With Christmas only two days away and snow covering much of Britain, many are beginning to realise that they might not be quite where they hoped to be for the festivities.
As another day of freezing weather grounded hundreds of flights, jammed motorways and left some communities trapped by snow and ice, even travel plans for the shortest distances were being ripped up or reconsidered.
An estimated 12 million people had hoped to travel somewhere this Christmas: some abroad, others across the country. It did not seem so bold an undertaking last week, but that was before 2,000 people were stranded overnight in Hampshire, and the mild commuter town of Basingstoke witnessed scenes that some thought akin to a horror movie.
Although the overall picture was improving yesterday, crucial parts of the road network were clogged, and for some time it remained difficult to leave Wales.
