KYOTO, CHINA, COAL, OIL AND TECHNOLOGY

CHINA IS ONE OF THE WORLD BIGGEST AIR POLLUTUERS - FROM BURNING COAL; (NYTimes):
Already, China uses more coal than the United States, the European Union and Japan combined. And it has increased coal consumption 14 percent in each of the past two years in the broadest industrialization ever. Every week to 10 days, another coal-fired power plant opens somewhere in China that is big enough to serve all the households in Dallas or San Diego.
KYOTO WOULD HAVE EXEMPTED CHINA, AND THEREFORE DONE ABSO-FRIGGIN-LUTELY NOTHING/NADA/BUPKUS/ZILCH ON THIS SCORE.

BUT TECHNOLOGY - AND THE MARKETPLACE MIGHT SOLVE IT. PRONTO. AND BIGTIME: Existing coal-to-liquid technology can turn China's coal into cleaner burning oil/gasoline, and make them billions of dollars too. China has 190 billion tons of coal:

TECHNOLOGY AND THE MARKETPLACE HAVE REDUCED HUMAN MISERY AND IMPROVED LIFE ON EARTH MORE THAN ANY GOVERNMENT EVER HAS. THEY ALWAYS WILL.

  1. Where Kyoto would have forced the US to lower domestic emmissions (expensive) the Bush Admin has gone after spending money in India and China to reduce their emmissions providing a much bigger bang for the buck.

So the US is probably responsible for a much larger reduction in Greenhouse gasses, just not inside the US.

  2. One of the big problems here is China's attitude toward intellectual property. GE has coal-to-gas conversion technology they will happily sell, but China, as usual, seems to be demanding all the technical data to be able to make the equipment themselves.
