The head of a Florida-based, pro-family organization says he is lobbying the legislature to pass a statute that would keep Sharia law out of Florida courtrooms. The American public - including the Tea Parties - also need to lobby to ensure human rights will be protected from such horrors.
The Florida Senate Rules Committee is the final Senate committee that must approve SB 386 called "Application of Foreign Law in Certain Cases" so it can go to the full Senate.
The American Laws for American Courts statute is based on bills in other states. It would prohibit Sharia and other foreign laws from being used in Florida court proceedings, and has already been approved by several other committees.
"Judges are not to consider international laws, laws of other countries including Sharia law, and in particular in divorce cases," says David Caton, president of the Florida Family Association.
Sharia law is very cruel in its treatment of women, says Caton.
"It ranges from the unspeakable act to a woman's personhood, to even killing the woman in the name of honor to demean and mistreat women," he advises.
He warns that a male Muslim could enter a Florida court and claim that, according to Sharia law, he has the right to their children.
That is not how American courts operate, Caton points out, and says that is why the Florida legislature needs to provide directives to the courts to prevent it from happening.
The committee is expected to vote Wednesday afternoon.
