BIRD FLU GETTING MUCH WORSE IN ASIA

MIDDAY (BOMBAY, INDIA): Bird flu kills three in Indonesia
Jakarta: Bird flu killed three victims in as many days in Indonesia and has ravaged poultry stocks in Tibet and India, as the virus picks up steam across Asia.

Indonesia's announcement yesterday of the death of a 32-year-old man raised its human toll to 101, accounting for nearly half the worldwide total.
  • ER UM... THAT'S TOTAL SO FAR...
  • BELIEVE IT OR NOT, A BIRD FLU PANDEMIC MIGHT JUST BECOME THE BIGGEST ISSUE OF THE ELECTION - AND OUR LIVES.
  • I'D RATHER HAVE MITT AS CAPTAIN OF MY SHIP THAN MCCAIN OR HILLARY OR OBAMA.

THE HILL:
Democrats say McCain nearly abandoned GOP

By Bob Cusack

Posted: 03/28/07 07:39 PM [ET]

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) was close to leaving the Republican Party in 2001, weeks before then-Sen. Jim Jeffords (Vt.) famously announced his decision to become an Independent, according to former Democratic lawmakers who say they were involved in the discussions.

In interviews with The Hill this month, former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) and ex-Rep. Tom Downey (D-N.Y.) said there were nearly two months of talks with the maverick lawmaker following an approach by John Weaver, McCain’s chief political strategist.

Democrats had contacted Jeffords and then-Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.) in the early months of 2001 about switching parties, but in McCain’s case, they said, it was McCain’s top strategist who came to them.
  • MCCAIN IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE.
  • MCCAIN IS NOT A LOYAL REPUBLICAN.
  • MCCAIN IS A GOOD HAWK, AND THAT'S ABOUT IT.
BOTTOM-LINE: MCCAIN DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE THE STANDARD-BEARER FOR THE GOP.

NOT ANYMORE THAN CHAFFEE - WHO IS NOW A DEM, AND JEFFORDS, WHO LEFT THE GOP AND CAUCUSED WITH THE DEMS.

(ASIDE: AND EVEN MCCAIN'S HAWKISHNESS IS FLAWED:
  • HE SAID WE'D LOSE TO SERBIA WITHOUT GROUND TROOPS - AND HE WAS WRONG; WE WON WITHOUT THEM;
  • HE SAID WE NEEDED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS MORE TROOPS IN IRAQ - BUT WE DEFEATED AL QAEDA WITH A SURGE OF 30,000 AND A TOTAL OF 160,000 - SO HE WAS WRONG AGAIN.)

YUP: LIBERALS LOVE MCCAIN

I had dinner with one of the most liberal people I know. He goes way back with the left-wing movement. He was a buddy of Paul Newman, McGovern, Eldridge Cleaver, Ramsey Clark, Jane Fonda, Prince Sihanouk, Eugene McCarthy, Bela Abzug, The Nation folks, the CCR, the ACLU, was in two commie cells in the 1950's - and marched against every war since Vietnam, including Iraq.

He thinks it would be great if McCain won the GOP nomination because he could happily vote for McCain. Likes him a lot.

Libs know he's one of them.

AMIR PERETZ BLAMES PREDECESSORS FOR WAR'S FAILURE

Because he was cited as being part of the problem in the Winograd report, Amir Peretz has now given a press conference in which he says that his predecessors in the defense ministry are responsible for the failure of the 2nd Lebanon war:
Peretz stated that his predecessors should have been held accountable for much of the failings revealed in the war, pointing the finger particularly at former Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and former Defense Minister and current Labor Chairman Ehud Barak.

"There are tough questions regarding the six years prior to the war. This needs to be investigated further. Mofaz remained silent and did not alert about the failings (during his term in office). I have paid a heavy political price for years of failed policy.

"These questions should be presented to those who stated that the IDF needs to be a small and clever army, and thus jumpstarted the dynamics that led us to this catastrophe; and to those who decided that Israel could withdraw from Lebanon without an agreement, while abandoning our Christian allies and creating a vacuum that drew Hizbullah in."
Well, I'm glad he's pointing out that his two predecessors also have blame to shoulder. Because even Mofaz and Barak cannot be allowed to escape blame for their own negligence.

IN ISRAEL, EVEN POLITICIANS HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Shortly before the Winograd report was published, Michael Oren in the Wall Street Journal has something to say in relation:
The war began on July 12, 2006, when Hezbollah gunmen ambushed an Israeli border patrol, killing eight and kidnapping two. Mr. Olmert's response, a large-scale campaign intended to crush Hezbollah and secure the soldiers' release, was supported by most Israelis until serious mismanagement of the war surfaced. While receiving inadequate or faulty equipment -- my rifle literally fell apart in my hands -- Israeli forces were denied permission to invade Southern Lebanon and neutralize the katyusha rockets that were pummeling Israeli cities. Instead, Israeli jets bombed the Lebanese routes through which Syria resupplied Hezbollah and destroyed the organization's Beirut headquarters.

These attacks obliterated much of Hezbollah's infrastructure and killed a fourth of its fighters, but they also laid waste to a large part of Lebanon, killing civilians and squandering Israel's initial international backing. Hundreds of rockets, meanwhile, continued to smash into northern Israel, displacing a half-million civilians. Only on Aug. 13, after a month of fighting and with a U.N. ceasefire already approved, did the government authorize a ground offensive into Lebanon. The operation achieved nothing, either militarily or diplomatically, and cost the lives of 33 Israeli troops.

In another country, perhaps, such blunders might result in the resignation of senior officers but not necessarily elected officials. In Israel, though, no one is above blame. Accountability for decision making is a tenet of the Zionist ethos on which the Jewish state is based and, unlike most nations, Israel has a citizens' army in which the great majority -- politicians included -- serve. Most uniquely, Israel confronts daily security dangers and long-term threats to its existence. Israelis can neither condone nor afford a prime minister who passes the buck to their army or shirks the onus of defense. The person who sends us into battle cannot escape responsibility for our fate.
And that person is mainly Ehud Olmert.

Voting

On November 4, American voters — nowhere near all of those eligble — will go to the polls and cast their ballots for the President of their choice. Many voters believe that they are educated voters who understand the issues and that they reach a measured decision. As is often the case, voters want change. The following video clip (about two minutes in length) shows various Presidential aspirants repeating the message of change, an oft-cited reason for casting one's ballot:

According to this "The Science of Presidential Complexity," an article from the January 28, 2008 edition of the Washington Post, however, most votes are cast without much consideration as to agreement with a potential leader's views and, instead, are based on voting for simplistic solutions, even though those proposed solutions are much the same as campaign promises unkept over and over again (emphases mine):

The question is not whether we agree with these views: Politicians stake out such positions precisely because they strike a chord with many voters. The question is why we like our bromides so simple -- especially when the same promises have been offered to us time and again in previous elections.

[...]

"Low complexity wins elections," said psychologist Lucian Gideon Conway III of the University of Montana at Missoula, who published his analysis of the presidential speeches in the journal Political Psychology. "People like simple answers, and someone saying, 'I don't have all the answers and here are five possibilities' is a hard sell compared to someone who says, 'I have a plan and it is going to work and my opponent is completely wrong.' "

The result is a paradox. Politicians offer simplistic solutions in order to win elections. But to govern, they must quickly ratchet up their complexity because they confront costs, consequences and compromises. But when up for reelection, it's time to dumb things down again.

[...]

So the next time you hear presidential candidates say simplistic things that people want to hear, remember that they are merely responding rationally to the incentives that voters give them. The disturbing question is not why politicians pander, but why pandering works -- and for that we need to look in the mirror.
According to the article, past leaders have campaigned on simplicity, but once in office, have gone on to offer solutions which were more complex:

Those who changed history -- a group that included leaders from George Washington to Fidel Castro -- invariably had simple ideas as they went about winning power but quickly increased the complexity of their thinking after they obtained power. Revolutionaries who offered complex ideas to begin with or those whose complexity did not quickly increase after wining power usually were failures.
Over and over again, voters, those who don't become cynics and disenfranchise themselves, desire that the promises made to win elections and how elected leaders govern be consistent and related — an assumed connection on the part of voters for as long as I can remember. But maybe hoping for that consistency is as elusive as chasing a rainbow. Perhaps once in power, leaders suffer a reality check and are forced to govern in a manner quite different from their original promises and ideas. Then again, that explanation as to why leaders once in office so often disappoint the citizeny, including those who once staunchly supported a given candidate during a campaign, may be a simplistic rationale, too.

In my view, citizens often do not get the government they voted for. Nevertheless, in the next election, the desire for change sends the diehard voters, hopeful once again or detemined to vote against a particular candidate, to the polls. This cycle, dating back to the earliest days of self-government is self-perpetuating. So far, however, mankind has not come up with a better idea than the imperfect system of electing leaders who almost inevitably disappoint the governed.

THE ABSURD "STIMULUS"

Just a few comments of many below:

Economic stimulus package clears House, faces Senate hurdle: "The House approved a $146 billion economic stimulus package Tuesday afternoon by a wide, bipartisan margin, but the package had an uncertain future in the Senate. The vote was 385-35, with one representative voting present. The bill needed two-thirds of the voting members to pass. The bill calls for one-time tax rebates to go primarily to individuals making less than $75,000 and to married couples making less than $150,000. It would also provide temporary tax breaks that would let businesses deduct more of their investments in plants and equipment more quickly, and it contains two measures aimed at helping homeowners get or refinance mortgages"

Mainstream Media Gleefully Celebrate Nonexistent "Recession": "In a poorly-concealed effort to facilitate electoral change, irresponsible mainstream media voices cannot contain themselves in prematurely celebrating a non-existent recession. In the first two weeks of 2008 alone, the broadcast media referenced an economic recession some 54 times, according to the Business and Media Institute. There's only one problem: we are not in a recession, and it's far from certain that we will be anytime soon. In the third quarter of 2007, the most recent quarter for which Commerce Department GDP estimates are available, the American economy expanded at a remarkable 4.9% clip. Even more remarkably, this estimate constituted an upward revision from the Department's initial 3.9% estimate. More remarkable still, this 4.9% GDP expansion was the fastest pace in some four years. Indeed, the American economy hasn't even seen a decline in GDP since the third quarter of 2001. In other words, it is absurd to assert that we are somehow in a recession, given the fact that America has enjoyed six years of uninterrupted GDP growth. Beyond straightforward GDP numbers, however, other benchmark measures also reveal a fundamentally strong economy, contrary to the hysterical media chorus."

An Unstimulating Idea: "It's like taking a bucket of water from the deep end of a pool and dumping it into the shallow end. Funny thing -- the water in the shallow end doesn't get any deeper." That's how George Mason University economist Russell Roberts describes the logic -- rather, illogic -- of the economic "stimulus" proposals that everyone and his uncle are proposing. If we needed further demonstration of the folly that is the American political-economic system, there it is. The leaders of the interventionist state and the candidates who aspire to command it will continue to produce this inanity until people see it for the balderdash it is and resoundingly reject it. The problem is that most people don't see it for what it is. When told economic activity is slowing down, they demand that their "leaders" and candidates assure them there is a Plan to keep them safe. The politicians are more than happy to oblige. Details don't matter much."

What the Economy Really Needs: "The American economy is staggering under the weight of taxes, regulations, rising interest rates and lack of funds to borrow for growth. American entrepreneurs, the people who spy out the opportunities before others do, need capitalists, who can provide the funding, whether saved or borrowed. But they cannot implement their job-creating new projects. They cannot put their new products and services on the market. We need to get government off the backs of business, off everyone's backs. We need to get government out of the monetary system, out of the economy. We need separation of the economy and state just as much as separation of church and state. Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged - on the last page - was right in suggesting this constitutional amendment: "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of production and trade."

A Leftist comment on the "stimulus": "Barbara Ehrenreich memorably called the talk about the stimulus "clitoral economics." And that was before we got screwed. The stimulus deal just announced is being praised more for its existence than its content. Much lamented partisan bickering was overcome; bipartisan cooperation that got it done. With Wall Street bankers in panic, better something than nothing. So the parties came together and split the difference and created an agreement (which still has to survive the minefield called the U.S. Senate)."

A silver lining? ""We're so used to Democrats pushing tax hikes as the answer to all of America's problems that we were taken aback to find the following words buried in Pelosi's release on the stimulus deal: `Economists estimate that each dollar of broad tax cuts leads to $1.26 in economic growth.' Gee, that sort of sounds familiar. It's almost, though not quite, like what the much-reviled supply-side economists have been saying for, oh, 30 years or so. Pelosi, and other Democrats now suddenly touting tax cuts, may be on to something. We might demur on the notion that all tax cuts must be `broad' to be effective. Evidence really lies more strongly with giving tax cuts to those who would start new businesses or expand old ones. But it's refreshing to hear a Democrat admit the obvious-that tax cuts work. It's no secret that high tax rates act as a deadweight on the economy by creating absolute losses from which no one gains. Martin Feldstein, head of the National Bureau of Economic Research, estimates that a $1 tax hike costs the economy 76 cents in output. That explains why the economy jumps each time there's a tax cut."

Anti-abortion slogan okayed on Arizona license plates

The 9th Circus gets it right for once. It must have been a strain for them:

"An Arizona agency wrongly denied an anti-abortion group permission to print their message "Choose Life" on license plates, a federal appeals court ruled on Monday.

The Arizona License Plate Commission allows nonprofit groups to highlight their cause on license plates, but the commission in 2002 and 2003 denied the Arizona Life Coalition permission for a specialty plate with the "Choose Life" slogan.

The Arizona Life Coalition alleged that the denial violated their First Amendment rights to free speech and a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed.

HOPE!!

Don't give up your ideals. Don't compromise. Don't turn to expediency. And don't for heaven's sake, having seen the inner workings of the watch, don't get cynical.

--Ronald Reagan, in 1976 when he barely lost the Republican nomination. He said this in a speech to his loyal, teary-eyed supporters.

So after my little pity party I'm picking myself up and several things have come to mind.

First of all, Reaganism and Conservatism is not dead. Lets not get over dramatic and go this far. It may not win this election cycle but it will rear its head again in 2012.

Second, it may be a long shot but I'm not giving up hope that Mitt Romney may be able to stop the McCain train. I and many other conservatives will be casting our vote for him on Super Tuesday and we can't be silenced. I'm also contacting the Romney campaign to have someone on my radio show next Monday to represent his campaign.

Third, for whatever reason Republicans picked pathetic Gerald Ford over Reagan in 1976 and Bob Dole in 1996. Both times they were huge mistakes that cost us the election. And believe me, John McCain is a Bob Dole/Gerald Ford ALL THE WAY!!! I have no confidence that if McCain gets the nomination that he will win the general as so many liberals are predicting. In fact, if Obama gets the Dem nomination there is NO WAY McCain wins.

No matter what we still have hope. Conservatism and Reaganism is around for another day. We may not have a victory this time around but I don't think this was cut out to be a Republican year anyway. But here's to hoping for a groundswell of support for Governor Mitt Romney next Tuesday.

Also, check out Ann's column on McCain which is priceless and right all at the same time. And Gateway Pundit has an excellent post on how even in Florida Conservatives did not vote for McCain. He also did a good job of highlighting last night's debate which I couldn't bring myself to watch. Seeing Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee and John McCain on the stage with only Mitt Romney on the side of sanity did not sound appealing to me.

MORE PROOF THAT THE LEFT HATES THE US MILITARY

These Berkeley lefties are the same folks who want us to retreat from Iraq.

They hate the military and the GOP and Israel. And love illegal immigrants.

They all should move to Russia.

OF TIMETABLES AND OLD PUKE-HEAD LIBERALS - (or: No centavos pro Senor McCain)

McCain and Romney went at it again over the timetable canard: McCain accused Romney of being for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq - WHICH IS A LIE.

Sure: Mitt mentioned timetables and milestones in passing during an interview (way back in April), BUT ONLY AS PRIVATE GUIDEPOSTS BETWEEN OUR PRESIDENT AND PM MALIKI. On a follow up question, Romney said he would veto any bill with a timetable. PERIOD.

SO: McCain is a liar. A piece of lying scum. A sack of old tired lying liberal crap.

AND ANOTHER THING: As a businessman I know this very well: to achieve goals - any goals - you must have timetables and mileposts. Otherwise there's NO ACCOUNTABILITY. There is simply no way to keep people on track unless they know they goal and the time-frame. PERIOD. What Mitt said was common sense.

Now, maybe old angry farts who fester in the cloakrooms of the greatest debating club in the world (the US SENATE!) don’t understand that, but that’s the way of the REAL world.

And the real world is a world Romney knows and has mastered far greater than that old angry liberal puke McCain has or ever will.

I will never vote for McCain.

I wouldn’t care if he was running against Eugene V. Debs or Lenin! I wouldn't care if he was running against Teddy or Kerry.

McCain can suck my elbow in Macy's window and he still wouldn't get my vote!

He doesn't even get my vote for favorite Congressman who's a former Vietnam POW - Sam Johnson does.

And a GOP led by McCain... it won't get one freakin' cent from me. Not one. Not a penny.

NOT A FREAKIN' CENTAVO EITHER!

MCCAIN IS AN EFFECTIVE SENATOR...

SO LET'S KEEP HIM THERE!

UN PUTS A PRICE-TAG ON DEALING WITH GLOBAL WARMING HYSTERIA: $20 TRILLION

YUP: TRILLION (AP):
Global warming could cost the world up to $20 trillion over two decades for cleaner energy sources and do the most harm to people who can least afford to adapt, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warns in a new report.

Ban's report provides an overview of U.N. climate efforts to help the 192-nation General Assembly prepare for a key two-day climate debate in mid-February. That debate is intended to shape overall U.N. policy on climate change, including how nations can adapt to a warmer world and ways of supporting the U.N.-led negotiations toward a new climate treaty by 2009, U.N. officials said Wednesday.

The treaty, replacing the Kyoto Protocol when it expires in 2012, could shape the course of climate change for decades to come. The Kyoto pact requires 37 industrial nations to reduce greenhouse gases by a relatively modest 5 percent on average.

Much of the focus has been on the United States, the only major industrial nation to reject the treaty, and on fast-developing nations such as China and India. Many are looking to next year, when a new U.S. president takes the White House. The leading contenders in both political parties favor doing more than the voluntary approaches and call for new technologies that President Bush espouses.

In his 52-page report, Ban says that global investments of $15 trillion to $20 trillion over the next 20 to 25 years may be required "to place the world on a markedly different and sustainable energy trajectory." Today, the global energy industry spends about $300 billion a year in new plants, transmission networks and other new investment, according to U.N. figures.
Now you can readily see why there are so many socialists, utopianists and crooked carbon-traders campaigning for all kinds of carbon schemes and carbon taxes - (including Johnny McCain!): they're ITCHING to get their carbon-free fingers on just a little bit dough!

And since AGW is BS every single solitary cent spent on curbing man-made CO2 is WASTED.

2007-8 is shaping up as not only the coldest of the short century, but one of the coldest winters in several decades.

Yet so convinced are the PC libs, the lefties, the assorted pseudo-do-gooders in the CW crowd, and the intimidated centrists that they don't even trust their own eyes. As in, "who ya gonna believe - Al Gore or your lying eyes!" It's the Emperor's Clothes all over again - and they will cost YOU AND ME $20 TRILLION.

If we MERELY nominate McCain, then it guarantees that we're going down that road.

And it will reduce ALL of our living standards and our incomes.

FOR NOTHING.

Sigh.

US Navy to test-fire electric hypercannon

REGISTER (UK): Record-breaking railgun crowdpleaser
The US Navy will astound the world tomorrow by test-firing a radical new weapon system at an unprecedented power level.

The new piece of war-tech on trial is that old sci-fi favourite, an electromagnetic railgun.
According to the Office of Naval Research, which is in charge of the project, the electric cannon will deliver over ten megajoules of energy in one shot.

The ONR say this is "a power level never before achieved" by a railgun, and already represents significantly more poke than a normal five-inch naval gun can put behind its shells.

Obliteration by velocity

The designers hope in future to get the technology up to 64 megajoule muzzle-energy levels, able to shoot hypervelocity projectiles at a blistering Mach 7 and strike targets two hundred miles away - still going at Mach 5 - with pinpoint precision.
NOW THAT'S A REAL OUCH!

THERE'S MORE - RTWT.

NHS MATERNITY SERVICES "AT BREAKING POINT"

CHIEF OF MIDWIVES UNION IN UK (GUARDIAN):
Our members tell us that the gaps in service are basic. There aren't enough midwives or beds, and they hate that they don't have time to give the care and reassurance they want to provide for expectant mothers. They are reinforcing the review's findings of a "failure to recruit enough midwives for one-to-one care during labour".

We feel that maternity services are now at breaking point.

Given the staffing shortfalls, we need real figures underpinned by the demographic changes facing this country - rising birth rates and the retirement of baby-boomer midwives - if the government is to honour its guarantees for maternity care.

Otherwise we will be failing mothers, babies and their families.

MORE HUMAN BIRD FLU CASES IN INDIA AND EGYPT

IT'S GETTING WORSE: Jump in Suspect H5N1 Patients in Murshidabad West Bengal
- There had been 305 persons with Fever/URI. 51 had exposure history. They are being followed up. They have no signs of lower respiratory tract infection.

- 81 persons with fever/URI have reported in the hospital, out of which 16 have contact history. They are being followed up. They have no signs of lower respiratory tract infection.

The above description of H5N1 suspect patients in Murshidabad has dramatic increases in the number of patients with symptoms and exposure history (see satellite map here and here). The Ministry of Health and Welfare report for January 29 when compared to January 28 has an increase in patients with exposure history of 9 to 51. Hospitalized patients with exposure history jumped from zero to sixteen. Although these patients have no signs of lower respiratory tract infections, many appear to be new patients, in part because they were not included in the report fro the previous day. Moreover, mild H5N1 cases in Egypt were reported last year and the patients did not develop lower respiratory tract symptoms, but H5N1 was isolated.

In addition, patients in Malda have chest pains and many have been transferred to Calcutta. Although there may be small variations in H5N1 from different regions, the H5N1 in India is related to the Uva Lake strain and H5N1 isolated from Pakistan, where human cases have been reported, which include the longest sustained H5N1 transmission chain reported to date.
IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME...

OBAMA'S ANTI-IRAQ WAR STANCE IS AS MEANINGLESS AS HIM OPPOSING THE VIETNAM WAR

Obama makes a BIG point of his stump speech that HE OPPOSED the Iraq War from the start.

This might be a Big Deal in the dem primaries but it means BUPKUS in the general.

ESPECIALLY if it's clear we've WON by then. Then, it'll be as meaningful as him taking a stand against the Vietnam War.

SOMEONE HAS TO PIN HIM DOWN ON HIS ADVISORS ZBIG AND MALLEY - AND THEIR AGREEMENT WITH MEARSHEIMER AND WALT RE: ISRAEL LOBBY - AND HOW IT'S CONNECTED OR NOT TO THE IRAQ WAR.

The leftist base Obama is appealing to believe in thew Israel Lobby and that we went to war for Israel - as Cindy Sheehan and many other anti-Iraq War activists have said; "it's the neocons" to them.

Obama must be forced to agree or disagree.

MCCAIN VERSUS THE MOST ABLE

It's a pun, sort of.

We mustn't let the often hysterically angry loose cannon, and very liberal McCain kill the most able man in the entire field - and the most conservative, Mitt.

WINOGRAD WEEK

Today, at either 6:00 PM local time, the Winograd committee will be presenting its final conclusions about the government's conduct during the second Lebanon war:
The committee is to present the full report to Olmert and Barak at 5 p.m. One hour later, panel chairman Eliahu Winograd will meet with journalists at the Jerusalem International Convention Center (Binyanei Ha'uma) and give a statement including the main points of the report and general comments on the work of the committee. Immediately afterward, committee member Ruth Gavison will present a summary of Winograd's address in English.

At the same time that the classified report is presented to Olmert and Barak, the committee will release a nonclassified version on www.vaadatwino.org.il.
I'm going to be watching when the press conference is held an hour after Olmert and Barak are handed their copy of the report, and see how this turns out.

Update: now that I've seen it, and here's a transcript in English, it is damning, and as judge Winograd says, the military and political leadership failed/are responsible. As told over here:
"Israel did not win the [Second Lebanon] war" and the army did not provide an effective response to Hizbullah's rocket fire on Israel, said Judge (ret.) Eliyahu Winograd, issuing his committee's final report on the war at Jerusalem's International Convention Center Wednesday, adding that the war was a "missed opportunity."
Correct. They did not finish the job, and the Hezbollah has been given a chance to rearm and become even nastier. That's how the war was botched.

See also this analysis about Winograd's dire warning.

Clinton the psychopath again

"That picture of the seething, red-faced former president of the United States shaking his finger at members of the press who dare to question his wife's slimy campaign tactics, is all too familiar to those who have worked closely with him in the past. Like Janus, the two-faced Roman god, there are always been two distinct personalities in Bill Clinton. That charming, smiling gentleman seen in public is too often eclipsed in private by his negative twin evidenced in the eruption of a furious, unexpected, and uncontrollable rage, often accompanied by loud cursing and occasionally, even physical violence. It's not a pretty picture. I've been at the other end of that anger too many times and I was always amazed at the suddenness and intensity of his fury".

Lucky me!

Within the last couple of days, I have been attacked by TWO Leftist bloggers! And note that they attacked ME, not any of the facts and arguments that I have put forward. What they have written is, in short, a confession of complete intellectual failure. They hate the truths that I have highlighted but they were so unable to refute those truths that all they could manage was an attempt to shoot the messenger. Their arguments were what logicians call ad hominem arguments -- arguments of no scholarly repute whatever. There are a few variations of ad hominem argumentation but a typical one would be of the following form:

Hitler liked dogs
Hitler was evil
Therefore liking dogs is wrong

You don't have to be a logician to see immediately that such an argument is invalid yet it is form of argument that is routinely resorted to by the Left and the Greens. Why do they do it? Simple. It is all they have left once the full facts of the matter are presented. Even an invalid argument seems to comfort them when they are faced with having to give up beliefs that their egos are heavily invested in.

And in politics character assassination can be very useful. A candidate for political office is only partly evaluated on the strength of his arguments. Most of the time he is evaluated as a person. And he NEEDS to be evaluated that way because the voter has to predict what the candidate might do in the future. The candidate's claims about past and present reality are a relatively secondary part of what the voter has to evaluate. So ad hominem attacks can serve the Leftist quite well in politics.

I am not a politician, however. I am sure I would be a very bad one, in fact. I am an academic. And what I try to do is to represent the facts as accurately as possible. And the fact that I have had 200+ articles published in the academic journals shows that I am rather good at that. And most of those articles were in fact in the field of political psychology. I may in fact have had more papers published on political psychology than anyone else, ever. I obviously know the field of political psychology very well and yet I can think of no-one else who has had as many papers published in that field. So I am by normal academic criteria a leading expert on the subject and my constant focus on the psychology of the Left is entirely within the realm of my academic expertise.

And those 200+ publications were in fact rather hard-won. The editors and referees who evaluated the papers concerned and accepted them for publication were rarely sympathetic to my conclusions. Academics in the social sciences are overwhelmingly Leftist and my conclusions almost always tended to undermine Leftist beliefs. So my writing had to be "waterproof" to be passed for publication. There had to be no obvious faults in it that would justify rejection. I had to write at a much higher academic standard than someone who presented conclusions congenial to the Left. But in academic writing, ad hominem considerations have no part so my careful presentation of the facts eventually won the day nine times out of 10.

So you might see why I don't take attacks on me personally very seriously. The accuracy and relevance of what I say depends on the facts, not on who I am. But I am so far from being ashamed of what I am that I have put an unusual amount of personal information about myself on the net. I have nothing to hide. I am in fact frank about myself to the point that many might consider unwise.

And it is therefore MOST amusing that one of my recent Leftist critics had obviously trawled at great length through my autobiographical data looking for "dirt" and was able to come up with? Can you guess? Can you guess what he found to criticize? He criticized my POETRY!! What a good laugh I had about that! I doubt that any of my readers here would have been aware that in my long-lost teens I did write a bit of poetry. I put the poetry concerned online with the note that "I don't think much of it now" so criticisms of it leave me supremely unmoved.

The critic concerned also dug out a photo of me in my long-lost youthful slimness and posted it on his blog. So I feel rather kindly towards him about that! Even in doing that, however, my critic managed to generate a laugh. Before posting the picture he cropped it so that it no longer showed me with an arm around my cute little red-headed girfriend of the time. Must not show that conservatives have girlfriends! So I had another good laugh about that! You can see the uncropped picture here.

My poetry-loving critic also linked to another, older, post about me with the recommendation that it was a terrific read. Guess what was the first thing that this high-powered critique of me said? It said that I was "of paedophilic appearance". How desperate can you get? And shortly after that he went on to coin a new word" "indiscrete". Does he mean "indiscreet" or "not discrete"? Who knows? Definitely a low-wattage intellect. He then goes on to talk about my "hilariously unpublishable articles"! Wow! So how come over 200 of them did get published in mainstream academic journals? He is however not short of mental "agility". He then goes on to QUOTE from some of my published academic journal articles! Once again, much to amuse there. I have previously commented on the poor soul's meanderings here

And then, of course, there is Neiwert -- whose attack on me is also of course an ad hominem argument. In a supreme feat of illogic, he endeavours to portray me as a racist in the apparent belief that doing so will enable him to avoid confronting what I have pointed out about the Leftist nature of Nazism and Fascism! But surely if I really were a racist I would be particularly knowledgeable about Nazism and Fascism and therefore could speak with some authority on the political nature of those movements! So rather than disqualifying me to comment by his aspersions, Neiwert would seem in fact to be qualifying me. So his critique could be seen as another example of his talent for shooting himself in the foot. You can read about another example of that talent here.

I commented briefly on his silly attack yesterday and I should perhaps repeat here that a document that both he and my other critic mentioned immediately above have used in an attempt to prove the "racist" charge against me has already been comprehensively answered by me long ago. So that old answer should be read to form a part of my answer here. But I also think that I should here add some important background considerations to all of the attacks on me:

Leftists have so poisoned discussion of race and racism by decades of hysterical shrieks about it that any mention of race or racism is now seen as highly suspect -- unless of course you are praising some minority or asserting how justly they are aggrieved.

And I DO quite happily make statements about race and racism that are of a kind that would have been regarded as perfectly normal thoughout all of human history -- but which have just in the last few decades become furiously excoriated. The only reasonable definition of racism that I can see is something along the lines of "harming a person solely because of his race" but to a modern-day Leftist, just discussing race is "racism". To a Leftist, our entire human ancestry consisted of "racists". I suppose that suits a Leftist's inflated view of his own wonderful wisdom and virtue but it is extremely presumptuous.

So Neiwert's quotations from my various published comments on race and racism were an easy hit. His quotations decisively PROVE that I am a racist -- according to current Leftist criteria. That I am not a racist in any real sense, you might gather from this recent post. And in the simple-minded theology of the Left, a racist would definitely have to be an antisemite so how to explain my unwavering support for Israel? Most of my blogs actually display an Israeli flag -- yet I am not Jewish.

What is going on is that I refuse to subscribe to an addled definition of racism that rules out most discussion of it a priori. If the facts show that the races differ on average in some respect, I will say so -- and I often do say so. And in that I now have a lot of the medical literature on my side. Differences between the races, most of them apparently of genetic origin, are now frequently reported in the medical literature. See here, for instance.

So Leftist obscurantism about race now puts them squarely within the camp of the old Leftist Lysenkoists who once denied genetic inheritance entirely -- insisting quite amazingly that characteristics acquired in one's lifetime would be passed on to one's offspring. The Leftist view of racism is now clearly as unscientific as anything Trofim Lysenko ever said.

And the topic within political psychology that I took most interest in during my academic career was in fact racism. So around 15 years ago, I went to the library at my local university and looked up their PsycLIT CD-ROM. The CD was published by the American Psychological Association and indexes what has been published in all the world's academic psychology journals. I entered the search terms "racism" and "ethnocentrism" and looked at the authorship of the stream of articles that came out. There was one author who had published far more than any other -- accounting for about a fifth of the articles listed. So, by normal academic conventions, that author would clearly be the world's leading authority on the psychology of racism. I am that author. So regardless of the abuse that Neiwert and his ilk hurl at my writings on race and racism, those writings are perfectly respectable intellectually. You can access the publications concerned via this link.

That does also of course make it rather amusing that my critics have a habit of referring to me as a "pseudo" academic. If I am a pseudo-academic, I would like to meet a real one! Leftists cannot even get their abuse right a lot of the time. If they have to lie to make themselves feel good, then lie they will.

And, speaking of lies, I note that Neiwert does not appear to have responded to my exposure of his lie about the antisemitic Father Coughlin being a "Rightist". I suppose Leftists HAVE to use lies. The facts are so inconvenient to them. And the one HUGELY inconvenient fact to them is that the two great tyrannies of the 20th century -- Fascism and Communism -- were both examples of what happens when Leftism escapes all restraints.

Nothing that I have said above should be construed as a claim that there is anybody anywhere in academe who agrees with all my views on race and racism. Given the generally Leftist leanings of psychologists, I would be most surprised if there were. All that my publication record shows is that the arguments I have put forward on race and racism have very often been accepted by experts in the field as arguments that are well-made and well-supported. They are a good contribution to a discussion that the Left in general are determied to prevent us from having. I have put up here a summary of where I do stand on the questions involved. I argue that my stance is in fact a middle way between extremes.

And I might add finally that I myself do not depend on ad hominem argumentation in my writings -- though I can rarely resist a tu quoque. For instance, I have an exceedingly dim view of Bill Clinton yet I felt obliged to defend one of his statements recently because I felt that he had been unreasonably criticized over it. See here. So, whether you agree with my defence of Clinton or not, you can see that I, at least, am able to separate the truth of a statement from the person who made it.

I rather enjoyed writing the above. I am tempted to go on and fisk my critics in more detail but I am under no illusions about my ability to clean out the Augean stables. The Augean stables were so full of shit that you could shovel all your life and not get rid of it all.

FLORIDA: THE GOP LOST - AGAIN

NRO/LOWRY:

Romney Won Conservatives... [Rich Lowry]

...37-27, according to CNN. Like his victory among Republicans—not a big enough margin.

The GOP Vote [Rich Lowry]

Romney won it 33-31 according to CNN exits. Even in Florida, independents were McCain's margin of victory. Kind of incredible.

  • WHEN CONSERVATIVES LOSE, THEN THE GOP LOSES.
  • WHEN THE GOP LOSES, THE USA LOSES.
  • WHEN THE USA LOSES, THEN THE FREE WORLD LOSES.
  • THIS IS A VERY SAD DAY.
BUT IT AIN'T OVER!

GO MITT GO!

IT AIN'T OVER TILL IT'S OVER: Mitt is still IT!

In this cycle, Mitt is conservatism's last chance.

I hope he stays in.

I'm gonna write him a big check.

I want him to kick McCain's LIBERAL ass all over the freakin' nation on Super-duper Tuesday.

I don't want a ballot on the Fall with TWO LIBS: McCain and any Dem.

If that happens I WILL NOT VOTE. I WILL STAY HOME.

You listening GOP!?

Florida is NOT a typical GOP state: it is WAY too liberal: Martinez and Crist are both open borders guys; HECK, they even believe in AGW! Their machine gave McCain the win. It's that simple. The same machine which made the backroom immigration deal - and then tried to ram it sown our throats.

It's time for RUSH LIMBAUGH to get off his fat ass and endorse Mitt. Mark Levin, too. And Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity and Michelle Malkin and Bill O'Reilly.

If they don't then they are PHONY CONSERVATIVES.
And LOU DOBBS should endorse Mitt too - or he is just am ANTI-SHAMNESTY phony.

BTW: I AM SERIOUS: I WILL NOT VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

I'd rather President Obama destroyed the world - without my help, then play a part in it's destruction by helping McCain destroy it.

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MCCAIN AND HILARY OR EDWARDS OR OBAMA. THEY ALL SUCK, BIGTIME. They're all BIG GOVERNMENT, anti-Big Pharma, HIGH INCOME TAX, AGW CARBON TAX Lefties.

I refuse to be a part of it.

THE REAL DO-GOODERS VERSUS PEOPLE WHO WANT YOU TO THINK THEY'RE DO-GOODERS (THE LEFT)

A person who wants you to think they're a do-gooder is a phony and a poseur and usually a know-it-all elitist nannystater. A narcissist. They're egomaniacal utopianists: they think the world would be perfect if it only operated according to their wishes.

They hate smoking so they want it outlawed so you can't smoke.

They think giving free meds to folks with AIDS in Africa is good, so they want the federal government to take your money and give it to them, too.

They think that man-made CO2 is causing the world to get deadly warm, so they want YOU to pay more for everything with carbon in it, and they want YOU to change your lifestyle - but they don't change a thing.

They're afraid of guns and therefore want the state to take them away from everybody - even though you want one to defend yourself from criminal who will always find a way to get a gun.

And so on.

Their impassioned desires to make the ENTIRE world look the way THEY want it is a utopian dream - FOR A NARCISSIST!

And they don't care if their utopia is just an unrealistic dream. Or, if it's been proven to be a nightmare in other nations, in other centuries. WHY!? Because: For the leftist, it's more about looking like their helping, than really helping.

Here are a few examples - of people who made or a making or are trying to make a REAL DIFFERENCE, and the narcissistic pretenders and utopianists who have accomplished NOTHING, or nothing good:

REAL DO-GOODER:

Reagan - he defeated the USSR,
and saved the spirit and economy of the USA,
and he saved the Free World

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Gorbachev - he tried to save the USSR

REAL DO-GOODER:

Petraeus - well, you know the rest

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Wes Clark - he panders to the Kossacks and actually ASPIRES to be a Veep while parroting the defeatist dem line

REAL DO-GOODER:

Justice Thomas: defender of the Constitution -
including the 1st and 2nd Amendments

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

McCain - who had trampled on the 1st Amendment and would limit the 2nd,
and tax the crap out of us to stop global climate change

REAL DO-GOODER:

Ayaan

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Medea Benjamin of Code Pink

REAL DO-GOODER:
OOPS NOT THAT HAYEK, THIS ONE!

Fred Hayek proved that socialism is INEVITABLY the road to serfdom

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Marx - whose followers murdered 100 million people in the last century,
and enslaved 1.5 BILLION

REAL DO-GOODER:

Dr. ML King Jr wanted people judged on their character, not on their color

PERSONS WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE DO-GOODERS:

Jackson and Sharpton - who want handouts based on skin-color

REAL DO-GOODER:

A Marine - protecting the Free World and making it bigger!

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Cindy Sheehan - traitor

REAL DO-GOODER:

Michael Yon - independent embed journalist/blogger, described the REAL war, AND ITS REAL HEROES

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Michael Moore - an anti-American propagandist
who even opposed to the AFGHAN War

(PS: Mikey... GM is still #1 in the world)

REAL DO-GOODER:

Bjorn Lonborg - thinks we should be building water-treatment facilities in the Third World - not handing out laptops

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Nick Negroponte - thinks Third Word children need laptops right-away!

REAL DO-GOODER:

Bjorn Lonborg - thinks we should be building water-treatment facilities in the Third World - not worrying about where sea-level NIGHT be a hundred years from now (when science and engineering will be better able to deal with it)

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Al Gore SCREAMS about how man-made CO2 threatens our very SURVIVAL while he jets around the world, lives in a huge home - and while MOST of the world has its worst WINTER in a century

REAL DO-GOODERS:

Patriots who speak the truth

PERSON WHO WANTS YOU TO THINK THEY'RE A DO-GOODER:

Bill Keller and the NYTIMES - traitors who repeatedly publish state secrets,
and as a result make us all less safe

AND SO ON!

When you hear someone say "the common good" but act in a way which is for THEIR OWN GOOD AND NOT YOURS, they're leftie narcissists - and you should ignore them. And vote AGAINST them.

Folks like them never made the world a better place. They only get in OUR WAY as we do the hard work to make it better. They actually make it worse!

[AND YES: THIS WHOLE POST IS IN THE STYLE OF THE GREAT DOUG ROSS - (though sadly with less panache, no photoshops, and less humor!]

IDF ON ALERT FOR TERROR CELLS THAT EXITED GAZA

When many Gazans broke the fence into Egypt, terrorist activists went with them, and now, the IDF has beefed up its security forces to be on the lookout for any who might try to use this opportunity to attack Israel by infiltrating its own borderlines.

BARACK OBAMA SUPPORTS PALESTINIAN STATE CUTTING ISRAEL IN HALF

Ah, I should've known that this Democratic candidate was an untrustworthy type. Obama supports dividing Israel:
Palestinian refugees do not have a "literal" right of return to Israel, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Monday. He did not clarify whethered that implied they had a moral, metaphorical, legal or other non-literal right to return to Israel.

More controversially, Obama said he supported the division of Israel into at least two parts by a Palestinian state.

The stunning comment came as Obama struggled to articulate his stance on key Mideast issues in dispute. "The right of return [to Israel] is something that is not an option in a literal sense," Obama said, but then went on to say that "The Palestinians have a legitimate concern that a state have a contiguous coherent mass that would allow the state to function effectively."

A land corridor between Gaza and the West Bank would effectively cut Israel in half, making it incoherent and non-contiguous, divided into northern and southern portions by the Palestinian land-mass Obama supports. The Democratic candidate didn't explain why it was legitimate for the Palestinians to have a coherent and contiguous territory at Israel's expense.
He doesn't have to. I'm convinced enough already that he is not a candidate to support for president.

The Attempt to Shut up Michael Savage Continues

I enjoyed this condemnation of Savage from a Muslim writer:

"Savage's record is out there for all to see. In 2004, Savage stated "I think (Muslims) need to be forcibly converted to Christianity ... It's the only thing that can probably turn them into human beings." In 2006, he called for a ban on Muslim immigration and recommended making "the construction of mosques illegal in America." Also that year, he advocated "kill(ing) 100 million" Muslims.

Source

Muslim preachers say that sort of thing about the rest of us all the time but what is OK for them is not OK for Savage, apparently. Try to build a Christian church in Saudi Arabia and see how far you get! Tolerance and free speech go only one way as far as the Muslims and the Left are concerned.

Bush holds the line

He has always insisted that all the USA should do is invest in research

THE US will commit $US2 billion over the next three years for a new international fund to promote clean energy technologies and fight climate change, President George W. Bush will tell Congress today in his annual State of the Union speech. "Along with contributions from other countries, this fund will increase and accelerate the deployment of all forms of cleaner, more efficient technologies in developing nations like India and China, and help leverage substantial private-sector capital by making clean energy projects more financially attractive," the White House said in a fact sheet on Mr Bush's speech.

Mr Bush plans to reaffirm the United States' commitment to work with major economies and through the United Nations to complete an international agreement that will slow, stop, and eventually reverse the growth of greenhouse gases. "This agreement will be effective only if it includes commitments by every major economy and gives none a free ride," the White House said.

BRUTAL WINTER STORMS FROM CHINA TO THE WESTERN USA: AGWMA!

NYTIMES/AP: Storms Hammer West With Heavy Snow
Heavy snow pummeled Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington, leaving thousands without power, causing widespread havoc on roads and even overwhelming one ski resort.

The snowfall led to the collapse Monday of several roofs at businesses in northern Idaho, while avalanches forced the evacuations of dozens of homes. There were no injuries.

About 20 inches of snow fell around Coeur d'Alene. ''They got clobbered,'' John Livingston, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said of residents in that northern city.

The storm system arrived from California and combined with another emerging from the Gulf of Alaska, stalling over eastern Washington and northern Idaho, said Livingston.

Forecasters predicted a new storm could roll in on Tuesday, bringing another 1 to 3 inches of snow in low-lying areas of Idaho and 2 to 4 inches in the mountains.
AGWMA.

AGW IS THE BIGGEST LEFT-WING HOAX SINCE MARX CAME UP WITH COMMUNISM!

Pro-Taliban Khan Met With Key Senate Democrats

PIPELINE:
Imran Khan the leader of Pakistan’s Islamist Tehrik-e-Insaaf party [PTI], has been welcomed this week with open arms by the U.S. Senate's Democrat leadership, with whom he has held extensive meetings. ...

Khan, a former professional cricket player, was jailed by president Musharaff in the tumult leading up to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

He as brought his campaign of undercutting the Pakistani leader to America where he is apparently receiving prominent Democrat support.

Imran Khan's instigation of the riots caused by the Quran flushing rumor seems to have earned him "street cred" with the Taliban supporting Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal [MMA] party, with whose leader, Qazi Hussain, Khan has partnered in hopes of further destabilizing the Musharaff administration.
  • ON THE LEFT, IT IS CHIC TO SAY MUSHARRAF IS A BAD MAN WHO DOESN'T DESERVES USA SUPPORT.
  • THIS IS BS - AS ANTI-AMERICAN AS WHEN THE SAME LEFTIES CRITIQUED THE SHAH.
  • MUSHARRAF IS A GOOD ALLY.
  • AS WE FIRST RELAYED, HE MET SECRETLY WITH BARAK IN PARIS.
  • WOLD MALIKI DO THIS? WOULD KARZAI? NOPE.
  • MUSHARRAF IS A BETTER ALLY THAN TURKEY OR SAUDI ARABIA, DOING MORE WITH REAL TROOPS -- KILLING MORE OF THE ENEMY THAN EVEN NATO.
SO WHY ARE THE DEMOCRATS PLAYING FOOTSIE WITH HIS ENEMY?

THE DEMOCRAT PARTY IS CONTROLLED BY THE LEFT - AND THEY WANT US TO LOSE.

BLOOMBERG: Bird Flu Kills Boy in Indonesia, Infects Two, Ministry Says
Bird flu killed a nine-year-old boy in Indonesia and the H5N1 strain of virus had infected another two people [SOME REPORTS SAY 4], the Health Ministry said in a statement today.

The boy from Depok, south of Jakarta, died yesterday at Sulianti Saroso Hospital after failing to respond to four days of treatment, the ministry said. His death marked the Southeast Asian nation's 99th fatality from the avian influenza virus, more than any other country.

``The team is heading to the neighborhood to find out how he may have contracted the disease,'' Joko Suyono, an official at the ministry's avian flu center, said by phone today.
THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE:
  • MORE WILD BIRDS;
  • MORE POULTRY;
  • MORE PARTS OF THE WORLD;
  • MORE HUMANS GETTING SICK WITH NO KNOWN CONTACT WITH SICK BIRD - 25% ACCORDING TO WHO.

JIM DEMINT: THE CONSERVATIVE RESPONSE TO DUBYA'S LAST SOTU

BY ONE OF MY FAVORITE SENATORS - JIM DEMINT.

"ROMNEY-DEMINT!"

VIDEO OF OBAMA DISSING TEDDY KENNEDY

VIA ABC VIA RUFFINI:

OBAMA/TED VERSUS HILLARY IS THE OLDTIME DEM MACHINE VERSUS THE CLINTON MACHINE. (SEE BELOW)

"CHECK THIS BOX IF YOU WISH TO PAY AT THE HIGHER, DEMOCRAT TAX RATE"

Democrats want rich people to pay higher income tax rates than they do now.

Some rich libs agree - Warren Buffet for instance. And Teddy Jo Kennedy.

And so these rich socialistic libs are campaigning for higher taxes: they want the tax rates on the wealthiest American to return to Clintonian/pre-Dubya levels.

Here's an idea: why not put a new check-box at the bottom of the tax form which would read like this: "Check here if you wish to pay at the higher Clinton tax rate."

Or as Bush said tonight: "Others have said they would personally be happy to pay higher taxes. I welcome their enthusiasm, and I am pleased to report that the IRS accepts both checks and money orders."

NOTHING stops Buffet from writing Uncle Sam a bigger check.

The fact that he hasn't chosen to pay at the old rates proves that he and his comrades are full of s*it.
