FEMALE INFANTICIDE AND FOETICIDE IN INDA

BBC:
A two-day-old baby girl in India has survived after being buried alive in a field by her maternal grandfather in the south of the country.

The baby, who had apparently never been fed, was discovered by a farmer near a village some 150km south of Hyderabad.

He said he only spotted her because her tiny hand was sticking out of the soil.

Police say they have arrested the baby's grandfather, 52-year-old Abdul Rahman, after he confessed to trying to kill the newborn by burying her alive.

... It was not immediately clear whether Mr Rahman's daughter, the mother of the baby, had given her consent for her child to be taken away.

The baby, who has not yet been named and weighs just 1.7kg, is being treated in a nearby hospital.

The practice of female foeticide and female infanticide does occur in some rural areas.

A girl child is often viewed as inferior to a boy and a bride's dowry can also cripple a family financially.

Government figures suggest that around 10 million girls have been killed by their parents - either in the womb or immediately after birth - over the past two decades.
THAT'S 500,000 A YEAR.
THAT'S 500,000 A YEAR.
THAT'S 500,000 A YEAR.

WHERE'S THE OUTRAGE? We need to END all misogynist social practices EVERYWHERE: this crap and the stuff the Muslims do: honor-killings, forced-marriages, polygamy and endogamy.

AT THE FREAKIN' BARE MINIMUM, nations which permit this any of this misogynist crap should be banned from all multinational/multicultural arrangements like the UN, the World Bank, the WTO, the IMF, the ICC, etc.

If slavery is wrong everywhere and anywhere so is this crap. If the West was right to intervene ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE to end slavery, (as the West did), then the West would be right to intervene to end these horrifying practices.

  1. Social Security would put an end to this by ending the premium put on boys.

However, Social Security seems to depress birth rates.

Second best is to work for women's equality. However, that will take longer.

Women's equality also seems to depress birth rates. And marriage rates.

Traditional ways of doing things are probably grounded in biology. The fact that you see this in China and India means that it is likely not cultural.

I do believe these practices should be changed. Abortion is bad enough. Burying newborns is simply abhorent. However, there will be a price. TANSTAAFL.

As I said to some one else in another place on a very distantly related subject (space colonies) - civilization is a high maintenance activity. Reversion to a state of nature may be morally wrong but it is more economical in terms of human effort. Hunter gatherers worked only part time.

BTW in the animal kingdom monogamy (which is not absolute even among the monogamous) is not very common among the vertebrates.
