REVIEW: PAUL POTTS' "ONE CHANCE"

One Chance - Paul Potts (released, July 16)

IN recent years, it would be fair to suggest that the kind of people for whom we have voted for on Saturday night talent shows have turned out to be no more than a media-induced flash-in-the-pan. The list is endless: Shayne Ward, Michelle McManus, Steve Brookstein, Darius; all perfectly wedged into the "where are they now?" category.

This album, One Chance, by Paul Potts, feels somewhat different.

Rather than having the Simon Cowell stamp of one-hit approval, Potts, who recently won ITV's Britain's Got Talent, seems destined for better things.

Nessun Dorma, the song made famous by heavyweight tenor Pavarotti, is reintroduced to a new audience on One Chance, and Potts graces his debut album with a number of other classic cover versions.

Cautiousness is not Potts' style as he boldly pounds through classics like Music of the Night and My Way, creating an album which is as musically confident as it is emotionally humble.
