Grouping students into seven academic disciplines, the study shows wide differences in the number of hours they put into schoolwork outside the classroom. Among students concentrating in engineering, 42 percent say they spend at least 20 hours per week on such study, well ahead of any other group.
They are followed, in descending order, by students studying physical sciences, biological sciences, arts and humanities, education and social sciences.
Business majors ranked last, with 19 percent saying they spend 20 hours or more each week on schoolwork.
As the hours spent studying decline, the hours given to other duties increase.
Business majors spend the most time at paying jobs, averaging 16 hours a week, while engineering students spend the least, 9 hours. Education and business majors also have the heaviest family responsibilities.

As anxiety over Iran grows, Canada forges stronger defence ties with Israel
Canada and Israel are about to complete a number of defence co-operation agreements that will significantly tighten military bonds between the two countries as tensions grow over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
And Defence Minister Peter MacKay refused Wednesday to rule out a mutual-defence agreement that would oblige Canada to come to Israel's defence should the latter be attacked.
Appearing together at a media conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, MacKay and his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak said they anticipate negotiations will be completed by the end of the year.
"Israel needs strong, reliable partners, which Canada is certainly one," MacKay said. "I would argue they could not find a more supportive country on the planet."
The ministers said the agreements will cover a range of areas, including intelligence sharing, joint research and development, and military exchange programs.
"The steps that we're taking today are in fact bringing our countries closer together," MacKay said, "and they are also allowing us to further build on a strong foundation of co-operation that will build tangible results, not just to our two militaries, but to Canada and Israel more broadly."

A new proposal by Likud MKs Danny Danon and Yariv Levin promises to put an end to the uniquely Israeli phenomenon of “do-gooding” groups taking it upon themselves to represent in petitions before the High Court individuals or groups that in their judgment have been damaged. The phenomenon is often associated with leftist groups representing Arabs seeking to dislodge Jews from property and homes; the Arabs are generally not a party to the petition, but the court, when asked to, often takes these cases on and, more often than not, rules in favor of the Arabs – without their having even signed an agreement to allow the groups to represent them.Unless those who the leftists supposedly represent are part of this, they cannot be allowed to just go ahead and file a suit.
According to the new law, groups would be allowed to file petitions on the part of complainants only if they attach their names to the petition. In addition, the law will require that only Israeli groups be allowed to file petitions – as opposed to the current situation, where groups from the PA and abroad file petition on all manner of issues on behalf of individuals whom the groups claim have had their rights violated – often without permission or even the knowledge of the people whose rights they claim to be fighting for. In addition, the group filing the petition will be required to release the sources of its income and who its main donors over the last three years were.
“The left uses the High Court to advance its political agenda, and this bring dishonor on the court,” Danon said. Groups like Peace Now, he said, file High Court petitions at the drop of a hat and damage the image and effectiveness of the Court.

Larry Lang, chair professor of Finance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said in a lecture that he didn’t think was being recorded that the Chinese regime is in a serious economic crisis—on the brink of bankruptcy.In his memorable formulation: every province in China is Greece.... Lang’s assessment that the regime is bankrupt was based on five conjectures.
Firstly, that the regime’s debt sits at about 36 trillion yuan (US$5.68 trillion). This calculation is arrived at by adding up Chinese local government debt (between 16 trillion and 19.5 trillion yuan, or US$2.5 trillion and US$3 trillion), and the debt owed by state-owned enterprises (another 16 trillion, he said). But with interest of two trillion per year, he thinks things will unravel quickly.Secondly, that the regime’s officially published inflation rate of 6.2 percent is fabricated. The real inflation rate is 16 percent, according to Lang.Thirdly, that there is serious excess capacity in the economy, and that private consumption is only 30 percent of economic activity. Lang said that beginning this July, the Purchasing Managers Index, a measure of the manufacturing industry, plunged to a new low of 50.7. This is an indication, in his view, that China’s economy is in recession.Fourthly, that the regime’s officially published GDP of 9 percent is also fabricated. According to Lang’s data, China’s GDP has decreased 10 percent. He said that the bloated figures come from the dramatic increase in infrastructure construction, including real estate development, railways, and highways each year (accounting for up to 70 percent of GDP in 2010).Fifthly, that taxes are too high. Last year, the taxes on Chinese businesses (including direct and indirect taxes) were at 70 percent of earnings. The individual tax rate sits at 81.6 percent, Lang said.....

LONDON (AP) -- Europe appears headed for a recession — if it isn't in one already.
Economic growth has all but stopped in Europe, statistics showed Tuesday. The stall comes just when Italy, Greece and other nations need growth to help them wriggle out of the chokehold of debt.
The European Union economy grew a paltry 0.2 percent in July, August and September compared with the three months before, the EU statistics agency said. That is the same growth rate as the previous quarter, and far slower than the 0.7 percent before that.
And the picture is probably even worse. The statistics did not include Italy and Greece, the two countries in the most debt trouble. And their debt crisis only got worse in October, the month after this snapshot was taken.
Besides lowering standards of living and hurting the job market in Europe, a recession would be bad news for the U.S., which sells 20 percent of its exports to Europe, and for Asia.

UH-OH: Eurozone bail-out fund had to buy much of its own first offering
The European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) last week announced it had successfully sold a €3bn 10-year bond in support of Ireland.
However, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that target was only met after the EFSF resorted to buying up several hundred million euros worth of the bonds.
Sources said the EFSF had spent more than € 100m buying up its own bonds to help it achieve its funding target after the banks leading the deal were only able to find about €2.7bn of outside demand for the debt.
The revelation will be seen as a major failure and a worrying sign of future buyers strike after EFSF officials and their bankers had spent recent weeks travelling the world attempting to persuade key investors, including China's national wealth fund and Japanese government funds, to buy its bonds.
I don't think this Ponzi Scheme can be kept afloat much longer...
