WEEKEND WITH THE ARTS: GABRIEL FAURE

There's more to life than war, taxes and politics - and a lot of it's more fun, too! That's why every WEEKEND, here at THE ASTUTE BLOGGERS, we post some of the cultural things we're into, things we think you might also find entertaining, enriching, and stimulating.

After all, the arts - ALL ARTS, not just fine arts - are a big part of what our liberty is for, and what we're fighting to defend!

THIS WEEK: GABRIEL FAURE - A FEW DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE PAVANE, AND HIS VERSION OF LIBERA ME:

FAURE HIMSELF - ON A PLAYER PIANO!

JOHN WILLIAMS AND BRANFORD MARSALIS AND THE BOSTON POPS!

A SEXTET IN A MOSCOW LIBRARY!

VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY CONDUCTING A JAPANESE ORCHESTRA IN VIENNA!

Libera Me is a part of the Requiem Mass of the Roman Catholic Church, as such it is in Latin.
These are the lyrics:

Libera Me

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna
in die illa tremenda
quando coeli movendi sunt et terra,
dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.

Tremens factus sum ego et timeo,
dum discussion venerit atque venture ira:
quando coeli movendi sunt et terra.

English Translation:

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death
on that awful day
when the heavens and earth shall be shaken
and you shall come to judge the world by fire.

I am seized with fear and trembling
until the trial is at hand and the wrath to come:
when the heavens and earth shall be shaken.
