Insiders say Atty. Gen. Eric Holder is close to naming a prosecutor to look into reports of excessive waterboarding and other unauthorized methods. Convictions could be hard to get.
Reporting from Washington -- U.S. Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. is poised to appoint a criminal prosecutor to investigate alleged CIA abuses committed during the interrogation of terrorism suspects, current and former U.S. government officials said.
A senior Justice Department official said that Holder envisioned an inquiry that would be narrow in scope, focusing on "whether people went beyond the techniques that were authorized" in Bush administration memos that liberally interpreted anti-torture laws.The time has come for both Democrats and Republicans to take a deep breath and recognize the reality of what happened after Sept. 11, 2001. The question is not the sincerity or the patriotism of those who were dealing with the aftermath of Sept. 11. The country was frightened, and political leaders were trying to respond as best they could. Judgments were made. Some of them were wrong. But that should not taint those public servants who did their duty pursuant to the legal guidance provided.OBAMA AND HOLDER WOULD RATHER CRIPPLE OUR CIA AND FURTHER AID THE ENEMY, THAN JUST "MOVE ON" (YOU SHOULD PARDON THE EXPRESSION!).

IF LEON PANETTA HAS A SHRED OF INTEGRITY HE WILL RESIGN.

I THINK HE ACTUALLY SUBMITTED HS RESIGNATION EFFECTIVE THE DAY OBAMA AND AXELROD AND RAHM FIND A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT. (AND I THINK THIS STORY WAS LEAKED BY THE PANETTA - A FORMER W.H. C.O.S. WHO KNOWS HOW TO USE THE DC BELTWAY MEDIA - AND THE CIA TO PROMPT OBAMA.)
