Snow will hit the UK over the weekend during the coldest winter for 13 years, forecasters are predicting.

More snow to come in the coldest winter for a decade

THIS winter has been the coldest for more than a decade and forecasters warn more snow is on the way.

The east coast will see the return of wintry showers and ice-cold winds coming in from Russia. They are predicted to hit tomorrow night and Monday morning, with the cold weather set to last well into next week. So far, the UK winter has been the coldest since 1996-97.

With an average temperature of 0.7 degrees Celsius, January has been the coldest month in the Netherlands for 12 years. The national weather centre (KNMI) says the usual average is at least two degrees higher. The icy January continues this winter's trend: December was also the coldest since 1997.

The south of the country has largely been experiencing the coldest weather and this has brought down the average for the country overall. On 6 January, a weather station near the town of Weert, close to the Belgian border in the southeast, recorded a temperature of minus 20.8 degrees Celsius.
