The Bureau of Labor Statistics also calculates six alternate measures of unemployment, U1 through U6, that measure different aspects of unemployment:[79]

• U1:[80] Percentage of labor force unemployed 15 weeks or longer.
• U2: Percentage of labor force who lost jobs or completed temporary work.
• U3: Official unemployment rate per the ILO definition occurs when people are without jobs and they have actively looked for work within the past four weeks.[2]
• U4: U3 + "discouraged workers", or those who have stopped looking for work because current economic conditions make them believe that no work is available for them.
• U5: U4 + other "marginally attached workers", or "loosely attached workers", or those who "would like" and are able to work, but have not looked for work recently.
• U6: U5 + Part time workers who want to work full time, but cannot due to economic reasons (underemployment).
• Note: "Marginally attached workers" are added to the total labour force for unemployment rate calculation for U4, U5, and U6. The BLS revised the CPS in 1994 and among the changes the measure representing the official unemployment rate was renamed U3 instead of U5.[81]

Corporate ratings downgrades in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will “substantially” exceed upgrades this year as the sovereign debt crisis hampers economic growth, according to Moody’s Investors Service. 

The ratio of downgrades to upgrades soared to nine in the last three months of 2011 from less than two in the previous three quarters, Moody’s analysts including Jean-Michel Carayon in Paris wrote in a report published today. 

“The current trend for corporate rating actions is strongly negative,” the analysts wrote. “We expect that downgrades will continue to substantially exceed upgrades in the coming year for both investment-grade and speculative-grade corporates.”

Relations between the government and the military have seriously deteriorated in recent weeks. The Supreme Court is investigating an anonymous memo which sought US help to avert a possible military coup in Pakistan following the killing by US forces of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in May.

It is not clear who wrote the memo or conveyed it to the Americans. They say they received it but took no action. Pakistan's military - deeply humiliated by the discovery of Bin Laden on Pakistani soil and the secret US operation to kill him - has been incensed by the affair. 

The scandal has already cost Pakistan's former ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, his job. He denies any role in the memo, as does President Asif Ali Zardari. 

Mr Zardari could be forced to quit if the trail is found to lead to his door. The government is also on a collision course with the judiciary, which wants to reopen old corruption cases in which the president argues he is innocent.

Having career politicians use the government's power to come and take it away from those who earned it in order to give to someone else is unfair.  

It's especially unfair when these career politicians 'redistribute' it to parts of their political machine -  as Obama did with the UAW and the GM bailout which the taxpayer has lost billions on, Matt - BILLIONS. Much more than I EVER lost at Bain. 

And it's unfair when they take it away from those who earned it, in order to give it to their big donors as Obama did with Solyndra when he gave them $500 million. Matt, that's another half-a-billion of the taxpayer's hard-earned money down the drain.                         

Obama's attack on the most successful earners in our country is a political strategy, not an economic policy. 

It's meant to exploit people's fear and turn it into envy - and then anger. 

But, in the end, it won't help grow the economy. It can't. You can't grow the pie by slicing it up differently. And we need to grow the pie, grow the economy.

All Obama's attacks do is divide us and give Obama an excuse for redistributing our nation's wealth - taking earnings away from earners to give to his cronies. Matt, that's crony capitalism and it's bad and wrong.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green...'

Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's sake, while he damns the ants.

President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush 43, President Bush 41, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight.. Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share. 

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and peaceful, neighborhood.

A British Minister on Tuesday kept up his nation's mantra that Israeli construction is a material bar to final status talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority saying it is "counter productive."

British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt's comments came one day after a round of talks between officials from Jerusalem and Ramallah in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

Addressing a group of Bar-Ilan University political science students this afternoon, Burt said "Many will argue that now is not the time to make bold gestures. My advice is if you want stability, security and peace with your neighbors, and the best relations with the rest of the world, then making a deal with the Palestinians is urgent."

Burt also said that the building of settlements beyond the so-called 'Green Line' is counter-productive and insisted Jerusalem would have to be divided. Observers say Burt's comments carry a characteristic British undercurrent of criticism for Israel while remaining pointedly silent on the abject refusal of PA officials to come to the table for two years running.

And as usual, not a peep about the problems with the Islamic mindset over on the other side of the spectrum.

When the companies that supply motor fuel close the books on 2011, they will pay about $6.8 million in penalties to the Treasury because they failed to mix a special type of biofuel into their gasoline and diesel as required by law. 

At the South Dakota plant, Poet is testing its technology and the economics of producing ethanol from plant waste. But there was none to be had. Outside a handful of laboratories and workshops, the ingredient, cellulosic biofuel, does not exist. 

In 2012, the oil companies expect to pay even higher penalties for failing to blend in the fuel, which is made from wood chips or the inedible parts of plants like corncobs. Refiners were required to blend 6.6 million gallons into gasoline and diesel in 2011 and face a quota of 8.65 million gallons this year. 

“It belies logic,” Charles T. Drevna, the president of the National Petrochemicals and Refiners Association, said of the 2011 quota. And raising the quota for 2012 when there is no production makes even less sense, he said. 

Penalizing the fuel suppliers demonstrates what happens when the federal government really, really wants something that technology is not ready to provide. In fact, while it may seem harsh that the Environmental Protection Agency is penalizing them for failing to do the impossible, the agency is being lenient by the standards of the law, the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act.

Both campsites had working kitchens for weeks until last week, but protesters at McPherson Square voluntarily closed down
theirs after health inspectors pointed out unsanitary conditions during an informal monitoring visit. 

Akhter said his concerns about the health and safety at the camps prompted him to order a city-wide review of conditions there, including input from health inspectors, mental health professionals, experts on the homeless and others. He is reviewing their findings this week.“I’m very supportive of their rights and ability to demonstrate but I have concerns about their personal safety,” Akhter said.

The 28-year-old former military translator was born in Arizona and graduated from high school in Michigan. His family is of Iranian origin. His father, a professor at a community college in Flint, Michigan, has said his son is not a CIA spy and was visiting his grandmothers in Iran when he was arrested.

His trial took place as the U.S. announced new, tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, which Washington believes Tehran is using to develop a possible atomic weapons capability.

 A proposal to allow female Muslim footballers to wear the hijab during matches has been criticised by several groups in France, who have written to FIFA President Sepp Blatter to protest. 

FIFA's ruling Executive Committee decided last month to put forward a proposal to lift the ban on women wearing the Islamic headscarf and it will be put before the International Football Association Board (IFAB) at its next meeting in London on March 3.  

But a letter signed by the League of International Women's Rights (LDIF), FEMIX'SPORTS and the French Coordination for the European Women's Lobby have claimed that it would be unfair discrimination. 

"To accept a special dress code for women athletes not only introduces discrimination among athletes but is contrary to the rules governing sport movement, setting a same dress code for all athletes without regard to origin or belief," the three groups said in the letter seen by insidethegames. 

The groups claim that if the ban is lifted it would contravene FIFA's own rules, as well as those of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). 

"FIFA rules are clear: 'The basic compulsory equipment must not contain any political, religious or personal statements' (law 4)," the letter said. 

"So is the Olympic Charter: 'No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic site, venues or other areas' (rule 51)." 

France banned Muslim women from wearing hijab in public places in 2004 and the face-veil in 2011. 

The proposal to lift the ban has been led by Prince Ali Bin Hussein of Jordan, the vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).  

It followed a number of controversies involving Iran's women teams, including being forced to forfeit an Olympic London 2012 qualifying match against Jordan after not being allowed to play with the full Islamic headscarf and being briefly banned from the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in 2010 for the same reason before a compromise was reached. 

"The reasons for the FIFA reversal are unacceptable," the French groups said in their letter to Blatter. 

"It is now alleged that the hijab may be accepted as a 'cultural rather than a religious symbol' and therefore no longer contradicts the rule. 

"FIFA is therefore accepting the recommendation of the workshop that took place in Amman last October, under the authority of FIFA vice-president prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein in order to satisfy the most conservative Islamic states. 

"To maintain that the hijab is a cultural rather than a religious symbol is not only preposterous it is untrue. 

"Nor can you ignore the fact that the dispute between FIFA and the Iranian regime is linked to Tehran's desire to impose its own religious law on women's sport. 

"Sport must stay clear of political and religious interference. Its aim is also to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

The Knesset on Tuesday will hold a special session on illegal construction - and the abject failure of authorities to ensure order - in eastern Jerusalem.

The hearing comes due to recent admissions by government officials that code and law enforcement in Jerusalem's eastern neighborhoods is virtually non-existent because the authorities, including police, are afraid of entering the area and applying Israeli sovereignty there.

Lawyer Amir Fischer told Arutz Sheva he filed a petition demanding a government response due to the grim state of affairs in eastern Jerusalem, saying,"For fifteen years they have not enforced the law."

Fischer added that although his petition focused on the villages of A'akab and Atarot, the reality is pervasive throughout the Jerusalem's eastern neighborhoods.

The official response to Fischer's petition said, the "security situation in these neighborhoods is complex, largely influenced by the proximity between these areas to Judea and Samaria. Security forces in the sector routinely encounter violence and demonstrations, throwing rocks, throwing petrol bombs, blocking roads, and laying of pipe bombs, and more."

The state further argued "the responsibility for enforcing the planning and building laws rests with the Jerusalem municipality and that, due to the security situation, inspectors did not enter these areas for fifteen years. Entrance to the village requires military escorts and requires justification for using such resources." [...]

Fischer said he was ashamed of the state's response saying anarchy was the rule in parts of Israel's capital and that the question was one of national consequence.

"This affects our sovereignty in Jerusalem," Fischer said, noting the failure to enforce Israeli law in Jerusalem runs counter to the Basic Law on Jerusalem and undercuts Israeli claims to its own capital.

Law enforcement can take a lot of monetary resources, but it's very necessary and vital, and this is going to have to be made clear in the session they're going to hold on this issue.

Palestinians have no interest in resuming peace talks with Israel but are more focused on their UN membership. The statement was made by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman while in Amman for the second round of talks between Palestinian and Israeli delegations. "As far as the Palestinians are concerned, they were dragged to negotiations in Jordan against their will. They intend to continue with the meetings in Jordan until January 26, and then storm again the Security Council to obtain membership" said the Foreign Minister addressing the Foreign Affairs and Defence Parliamentary Committee. During the last few days, Palestinians informed that they expect few openings on the part of Israel and that they will maintain their positions on issues like the settlements.

The American Spectator's John Tabin, who was at the meeting Paul and Weiss were at, says that:

On the way out, I overheard a late-middle-aged Ron Paul supporter, identifiable by button and sticker, talking to one of the Neturei Karta guys, saying that “The Zionist are godless atheists … they only believe in themselves.” Ron Paul may not hate Israel, but people who hate Israel sure seem to like Ron Paul.

 Mr. Speaker, how did the 20-year war get started? It had
been long assumed that the United States Government, shortly before Iraq invaded Kuwait in August of 1990, gave Saddam Hussein a green light to attack. A State Department cable recently published by WikiLeaks confirmed that U.S. Ambassador April Glaspie did indeed have a conversation with Saddam Hussein one week prior to Iraq's August 1, 1990, invasion of Kuwait. Amazingly, the released cable was entitled, ``Saddam's Message of Friendship to President Bush.'' In it, Ambassador Glaspie affirmed to Saddam that ``the President had instructed her to broaden and deepen our relations with Iraq.'' As Saddam Hussein outlined Iraq's ongoing border dispute with Kuwait, Ambassador Glaspie was quite clear that, ``we took no position on these Arab affairs.'' [UMPH ADDED] 

There would have been no reason for Saddam Hussein not to take this assurance at face value. The U.S. was quite supportive of his invasion and war of aggression against Iran in the 1980s. With this approval from the U.S. Government, it wasn't surprising that the invasion occurred. The shock and surprise was how quickly the tables were turned and our friend, Saddam Hussein, all of a sudden became Hitler personified.

SHE WAS NOT TELLING SADDAM THAT THE USA WOULD LOOK THE OTHER WAY IF HE INVADED; SHE WAS SAYING THAT WE DIDN'T GIVE A CRAP WHERE THE BORDER WAS.

AND  THIS IS THE POINT AT WHICH PAUL'S HYPOCRISY REACHES ASTOUNDING LEVELS:

• AS AN ISOLATIONIST RON PAUL IS ALWAYS SAYING THAT OUR PROBLEMS ARE THE RESULT OF BLOW-BACK FOR WHEN WE INTERFERE WHERE WE SHOULDN'T.
