VIA HOT AIR: On the Fourth - like TJ, another great American.
How fitting.
He was a great defender of the USA and a staunch skeptic of the UN.
He's been missed in the Senate for a long time.
We need more like him in the Senate.
A real conservative.
RIP, Senator!
UPDATE: More here.
and John Adams
ReplyDeleteUgh.
ReplyDeleteI recall a ridiculous incident where Helms seemed pleased that one of his Klan buddies expressed gratitude:
"... when a caller to CNN's Larry King Live show praised guest Jesse Helms for "everything you've done to help keep down the niggers," Helms' response was to salute the camera and say, "Well, thank you, I think." (Wilmington Star-News, 9/16/95)"

I heard that with my own ears, and I won't forget it.
I guess he was a man of his era.
That was twenty years ago.
That was twenty years ago.
That was twenty years ago.
That was twenty years ago.
I've been hearing that sorry-assed excuse for racists all my life. I'm 45, old enough to remember a few different "twenty years" agos.
not very christian of ya...
ReplyDeletethe dems forgave bobbie byrd.
can't you be as forgiving as an atheistic dem?!
helsm import was in his foreign affairs service and anti0un service.
ReplyDeletelegislation bearing his name beside that of biden did a lot of good.
In the 1990's, Congress passed a bipartisan bill - the Helms-Biden Act - which forced the federal government to withhold UN dues until the UN reformed. It worked. It's time to use that tactic again...

Ok, in the interest of ecumenicism, I will reach out to the atheistic humanist community by forgiving Jesse Helms.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt, there were some good things about him. He wasn't my kind of guy. I wouldn't have voted for him. Glad I didn't live in that part of the country during his hey-day.
YOOZ A GOOD MAN.
