UPDATE: For a POTUS and Commander in Chief to return the Marine's salute is rather recent: though FDR frequently saluted the troops, it was Reagan who made saluting the uniformed serviceman when embarking or disembarking from AF-1 or Marine-1 a regular practice. My problem with Obama is not whether he saluted or not, and whether a salute is the proper etiquette. My problem is THE WAY Obama saluted: having decided to carry-on with the tradition started by Reagan in 1981, and followed by GHW Bush, and Clinton, And GW Bush, he could have put down the coffee and buttoned his suit-coat and done it with respect. A salute without the respect it should connote is a sign of deep disrespect.
