If one turns off the engine on a Prius, IT WILL NOT "COAST TO A STOP".
IT WILL GRIND TO A SUDDEN STOP.
In other words, if you turn off the ignition on a Prius, it would behave as other cars would if you put them in reverse.
GRIIIIIINNNNNNNNND!
From the LA Times:
The driver of a Toyota Prius who called 911 on Monday to report his accelerator was stuck finally got the car stopped after about 20 minutes with the help of the California Highway Patrol, officers said.I can almost guarantee you that the finding will point to the conclusion that this man is looking to set up a lawsuit against Toyota.
"He was reaching speeds over 90 miles per hour," CHP Officer Larry Landeros said of the driver, James Sikes.
A Toyota spokesman said Monday evening that the company, which has recalled millions of vehicles because of reports of unintended acceleration, was sending a representative to investigate the cause of the incident.
The cellphone call came about 1:30 p.m. from the driver of the blue 2008 Prius eastbound on Interstate 8 in San Diego County.
"He was driving near the La Posta Indian Reservation when he called 911 and said his gas pedal was stuck," Landeros said.
"I pushed the gas pedal to pass a car and it did something kind of funny . . . it jumped and it just stuck there," Sikes, 61, said at a news conference. "As it was going, I was trying the brakes . . . it wasn't stopping."
A CHP patrol officer caught up to the Prius about 20 minutes later and used a loudspeaker to tell the driver to apply his emergency brake in tandem with the brake pedal, Landeros said.
Once the Prius' speed dropped to about 50 mph, Sikes turned off the engine and was able to coast to a stop, the officer said.
Landeros didn't know why the driver waited until his speed had dropped to turn off the engine, but the officer speculated that Sikes feared losing the car's power steering.
The officer drove in front of Sikes' Prius to block the car if necessary. But the two cars never touched, Landeros said.
No one was hurt, the CHP said.
Toyota, the world's largest automaker, said it would look into the incident.
"We're sending a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the car and find out what happened," Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said.
"We won't be able to comment on what any possible problems with the car were until we take a look at the car."
I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE IT.
Once again, we find the LA Times writing a negative article about Toyota, one of the last successful major corporation still doing business in Southern California. California is in the top 5 in unemployment for the nation. And yet, the LA Times has no qualms about attacking the Southern California-based company.
They'll attack, attack, attack Toyota. But they don't write about the Chevy Cobalt recall.
The Toyota "sudden acceleration" problem, IF IT REALLY EXISTED, can be solved with a simple fix; PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND APPLY THE BRAKES. Yet, the LA Times NEVER tells you this.
If the LA Times really cared about the human element of the story, they would be shouting that fix from the rooftops, in order to potentially save lives.
But, the LA Times is just doing attack work on behalf of Government Motors. That's the real story here. Government Motors (GM for short) is attempting to take away market share from Toyota, and the LA Times is carrying the water for the Obama Administration in it's ongoing attack.
The LA Times attacks Toyota for a problem that there is an instant solution to, should it happen. But, the Chevy Cobalt problem is potentially deadly, and there is no instant solution. But, the LA Times doesn't bother reporting on that. It gives Government Motors a free pass.
Some are speculating that this is payback for Toyota closing down it's partnership factory with Government Motors. The factory was based in Fremont, CA, and it was called Nummi. Toyota pulled out of the partnership because GM could no longer afford it's share of the partnership.
Toyota has since embarked on re-training and re-locating all of it's employees. GM merely laid off all it's Nummi employees.
Do you want to live in Obamaville, the Government Motors company town?
Do you want to be Tom Joad, chewing on the Grapes of Wrath?
Do you want to still be fleeing the Obama Dustbowl after the upcoming 2010 Congressional elections?
If you answered "no" to the above questions, you had better get out and vote every Congressional Democrat out of office.
Obama is a menace. He is destroying America, and the ignoramuses - WHO DO NOT CARE ABOUT HUMAN BEINGS - at the LA Times are his attack poodles.
Pathetic. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

During the two 911 calls, Sikes ignored many of the dispatcher's questions, saying later that he had to put his phone on the seat to keep his hands on the wheel.
Leighann Parks, a 24-year-old dispatcher, repeatedly told him to throw the car into neutral but got no answers.
"He was very emotional, you could tell on the line he was panicked," Parks told reporters outside the CHP's El Cajon office. "I could only imagine being in his shoes and being that stressed."
Neibert told Sikes after the CHP caught up with him to shift to neutral but the driver shook his head no. Sikes told reporters he didn't go into neutral because he worried the car would flip.
my thought too, and this more detail shows it, he lied!
Google a map of "La Posta Indian Reservation" and note it is a remote area. Where was the driver of this prius supposedly heading?
Sounds like this driver wanted to avoid injury and found a safe area to be messing with the gas pedal.
He lied, it's been proven already ..so I ask you this...WHERE IS ALL THE MEDIA COVERAGE ABOUT HIS LIES????????
so it's all come out today that this jerk was trying to get out of a speeding ticket, so he lied and made the whole thing up. I am wonder which of our wonderful honest media outlets will jump to cover THIS story???
