008.
"France has agreed to sell one Mistral warship to Russia," a Defence Ministry official told reporters.

France belongs to NATO and its willingness to sell Russia advanced technology that could be used in a confrontation with its forces or against its allies has caused concern among other NATO members.

Several of Russia's neighbours have also expressed worries. Lithuania wrote to France in November asking for clarification of the situation and details of the ship's ammunition.

Hamas leader Mashaal visits Moscow

The leader of the Palestinian terror group Hamas is visiting Moscow as Russia seeks to expand its role in Middle East peacemaking.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued no information about Monday's meeting between Khaled Mashaal and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Moscow hopes to host a Middle East peace conference but has not yet set a date.

In Russian eyes, Hamas is an integral part of the peace process despite strong opposition from Israel and the US, which list the organization as a terrorist group. Russia has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Russia is part of the so-called Quartet of Mideast peace-brokers that also includes the US, the European Union and the United Nations.

Mashaal visit to Russia comes less than a week before Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will travel to Moscow, on Sunday next week.

Netanyahu is expected to stay in Russia for three days of talks focusing on getting Russia to back stepped-up sanctions against Iran.

UPDATE: NYTIMES: Gates Opposes Arms Sale to Russia

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told French officials Monday that he was concerned about their plans to sell Mistral-class amphibious assault ships to Russia, although there is little if anything the United States could do to block the deal, officials said.

Russia has been engaged in months-long negotiations over what would be the first significant purchase of advanced NATO weaponry since the collapse of communism. Each of the Mistral warships costs up to $750 million, and the vessels, which can launch helicopters carrying troops and armored vehicles, would be viewed as a notable addition to the Kremlin’s rusting fleet.

Mr. Gates chose the well-known diplomatic code for disagreement in describing his discussion of the arms sale with his French counterpart, Defense Minister Herve Morin.

“I think I would just say that we had a good and thorough exchange of views,” Mr. Gates said.

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, said later that Mr. Gates’ meetings here were “very amicable and positive” on a range of issues, including the NATO effort in Afghanistan, but that Mr. Gates “made our concerns very clear” on the arms sale.

The weapons deal has raised alarm in capitals across formerly Soviet territory — in particular in the republic of Georgia, which fought a war with Russia and sees the vessels as a threat that could be based in the Black Sea off its shores.

It seems ridiculous to claim that Bond and Hoekstra got fully briefed on the strategy for handling Abdulmutallab when DNI Dennis Blair, FBI Director Robert Mueller, and others in the counterterrorist chain of command have already testified that they didn’t get briefed on that decision until it was made.

If the White House didn’t consult Mueller or Blair, why would they have picked up the phone and called Bond and Hoekstra? Brennan’s claim that a call giving the two the outline of the attack somehow amounts to acquiescence of the point of Mirandizing a terrorist before fully interrogating him is ludicrous, and obviously self-serving.

Fiat, GM, the Post Office, Social Security, Medikare, Medikaid, public education, the FDA, the TSA, higher education, etc. are cancers: they feed on us, destroy us, and take us over from within; they have no redeeming value and yet, because they are gubbmint cancer, you can't kill them. You have to feed them your time and your labor and your children's futures until they are the death of your nation.

Of course Fiat is interested in the incentives that it has admitted its addiction to. Berlusconi’s paternal pronunciation merely indicates that Fiat isn’t ready to guarantee jobs at the money-losing Imerese plant, which is the Italian government’s political price. “We have to have the courage to say that there have been enough government handouts if they do not safeguard jobs and industrial sites,” explains Italian Senate Speaker Renato Schifani.

Read the whole thing. It's our not-too-distant future if we don't decimate the federal government with pitchforks and torches if necessary. We have to be more united than unions and the ever-growing public sector so that we don't have to be as thuggish, brutal, or unaccountable. It can't be that hard. A LEADING British government scientist has warned the United Nations’ climate panel to tackle its blunders or lose all credibility.

Robert Watson, chief scientist at Defra, the environment ministry, who chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2002, was speaking after more potential inaccuracies emerged in the IPCC’s 2007 benchmark report on global warming.

The most important is a claim that global warming could cut rain-fed north African crop production by up to 50% by 2020, a remarkably short time for such a dramatic change. The claim has been quoted in speeches by Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, and by Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general.

This weekend Professor Chris Field, the new lead author of the IPCC’s climate impacts team, told The Sunday Times that he could find nothing in the report to support the claim. The revelation follows the IPCC’s retraction of a claim that the Himalayan glaciers might all melt by 2035.

The African claims could be even more embarrassing for the IPCC because they appear not only in its report on climate change impacts but, unlike the glaciers claim, are also repeated in its Synthesis Report. This report is the IPCC’s most politically sensitive publication, distilling its most important science into a form accessible to politicians and policy makers. Its lead authors include Pachauri himself.

In it he wrote: “By 2020, in some countries, yields from rain-fed agriculture could be reduced by up to 50%. Agricultural production, including access to food, in many African countries is projected to be severely compromised.” The same claims have since been cited in speeches to world leaders by Pachauri and Ban.

Speaking at the 2008 global climate talks in Poznan, Poland, Pachauri said: “In some countries of Africa, yields from rain-fed agriculture could be reduced by 50% by 2020.” In a speech last July, Ban said: “Yields from rain-fed agriculture could fall by half in some African countries over the next 10 years.”

Speaking this weekend, Field said: “I was not an author on the Synthesis Report but on reading it I cannot find support for the statement about African crop yield declines.”

Watson said such claims should be based on hard evidence. “Any such projection should be based on peer-reviewed literature from computer modelling of how agricultural yields would respond to climate change. I can see no such data supporting the IPCC report,” he said.

And make no mistake about it: leftist utopianists have killed more people than any other ideology in human history - (except for Islam - which has done it over more centuries). PolPot was a utopianst. So was Mao, and Stalin and Hitler and Kim il Sung and Mugabe and Castro and so on.

Conservatives don't believe in the perfectibility of man or government or society. That's why the Founding Fathers wanted LIMITED government with checks and balances and divided power.

The Founding Fathers knew that because humanity wasn't perfect, a too powerful government run by humans would inevitably decline into tyranny. And they knew that each of us has OUR OWN IDEA OF WHAT'S PERFECT FOR US. And that this is different for all people. And that therefore government mustn't decide for us what is best for everyone.

For a conservative, an ideal world is one in which each of us is free to live our lives according to what makes us happy - and where we each take individual responsibility for our own IMPERFECT lives, its up and its downs.

It's understandable that utopianists should be the most murderous people in history: if you believed that all that stood between the current screwed-up world and Utopia for 6 billion people - and a world without hunger or climate change or war or disease or greed and so on - was a few million or a few hundred million people or their "rights", then you would do what they have always done and continue to try to do: kill millions to get there.

And this is what animates the Democrats' efforts right here in the USA - today.

And this is why they must be stopped.

Utopianists have never failed to create DYSTOPIA. Mugabe did it. Castro too. And Stalin and Mao and Hitler and so on.

And if the utopianistic Democrat Party succeeds here then we will be poorer, and less free.
