Hagia Sophia was built to be a Church in the 13th century.
This Church has been a museum for a long time - Attaturk made it into a Museum.
Before that, Muslims had been running it as a Mosque, but Attaturk the Visionary knew that Turkey would never progress as long as Islam reigned supreme over the personal, religious, and political lives of Turks.
And, he was right. Turkey reformed and boomed under Attaturk.
It has become yet another hateful, anti-Semitic cesspool under Barack Obama's friend, Erdogan.
This is a major step back.
It was the largest Catherdral of all time, in the city that was, at one point, the center of Christendom...
... before muslims INVADED.

UPDATE - Punditarian comments:
This is a very sad development indeed.
The Church is actually far older than that.
It is the third Church on the site, the first was built in the 5th century, as was the second.
The third was built in the sixth century, and survived with many alterations and repairs through numerous earthquakes and other disasters.
But the worst disaster that befell it was the Muslim conquest.
It was used as a mosque beginning in the 15th century.
The secular government of Ataturk converted it into a museum in 1935.
Using it as a mosque again means that Kemalism is dead, and Turkey is now a jihadist state.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN SEEING IN TURKEY IS A SLOW-MOTION VERSION OF WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN EGYPT AN WHAT HAPPENED IN IRAN.
SLOW OR FAST, THE ROAD LEADS TO THE SAME SAD, TYRANNICAL, DEHUMANIZING, IMPOVERISHED, IGNORANT, MISOGYNISTIC, EVIL PLACE.

And the West continues in a state of denial as to what's gaining ground in all Islamic nations.
