Thank you. Just to follow up on Jake's question earlier, sir: So many Americans are concerned that this plan, particularly the government insurance, the public option, would lead to reduced benefits or reduced coverage. Two questions.

One, can you guarantee that this legislation will lock in and say the government will never deny any services, that that's going to be decided by the doctor and the patient, and the government will not deny any coverage?

And secondarily, can you, as a symbolic gesture, say that you and the Congress will abide by the same benefits in that public option?

Now, you know, there have been reports just over the last couple of days of insurance companies making record profits, right now. At a time when everybody's getting hammered, they're making record profits, and premiums are going up.

What's the constraint on that?

How can -- how can you ensure that those costs aren't being passed on to employers or passed on to employees, the American people, ordinary middle-class families, in a way that over time is going to make them broke? Well, part of the way is to make sure that there's some competition out there.

So -- so that's the idea.

Obama's answer proves his lack of understanding of the free market and his basic lack of faith in it.

There are no barriers of entry for anyone starting a health insurance company.

If premiums are really TOO HIGH for the care which people need, then there would be a HUGE opening for a new insurance company to offer a NEW cheaper insurance plan and still make money - maybe MORE money because they would attract a HUGE number of applicants.

The fact that they don’t is NOT because there is no competition; it’s because there is no such thing as cheaper care which is better.

Teddy Kennedy is not seeking the cheapest care; he is seeking the best REGARDLESS of cost or cost benefit.

That’s why he is alive.

A government plan such as Obama’s would NOT pay for the care Teddy has been getting.

As another smarter blogger noted - at NRO, if I recall correctly - we don’t need a government grocery store to keep grocery prices competitive. And we don’t need a government airline, or a government hair salon or a government clothing company to keep those industries competitive.

Government colleges have not meant that Ivy League schools charge less.

This is Obama's recipe for America

An NHS [British government] hospital is to be scrutinised in a second official inquiry after a report found that “appalling” emergency care led to patients dying needlessly. Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, said that current and former staff would be expected to co-operate with the independent inquiry into Stafford Hospital.

In March an investigation by the Healthcare Commission condemned “appalling” and “shocking” standards of care at the hospital, run by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. Between 400 and 1,200 more people died than would have been expected in a three-year period, and a lack of nursing staff was said to have contributed to poor patient care.

Despite two additional Department of Health reviews, campaigners and nursing unions have called for a public inquiry to analyse what part Government targets played in the failings. Mr Burnham said that the new inquiry would be chaired by Robert Francis, QC, a leading clinical negligence lawyer, who will hear evidence from patients and families and identify lessons for the future.

The inquiry was announced as part of measures to tackle “exceptional failures” in foundation trusts, which have a degree of independence from the Department of Health and control most NHS hospitals in the country. The Government said that if the chairman considered it necessary to require witnesses to attend, the Secretary of State would take the necessary steps to ensure this happened.

Andrew Lansley, the Shadow Health Secretary, said that the inquiry would not go far enough. “This independent inquiry could play a part in renewing public confidence but not to the same extent as a public inquiry,” he said. “While I welcome the acknowledgement that individual cases have not been given a sufficient hearing, other critical issues have been sidelined. The terms of reference neither scrutinise the role of the Department of Health nor the impact of the Government’s policies.”

Last week Antony Sumara was appointed as chief executive of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, while Sir Stephen Moss was appointed as chairman. Former chief executive Martin Yeates resigned in March, along with the chairman, Toni Brisby, before the damning report was published. [They should both be prosecuted for murder]

Current bills would expand the number of insured — but 90 percent of voters already have insurance. Congressional leaders say the bills would cut costs. But experts are dubious. Instead, they point out that covering the uninsured would cost billions.

Jordan is Revoking En Masse the Citizenship of PA Arabs

They fear an influx of them in anticipation of the two-state solution. That's also just a pretext to get rid of the most undesirable members of their society, who are the most dangerous, have the most entitled attitude, give back the least, and suck up a disproportionate amount of social services.

This raises two questions:

1) Will it suddenly become uncool to be a Fakestinian like Queen Rania (a Kuwaiti)?

2) Will the international community in general, and leftards in particular condemn Jordan for this, the way they condemn Israel for having the same wall to keep out the same people for the same reason as do Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt?

Doubt it. Being a Fakestinian has never been cool among Arabs. It's the lowest caste. Support for Obama on healthcare slips - poll

Public support for President Barack Obama's handling of healthcare reform, the pillar of his legislative agenda, has fallen below 50 percent for the first time, a Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Monday said.

Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress have run into stiff opposition this month as they try to pass legislation to restructure the $2.5 trillion U.S. healthcare industry through the creation of a government-run health insurance program. Republicans and some fiscally conservative Democrats argue the plan, with an estimated cost of more than $1 trillion, could hurt small businesses, add to budget deficits and reduce the quality of medical care for many Americans.

Those concerns may be having an impact on the public, according to the poll, which showed 49 percent of respondents approving of Obama's stand on the issue compared to 57 percent in April. Those saying they disapproved rose to 44 percent from 29 percent during the same period.

Obama and the White House have gone on the offensive to drum up support for the plan, which would compete with private insurers, provide cover to many of the 46 million uninsured and try to stem runaway medical costs. With time running out to pass a bill in Congress this year, the battle is shaping up as a major test of Obama's presidency. Delaying legislation until 2010, a congressional election year, could give Republicans and critics in the healthcare sector more time to galvanize opposition to the plan.

But Obama remains more trusted than Republicans in Congress to do a better job on healthcare reform, the poll showed, with 54 percent of respondents putting their faith in the U.S. leader versus 34 percent in favor of Republican lawmakers. His overall approval rating also remains high at 59 percent despite some slippage in approval ratings for his handling of the economy, the federal budget deficit and other leading domestic issues, according to the poll.

It surveyed 1,001 adults randomly by telephone between July 15-18, 2009. The results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus/minus three percentage points.

Indeed, last year marked the blankest year of the Sun in the last half-century — 266 days with not a single sunspot visible from Earth.

Then, in the first four months of 2009, the Sun became even more blank, the pace of sunspots slowing more. “It’s been as dead as a doornail,” David Hathaway, a solar physicist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., said a couple of months ago.

The Sun perked up in June and July, with a sizeable clump of 20 sunspots earlier this month. Now it is blank again, consistent with expectations that this solar cycle will be smaller and calmer, and the maximum of activity, expected to arrive in May 2013 will not be all that maximum.

... Among some global warming skeptics, there is speculation that the Sun may be on the verge of falling into an extended slumber similar to the so-called Maunder Minimum, several sunspot-scarce decades during the 17th and 18th centuries that coincided with an extended chilly period.

Most solar physicists do not think anything that odd is going on with the Sun. With the recent burst of sunspots, “I don’t see we’re going into that,” Dr. Hathaway said last week.

Still, something like the Dalton Minimum — two solar cycles in the early 1800s that peaked at about an average of 50 sunspots — lies in the realm of the possible, Dr. Hathaway said. (The minimums are named after scientists who helped identify them: Edward W. Maunder and John Dalton.)

For all the attention generated by last year's presidential race, census figures show the share of eligible voters who actually went to the polls in November declined from 2004.

Census figures released Monday show about 63.6 percent of eligible voters, or 131.1 million people, cast ballots last November. Although that represented an increase of 5 million voters, the turnout was a decrease when taking into account population growth. In 2004, the voting rate was 63.8 percent.

According to the data, more older whites opted to stay home compared with 2004, citing little interest in supporting either Barack Obama or John McCain.

"The potential financial commitment the American taxpayers could be responsible for is of a size and scope that isn't even imaginable," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. "If you spent a million dollars a day going back to the birth of Christ, that wouldn't even come close to just $1 trillion -- $23.7 trillion is a staggering figure."

Yeah, that wouldn't turn dollars into less than pennies overnight. Great idea!

Let it fail. All of it. That's the only way. Do they want for the financial system to fail and a violent, armed revolution to take back our failed government? It seems to me that they're begging for blood, because it's all going to fail either way.
