CAN SCIENCE MAKE ABORTION OBSOLETE? CAN SCIENCE FIND A WAY TO ALLOW WOMEN TO TERMINATE UNWANTED PREGNANCIES WITHOUT TERMINATING THE BABY/FETUS/EMBRYO?
IF SCIENCE COULD MAKE ABORTION A VESTIGIAL OPERATION, IT WOULD SAVE LIVES, ("POTENTIAL LIVES" FOR YOU PRO-CHOICE FOLKS), AND "TAKE OFF THE TABLE" - ONCE AND FOR ALL TIME - THIS BITTER AND DIVISIVE ISSUE, AND IT WOULD LIBERATE OUR BODY POLITIC OF THIS ANNOYING SORE THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO EVER HEAL. (CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW MUCH MORE SIMPLE JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS WOULD BE ONCE FREED FROM THIS CONTROVERSY!?)
HOW MIGHT SCIENCE DO THIS?
EASY. IT'S ALREADY IS DOING IT. IT'S CALLED EMBRYONIC ADOPTION.
A FEW EEKS AGO, BUSH APPEARED WITH 21 CHILDREN WHO WERE ONCE FROZEN EMBRYOS IN "LIMBO" BUT WHO WERE ADOPTED BY PARENTS WHO WANTED A CHILD BUT COULD NOT CONCEIVE ONE OF THEIR OWN. ONE CHILD HAD BEEN AN EMBRYO FROZENS FOR OVER A DECADE! HE AND THE OTHER 21 CHILDREN WERE ONCE FROZEN EMBRYOS WHICH WERE "MADE" IN FERTUILITY CLINICS.
TO EXTEND THIS BIOMEDICAL PROCEDURE IN A WAY WHICH WOULD MAKE ABOPRTION OBSOLETE, ALL SCIENCE MUST DISCOVER IS: (1) HOW TO REMOVE AND FREEZE AND EMBRYOS FROM THE WOMB OF A WOMAN WHO IS PREGNANT (BUT WHO DOESN'T WANT TO CARRY THE CHILD TO TERM); AND (2) HOW LATE IN A PREGNANCY THIS EXTRACTION AND FREEZING CAN SAFELY BE DONE.
THEN, LEFT-WING AND RIGHT-WING AND RED-STATERS AND BLUE-STATERS MIGHT UNITE AND TOGETHER TRANSFORM ABORTION CLINICS INTO EXTRACTION/FREEZING/ADOPTION CENTERS.
THIS WOULD TRANSFORM A DIVISIVE ISSUE INTO A WIN-WIN-WIN: ONE WOMAN ENDS AN UN-WANTED PREGNANCY (WITHOUT TERMINATING THE FETUS); ANOTHER WOMAN WHO OTHERWISE COULDN'T GET PREGNANT GETS PREGNANT; AND A BABY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ABORTED IS BORN.
MAKE THAT WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN - BECAUSE THE PUBLIC WINS, TOO.

Interesting idea. The only problem I can see (its a problem even now)is the confusion caused to these children. It looks like in the future children will never know who their biological parents are. There needs to be more thought put into whats happening now with this problem before we create more of the same.
that confusion sure beats getting ABORTED.
i think this is a potential solution to the reluctant mother's problem (trhe micro-problem)and to the macro-poltical problem: it would make abortion practically and politically a a MOOT point.
a woman could "delay" giving birth, too - by haivng the embryo re-implanted later. a young woman who doesn't want to stop her career - at let's say 25 (or a teen at 15, even!) - might be better able and more likely to have a healthy baby (and to care for it porperly)if the embryo she conceived (with help!) when she was younger (and might've had an abortion) is INSTEAD, FROZEN and then YEARS OR DECADES later re-implanted into her when she is older/semi-retired at age 45!
The "problem" with not knowing about the biological parents would not be much different than "post-birth" adoptions now.
Some issues just don't have totally satisfying solutions. Even this adoption of embryoes is probably going to have some other drawbacks.
Astute; I will put a link to your blog on mine in a short while.

I'm a pro-choicer, and this is exactly what I'd like to see happen! Making abortion an obsolete choice. Where a woman or family questions, "why even consider abortion when there is THIS perfectly viable, perfectly safe option?" We need to invest our energies into exploring this option from a scientific and legal perspective -- making it safe, sound, and relatively easy to do. Right now, embryonic "adoptions" carry a lot of baggage .... When you adopt a child, the bio parents have rights to change their minds, and most states give them 30 days to do so. In an embryonic adoption, when does the clock start and stop for the bio parents? There are many questions that need resolution, many questions that need scientific research and development. Then we might be able to say one day that abortions are truly OBSOLETE! Everyone wins.
